What is your daily commute like?
« on: Wed, 26 October 2016, 18:35:25 »
GHers, what is your daily commute like? How long is it? Is it by foot, subway, bike, taxi, train, plane, or automobile? Traffic an issue? Kids to drop off? Carpool, anyone? Is there a regular at the coffee shop or an eccentric character you encounter along the way?

Maybe you work or go to school from home and don't have to leave the house on a regular basis.

I am still living at home and its about a 45 minute drive to get to my classes. That is during times with little to no traffic. Fortunately my part-time job is only 5 minutes away.  There has got to be more to life than just wasting hours on end in gridlock.

I live 25mi away from my work and the trip is becoming one of the most congested corridors in Northern California. I only drive when I must. I have the option to take Bart, and then a shuttle and that works very well. But the best time is has when I take my bike:

35 miles, 45 to 80 minutes, depending on how many people decide to crash into each other and stare and crashed cars

4km, takes me about 15mins in total to get from my apartment to my office via bus.

in the past i've had 2.5 hour commutes each way to uni so this was a welcome change

2.4 miles, 7 minute drive.  Not bad at alllllll.

The new job starting next week will be a bit more, 19.3 miles, 24 minutes.

My current drive is 30 miles, about 45 minutes depending on the school bus and stop light situation.  I live in a rural area of Minnesota and a lot of the drive hilly with farm fields and lakes, pretty nice.  Then I hit suburban stoplight sprawl and it slows down.

Having had longer and shorter commutes, it's amazing when you shave 15 minutes or 30 minutes off your drive time one-way and you realize how much of your day you get back.  I wish I was in walking distance of my work.

Work at home for now but previously my commute to college would be a 20 minute walk, or to a job I used to have was 10 minute walk then 10 minutes on the bus.

I almost envy those with a decent bus situation. Over the summer, my car was getting new tires and ball joints so I had to take the bus to a night class. It took over two hours to go ~15miles including a 3 mile bike ride. On the way back I had to transfer buses and was stuck hiding behind a tree an extra 20 minutes in bad part of town where was a bunch of literal crack+methhead looking people yelling at each other under the only working streetlight.

An hour and 20 minutes on the bus each way.

15 minutes in a car.

In an average year I spend 5.75 days straight standing at a bus stop waiting.

Hours and days of misery walking 100% uphill each way, most of the time in rain, standing waiting wet and filling with hatred. Every morning. Every evening.

I hate long daily travel time, when i was at school i had to travel 30 min on bus and then 20 on train. When waiting time was factored in about an hour and half. That was the worst ive had to do. Current situation 8 minute drive and i will not put myself in a situation that makes it longer. Too much life is wasted in daily travel and i dont want to put myself in that situation.

between 25-60 minutes depending on what shift I'm on. Working 12 hour shifts and living in the centre of a fairly big city with my work outside the city, my normal day shift means I miss most of the traffic. Working night shift means I go home in the morning when everyone else is going to work (in to the city centre) and go to work when everyone else is leaving (out of city centre).

An hour drive home after a 12 hour night shift sucks sometimes. I'm also slowly destroying the gearbox in my old car because it's all 30mph with lots of traffic lights so lots of gear changes...

30 minute drive out of the city in my car. Most relaxing thing ever. All the traffic is going into the city while I'm going out. Never one complaint about rush hour in the morning or evening :p

Going in to work, it's roughly a 15-25 minute drive, usually closer to 15.

Coming home from work, it's anywhere from 15 minutes (I think this only happened once) to an hour (usually closer to this).

I ****ing hate my commute.

That's part of the reason why I want to live in the city for a while, especially since I work in the suburbs.

My work is two towns away, so it's just a quick hop on the highway, takes a little under 20 minutes to get there. On the way back, I just take the local route, which is half an hour and very scenic.

Going back from work in the summer is awful, though, since the highway and local road/route are the only 2 ways to get to the Cape, which everyone seems to want to get to. I swear Cape traffic starts on Wednesdays now.

My work desk is literally one step from my bed. I won this thread!
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

20 minute walk to the railway station.  30 minute train ride.  10 minute walk to the office.

Slightly longer to get home because the train goes through the MURL (Melbourne Underground Rail Loop, more commonly known as the City Loop these days) - adds 12 minutes to the homeward journey.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

10 mile drive. Generally 45min to 1 hour when commuting during rush hour. Heavy traffic to say the least. I can take light rail/subway/bus, but those usually end up taking a little longer and being a bit more uncomfortable. I rather enjoy drinking my coffee and listening to the radio in my little bubble in the morning.

I ride my bike about 3 miles.  Sometimes I walk, sometimes I take the bus, sometimes I take electric car sharing service.  I don't own a car right now, which is proving to be at a challenge at times, and I might cave soon.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

I have to bike about 7km to work. It's about to double though as I am moving soon.
Biking is fun.

My work desk is literally one step from my bed. I won this thread!

The dream :( Although I think I would get too distracted if I worked at home.

Soon it will be dark coming to work and going back home.

Goodbye sun. ;(

I'm in the same boat dude... No sun ever when on days. Vitamin D supplements are in order I think.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I have a 13.5-15 minute walk to work depending if the traffic lights are against me or not, listening to good music to drown out the traffic.  I can think of few things worse than a commute of a length which varies greatly based on factors out of my control, or wasting more than 1/24th of my working week travelling even if it was smooth and consistent.  Guess that's why I'm still in a crappy job...

57 miles each way. 75-90 minute drive in the morning, 90-120 minute drive on the way home :(

Commuter options really suck here.

Friday's I work from home.
