I just stumbled upon this, and had to have it. For everyone who likes gadgets and pocket knifes I recommend to do so as well. Its not a fortune (and therefore also cool or people living outside of the US), and it appears to be a exclusive. You cant go wrong with a Victorinox, and this one just looks so cool. Its something that will make me happy just looking at it. For any Knife guy this is a must, why wouldn't you?

is this made in china ?

I hope you are kidding.

Edit: Victorinox are the original and traditional manufacturers of "The swiss army knife". They are made in Switzerland.

Alot of companies do this now,  they have them make almost 100% of the components in China.. then ship, do assembly in home country.. Print made in Home country.

For example, Maidenform, most of their stuff says made in usa,  but what they actually do is, they order the stuff from China,  then when it arrives, they sew the last threads on here in the us..

This is just how the world works now..

It doesn't go for things that are High tech,  but for low tech blunt instruments such as this.. It's almost a certainty.

I have visited the Victorinox factory and have seen how they make and hand assemble these knifes, these are made in Switzerland. They keep cost down by keeping the production high. These are all very high quality tools.

Did you see them smelt the blanks then drop forge the blades?

Did you see the entire factory line,   or just parts of it..

Remember what was it, economics class,  there was this story about salad oil..

Where the plant manager filled the bottom of the vat with water, and the salad oil floated on top..

Then upon inspection,  the inspected half the stock in the morning,  took the inspector out for lunch....  Then as they were eating lunch,  workers moved the salad oil from the partially filled water tanks they inspected in the morning to the empty tanks they were going to inspect in the after noon..

Then when they came back for the afternoon inspection,  there was yet more salad oil, while all the day time tanks were empty..

My point is,  What YOU SAW is not gospel, and may VERY WELL be a front for the fact that they're importing most of their stuff...

And China is very discreet about paperwork and statistics....  basically no one cares....

I was in China, last last year,  and this is how far they go, I won't name names..

China makes the product to 99% completion..

The companies overseas will register a new address or address delivery to a intermediary warehouse, with a completely different final delivery name and location from the parent company plant/ warehouse..

Then the intermediary will take it the last leg of the way,  again with nondescript paperwork..

The reason this is justifiable standard, is because for the Majority of the products being produced, especially blunt metals/plastics   there is no difference in quality between the Cheaper alternative and the home made..

The only people hurt by this process is native blue collar workers..

I'm not an enthusiast of pocket knife, but the Swiss army knives are quite unique in its size and functions and practicality.
I especially like the saw and the discontinued Marlin spike, and therefore Victorinox's first mate and Victorinox's midshipman are on my search list.

You can see how the blades are made.
Perhaps one can still argue the source of steel, etc.
Some member claimed that GMK sources ABS plastics from China, for example.

In terms of steel quality, those from China are still crap, as some may say.
China steel is definitely avoided in high-end steel products for whatever reasons that I don't know. People say iron ores from Sweden and Japan are still amount the most sought after because of the proportion of their natural components. And professional steel products will let you know the percentage of carbon presents in the steel and the specific process it was made.

It's ok to believe them..

But, I'm just trying to indicate some caution as the reality of modern mass production has changed..

They'd have to pay the equivalent of $40,000 usd to someone to do all those blade inspections..

That same $40,000 usd can pay for 6 to 8 inspectors in China..

Now, if you were making a high tech product, maybe the cost difference is worth it, and insignificant relative to the msrp of the product.

But this is just some metal plates continuously made more affordable....

While it's true that in Certain high tech material science arenas, China is still behind..

How are you so sure they're using such high-grade steel for these knives..

This is not aerospace..  This is a regular consumer product under the guise of luxury..

They don't, its probably something close to 440c
They don't tell you what Steel they are using on their blades, it just said Stainless, but I'm sure they have it on their website somewhere or somebody tested it. There is nothing wrong with 440c, its just not necessarily "High end" like for example N690 or CPM S90V, but you will also pay to find these on your blade.

For high quality steel products, I am already not talking about Victorinox's army knives.
I do believe Victorinox sourced out some of their products to foreign countries, e.g. their army knife sharpeners.
