Any recommendation for a good, inexpensive SD card reader?

My SD card reader is a multi-card reader that can take cards of different slots. It gets dropped from my computer all the time. I can be reading or copying to a card, and suddenly I get this “no device found” message. So my copying or reading is interrupted and I have to pull out the reader and put it back again.

I have already eliminated the following as possible sources of the interruption:
-lousy card. Same prob for SD cards of different sizes
-computer. Same prob on different computer
-USB slot. Same prob on different slots

 I have to buy a different SD card reader. But there are so many in the market at different prices. I bought two cheap readers. One broke almost immediately, and the other is just as unreliable. Maybe someone can advise?

I recommeded to you , read my sd card thread.. so clearly, there's something there which would answer your question..   step two, click,    step three , control f, step four, type reader, step five, press enter..

What did you mean about turning around and dropping the mic?

I have had several of these, and it seems somewhat random when they work and fail. My current one is a no-name multi-reader mounted in the 3.5" external drive bay and it has served well for several years.

I chalk it up to the thin metal pins and housings getting bent and misaligned. That it true of all the pieces on both ends, by the way. Cables and plugs are failures waiting to happen. I like the magnetic connections on Apple MacBook power cables and I have high hopes for USB-C when it eventually becomes widely accepted.

I have a multi card reader that's the size and shape of a USB drive, and it's worked solidly for me for the last 5 or 6 years or so. Its not a brand, but I would probably recommend one of those that has less of a chance to break over one with a cable. Just another point of failure IMO

I think it's actually important that the reader have a heatsink..  I got one of those smaller usb readers, it's also one of the higher speed rated ones.. lexar lv7xxxx something..

it gets really hot, and the chip is hot to the touch..


I can totally see now why sd cards burn out during continuous writes for people,  it's not the card dying, it's the reader killing it..


The more powerful chip controllers they use nowadays might have something to do with it as well..


The cheapo sdcards run only 0.x MB/s random IO, vs 3 to 5MB/s on the more expensive cards...   So the difference in processor ondie must be HUGE..
