Anyone think this is the turning point ?

Because developers are generally limited to 1080p  --assets-- as in texture and geometry..

So anyone can run their games @ 4k / 8k / 14k,   but it won't look much better because the scene complexity and details are limited by developmental budget..


Only AAAs have budget to create meaningful visual assets that necessitate portrayal beyond 1080p..  WHICH are very few relative to the landscape..



SO........ given that the new xbox is confirmed to be +20% greater than RX480 (ati) level performance. also faster than a gtx 1060 (nvidia).. 

 That means this new machine should saturate the fidelity that's possible to create, by most developers @ the 1080p level..






We're still waiting on keyboard and mouse..   but all the bones are finally there..

rx480 street price in the usa is < $200,   so given microsoft's buying power,  they're getting it for less than $50 a piece.. probably

Even better. It's hard to justify ever buying a Scorpio if it's $500+ unless the pros that come from console (portability, exclusives or the need to play with a controller) are super important to you. Especially if you already have a PC capable of running the RX480 or GTX 1060. Even if you don't have the PC, the extra money you would need to spend to get one would be worth it considering how often these 'new generation' consoles are coming out now (PS4 --> PS4 Pro etc.)

I was using the PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles as an example of how often they come out with new consoles. Basically 3 years apart at $400 each. Plus a $60/year online membership so add $180. That's $980 plus ~$10 more for each game you buy brand new for console on release.

As for mouse/keyboard, I would hope that's not the direction console goes in. I'm one of those people who regardless of how much more accurate PC peripherals are for shooter games, I prefer to use a controller and I want the same advantage/disadvantage as all other players. I play Battlefield 1 on PS4 even tho I have a more than capable PC to play that game at higher quality for that very reason. If mouse/keyboard support was offered on console, I would likely abandon all shooter games forever and I know I'm not the only one.

The only turning point here is having PC and consoles now being one analogous development platform so devs can create whatever and not really worry about allocating huge amounts of resources for each port. Great for productivity and workflow - terrible for technical creativity. This is a cerebral smoothing of the development cycle to ensure no one does anything special or thinks outside of the box on a technical level.

mm..  well it 's always a balance of  creativity and get'r'done..    no project is ONLY one and not the other..   

These are the final days of game consoles we live in. I reckon by next gen everything will be modular/upgradable, all digital, and have fewer and fewer exclusive IPs until eventually all we will be doing is choosing which brand of multimedia machine we want to buy since they all do the same things.

It makes me sad, but progress in inevitable as technology is deeper ingrained into our daily lives.

I totally agree with what you're saying even as someone who is PC-biased and am horrible at using the controller. There is also a larger player base on PS4 (online) for shooting & fighting games (like SFV). Except for CS of course.

The controllers are a big money maker which offsets costs for them,  which is why they've clung to it for so long.


but as far as game modes, you don't want to mix because of PC- hax..

I don't think that's why they have clung to them so long. Controllers are the essence of console and what makes them living room/multiplayer friendly. Sure, there are lapboards that allow for keyboard/mouse PC gaming in the living room, they work really well and I own and use one. But, they are big, awkward to store (leaning against a wall or under a couch), 15 feet of cord to worry about and very expensive vs controllers. Who wants this mess in their living room all the time? I'm all about PC gaming but I would be really sad not only for myself but the millions of other people who have grown to love controllers over the past 30 years or so. Controllers just feel more natural for gaming. I would be pleased as punch if full controller support was offered for all PC games. But some are just not designed with controllers in mind and would not work. Diablo 3 being the exception. Controllers work surprisingly well for Diablo 3 on console.

But, they are big, awkward to store (leaning against a wall or under a couch), 15 feet of cord to worry about and very expensive vs controllers. Who wants this mess in their living room all the time? I'm all about PC gaming but I would be really sad not only for myself but the millions of other people who have grown to love controllers over the past 30 years or so. Controllers just feel more natural for gaming. I would be pleased as punch if full controller support was offered for all PC games. But some are just not designed with controllers in mind and would not work. Diablo 3 being the exception. Controllers work surprisingly well for Diablo 3 on console.

Given time  the living room will be completely abandoned..   everyone will just be infront of their 4k monitors behind a desks..
