Funny reactions to having your keyboard in public thread
« on: Sat, 17 June 2017, 20:13:45 »
What are some things people say to you when they see you with an unusual looking keyboard?

Some of the best I've gotten are:

Quote
Are you about to hack the school?
(Highschool a few years ago, the kid was dead serious)

Quote
Oh my god! Your keyboard is so clean!
(obviously has only ever seen her home keyboard which must have been disgusting)

Quote
Your keyboard looks like it's from the 1980's!
(oddly enough referring to my hhkb)

what are some of you yours?

That cost you what?!?

And then they try typing on it and understand...
When you are dead, you don't know that you are dead. It is difficult only for the others.
It is the same when you are stupid.

I still haven't gotten any funny reactions with my MF68 with blanks. I only get weird looks here and there. Probably wondering where the heck did the legend go or how I'm typing without them. I think not a lot of people where I'm from know how to touch type.

I did get two people ask about my keyboard though. Like where I bought it and if they can touch it haha.

Also, are you the same dude who posted their HHKb with the blue spacebar on reddit?

It's  SO  BIG !
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

"This noise is going to become a problem if it doesn't stop now."

Ironically, from my obnoxiously loud coworker when I had a board with Cherry MX Reds at work.  The same coworker who finger drums on his desk nonstop and types so hard that his rubber dome was just as loud as the Cherry MX Reds.   :p

I do a lot of keyboard filming for my YouTube channel in parks and other public places. So far no one has said anything other than "nice keyboard" or its variations. But I do get lots of quizzical and confused looks lol.

Thanks for your continued support! If you ever have any keyboards you'd like to see reviewed, or have a cool project, let me know! I should have my wife carry a second camera and just film me doing my shots just to catch the weird glances my direction.

"is that a Lego keyboard?"
-referring to my marble hydrodip Novatouch with granite dsa.

Other one was my first daskeyboard at work: guy comes over and wants to do something at my PC. He gets ready, looks at the keyboard, then stands aside and says "can you type this for me"...

:))

I can touch type but it would still be uncomfortable for me to look down there and not see any legends.
I guess I am just not that into blanks, although I can definitely see how it suits a board like the HHKB.

Why would you spend $300 on a stupid keyboard like that? You could have bought a Razer for that price!

Yup, quite typical of my peers.

did you really need another keyboard?

and

If you stopped buying keyboards you could upgrade your computer.

Eh, the new Greetech ones aren't too bad, and the ones with Cherry switches are pretty good, but the Kalihs were absolute trash.

60% is more then enough for me. I barely use arrows and the function keys unless I'm in the BIOS; layers fix that problem anyway. Never use the numpad either.

Can you do a review on the Dell L100 USB keyboard?  I don't want to drop a ton of money on this top of the line peripheral without adequate research/reviews/conjecture/advice.

L100 is imho a super good keyboard when brand new..

The space bar and bottom row is super comfy..

But it doesn't age well, like so many silicone dome boards.

Mostly it is about the noise. People will often close the door to my office  :p I suppose this isn't really in public, since it's my work place. But I don't use keyboards outside of work or home so no one else sees them.

The only other reactions I get are from the flashy RGB boards, and it's the typical reaction of someone watching a dazzling light show.  So not the keyboard so much as the lights on it...

Just happened during the Seattle Rooftop Build Party this past Saturday

There were other people on the roof and were just staring at us as we pulled out keyboard after keyboard after keyboard. Someone eventually got up and asked.."so..do you ever connect these to anything? What are you guys doing with them here? Are you just typing on them? What's the point? etc etc etc".

The correct answer:

"The local cartel is running a contest to see who can cram the most narcotics in a keyboard.  Winner gets a spaghetti and meatball dinner at Big Tony's followed by hookers and blow."

"Whoa that's retro!"

"Teach me."

I don't take my quality keyboards out of my house. I have a beige Unicomp, an IBM Model M, a Fujitsu Peerless (yeah, I like it) and a Model F XT. I have enough personality without making keyboards an issue. I have some Dell rubberdomes (RT7D50 and 5xRT7D20s) that I will take to work. Yeah, I have five RT7D20s. There are worse things out there than these two (relatively nice non-mech keyboards).

I use a Topre Type Heaven at work.  People tend to ignore it and think that it’s just another Microsoft membrane that everybody else uses.

Just so we're clear, I was kidding.  Still, I thank you for the helpful info.  I actually like the Dell L30U keyboard the best.

He loves the L100. That's me in the comment section. I personally like hanging on that space bar over the edge of my table. I used it at work, took it home when we moved to unassigned seating, lost it to a beer. RIP. Picked up another one after this guy's video. I'm impressionable.

I'm a huge fan of the Dell KB-522.  It is hands down my favorite membrane keyboard.  I've been using it for over a year now and even though some of the legends are disappearing the feel of it is still fresh compared to keys that rarely get used if at all.  For the record I've tried the legendary Thailand made QuietKeys as well as a good sampling of Topre and Plum/NIZ and I still much prefer the KB-522 over those.

Going through airport security with my Kinesis Freestyle (split). TSA guy stares at it for like 30 seconds with his mouth open, then says, "You type on this?"

Thanks for the info. I took it as a recommendation. People on Amazon love them. I'm seeing if I can pick one up under 20 bucks on eBay.
