It was just OK, not a lot of laughs in last night's episode tbh

They are attempting to mature the characters and show a little, but I miss the goofy non-sequitur humor of season 1

Heh. They got Susan Sarandon, Peter Serafinovic and Danny Trejo to do the voice acting. Not bad.

I'm dissapointed with season 3 so far.
Remings me of Futurama s1 vs. s2.
In the first one they really tried some unconventional stories,
whereas in the secone one they just put normal stories in a scifi setting.

ok pickle rick was good  :))

I'm enjoying it thus far, not sure if I like it better than S2 since that was the season I first saw. It's much more violent this time around, which doesn't bother me, just it's a noticeable difference. I'm really stoked for the overall plot reveals this season, hoping that Evil Morty comes back into the fold or at least part of his origins.
Anyone watch pay attention to the theorizing about the show?

I think a lot of people have X or Y in their head as to what makes a good season 3, what they want out of it.. the specific balance of jokes to morbid reality to character development to sci fi to action etc etc etc.

I used to be like that to, but I try to remove myself and just enjoy the direction Dan & Justin want to take. This isn't my show, it's their art, their baby, and they mold it where they want it to go. I think instead of asking if season 3 is what I wish it was, I try to just enjoy it as it's natural progression and as it's own art.

Maybe I'm over analyzing, but I see too many people defending or attacking the season. Really extreme opinions both ways. I think it's great, I thought season 1 and 2 were great. I enjoy seeing where Dan & Justin go in their heads with this and whatever type of episode I get I think it's fun seeing it grow into something I wouldn't expect. I guess it's like having a kid, you probably have a general idea of how you'd like them to grow up but instead come to the realization that you just love seeing them grow. It doesn't matter into what, but the growth is the fun. I like the growth of Rick & Morty. :)

On a lighter note, I am working on casting a pickle rick so I'm sure some of you will find some fun in that!

I think the first ep and pickle Rick are on a different level to the rest of the eps this season. This latest one was alright, but it's a shame we didn't get to see that mermaid puss.

Yeah compared to the rest of the season i think the last episode was my least favorite so far. I really enjoyed the whole season up until now. Especially Ep.1 and pickle rick .. vindicators & toxins were not bad either.

I honestly loved the idea of the latest episode. It could have been really cool, and it was in some ways.

But it never really resolved to anything interesting and at the end I just felt like it was a waste of time.

I have no doubt he, and the citadel, will come back around.

But on it's own, this episode just felt like a simple setup drawn out too far.

hmm.. i think it was great to have an entire spin-off story and the accompanying character development condensed into an episode, a testament to how strong the show's writing is. the multiple plot twists are great and the humor is there as always. the students 'storyline' is the weakest but still quite decent and doesn't bring down the rest of the episode

why not? Ricks have many personalities, different dispositions, and can vary on the spectrum of intelligence (tall Morty lol). makes sense that some Ricks settle for mediocrity

The show centers around  Rick being Rick.

Rick is Rick because of how smart he is..    the demonstrated realization of -nothingness-, -godlessness-, -pointlessness-,  of the universe DOES NOT take a tremendously high intelligence.  Nearly all ricks would cross this line..

If we are to assume that all ricks have approximately higher than average intelligence,   then they should all converge on severely anti-social, nihilistic, and be fundamentally incompatible with one another.

A cohesive society requires service members (those factory / police jobs)  where no Ricks would be suited for.

And its inconceivable that ANY rick would choose to STAY in that life..

Again, it's not all spelled out..   but there is tramendous conflict in this very episode, when they mention ricks are all very close in intelligence,  but some occupy menial labors..

This would never be the case..  so they've mis-built the citadel..   it should've been ONLY robots or morties,  doing ALL the tasks that ricks wouldn't be bothered with..

well, given the infinite amount of Ricks across different realities, i'm sure there are many many Ricks with the temperament and disposition of a factory worker or policeman. there is no reason to create a Rickaradise where machines/Mortys do all the work and the Ricks sip coconuts on beaches - it's a society, not a resort or retirement home. also i wouldn't it past the smartest Ricks who run the show (until evil Morty's appearance) to 'repurpose' Ricks for otherwise ill-suited jobs. i think this is alluded to when rebel Rick said to the SWAT Ricks 'I'm more Rick than any of you'

Again, you can loosen definitions and --make it work--    but a cohesive society like that is so far against the fundamental characteristics of  -Rick- ,  that it's just not very believable.

That is to say,  Here you can win the argument, and Force yourself to believe by _elaborate methods_..

That doesn't change the fact that it wasn't very logical by design.

I don't really like continued plots in stand-alone episodes. It ruined South Park, it ruined Adventure Time, and now it's ruining Rick and Morty.

Yeah the set up for the continuing episode (I'm assuming there will be one) seemed like it was a bit much, but I'm not that against continued plots like the party and then freezing/breaking time episodes, but I think that each episode should be good and not compromised because its a part of a larger plot, but who knows maybe the continuation episode will be really good and it will be worth it.

I think that some of why I don't like the citadel episode is because it doesn't have the Rick and Morty c-137 or jerry or summer or anyone that we know, they are all unknown characters that I don't have any emotional attachment to, or know what to expect from them.

I think the "interdimensional cable" episode of this season was really good. Mixed things up; I felt the second season's was a bit stale compared to the first, and this third season version was a great way to make it unique. I enjoyed it quite a bit. A good idea to place it after last week's phenomenal episode as it gave us something to wind down to and just laugh at.

Finally this Cartoon has entered into true interest from my end.

Before all the previous seasons attracted the children and alike but now the real darker episodes are revealing themselves like rotten fruit.  Just like life in general, it isn't all Peaches and Cream but a whole lot of decayed dreams and possibilities.

Hope it picks up gear into true decadence and moroseness and never tries to ride the idiot train to happyville, like most american entertainment these days.

After watching the season 3 final, I am of the mind season 3 was better than 2, but not quite as good as 1.

Rather than playing up each character's development and trait development and creating entire episodes with continuing threads leaving you with this unsatisfied feel, the writer's seemed to rein themselves in when regarding a character's progression and instead gave them room to exist and breath in their current state. A wise decision, especially w/ character's like Jerry and Rick.

The meta of the show is still there, but they are slowing down on expanding the characters  repercussions in lieu of making funny jokes.

Does this make any sense to anyone but me? It's kinda difficult to explain, but yeah, I enjoyed this season a lot and felt like it was a closer return to the winning formula from season 1.

Maaaaan... it's be freakin' sweet to write for this show.

Next week should be the final episode. Season 3 has 10 episodes.
Apparently it was planned to do 14 episodes but Dan Harmon - the creator - said in an interview: "We were supposed to do 14 this season. And part of our slowness meant we did less episodes than we were supposed to do"

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily fromNarodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick and Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existencial catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Rick and Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
Very busy with studies atm.

Justin mentioned they are actively working on season 4 too on the H3 podcast last week, but it's months away at least. Perhaps some of the planned episodes for 3 are going to make it to 4.

Also I wouldn't call R&M's humor subtle... at all. But I do think part of its success is that it easily appeals to both smart and dumb people in the same way Futurama did.

It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

I don't think you are using iq correctly in your discussion.

But,  it's dangerous to generally emphasize that a rick and morty fan is more intelligent than fans of any other show.

It's the same type of intellectual elitism used to justify social inequality.

We are experts of our own lives.  While certain singular aspect may be deemed more important to the greater protraction of humanity,  it could not be assumed to be possible or have occurred without the collectively varied efforts beneath.

Where would the scientist be without the farmer that grows his food.

It's ok to align general logic with greed, survival of the fittest, kin-selection (bio-innate-racism), exploitation of the weaker.

However,   it's also important to recognize the limits to that perspective, as it has become painfully obvious that no totalitary power truly exist.  All heads are lifeless without body.  Disrespect the body, and we all die.

Rick, as a character is a god like super-being, at capacity of near universal sufficiency.  However, he is not without origin, and while we are interested in his story timeline, it would be callous to ignore that he is a god born of past lessers.

he may represent the culmination of natural selection,  but to forget who or what built rick, such a fan is merely narrowly a fantasy power addict, nothing more.

Such a fan is not more intelligent,  he's only luckily befallen the popular doctrine of worship of the time period.   currently, academia, intellectual elitism
