Keyboard Carpetbaggers?
« on: Sat, 26 August 2017, 12:22:54 »
Has anyone else noticed a lot of ICs and GBs lately from people with like 4 posts and no ties to the community? I admittedly haven't been around much in the past year or so, but Geekhack will always have a special place in my heart, and since I've been back lurking around lately it seems like I see a lot more of this than I remember. Is it just me?

I have noticed the same. I guess it's the thing to do.

By the way, it's good to see you're still around, even of not as active.

People just want to gather as many orders now, so they spread wide and hope for the most.

Most of these ICs won't actually happen, but people like to entertain their ideas and hope that theirs is the one that catches on.

Been that way for a bit now.  People coming in, not giving a **** about community, looking to make a buck.

if you have no posts around here i just assume you're part of some group that has gotten privy to the fact theres money to be made in mech keyboards. Kinda like all these asian jewelry and toy factories making "artisan" caps and laughing all the way to the bank.

I'm fairly new here, but I have noticed the same thing.

I thought it was weird, but no one ever seemed to say anything, so I figured it was the norm.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

TP is hardly the carpetbagger type.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpetbagger
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

...ICs and GBs lately from people with like 4 posts and no ties to the community?

A few of them I notice are more active on places like MD, but I look at some of them with a healthy dose of skepticism and wariness, even if the idea looks promising.

...people like to entertain their ideas and hope that theirs is the one that catches on.

Agreed, I think some are just wishful thinking and little chance of follow through.

...not giving a **** about community, looking to make a buck.

Maybe true for many, but I would also level that accusation at some established GB organizers.

i've usually felt that those people either don't realise what type of work goes on behind the scenes to make a group buy happen, or that they just want to throw a design out there and see if people like it and then just palm it off to massdrop

tp4 is part of the cultural fabric of Geekhack. Many have joked that you're not really a Geekhacker until most of your posts are in Off Topic, and tp4tissue is a perfect example of this.
