well...crud..slipped cut hand..had to go to er in ambulance
« on: Thu, 02 November 2017, 13:27:55 »
so.. typing is a pain (literally)..now

I fell in a hotel over weekend smashed the toilet in bathroom (luckily clean bowel) cut finger (artery nicked) blood everywhere..luckily my wife kept her head and medics arrived quickly... not sure what the deal will be with my hand /finger it is too early for dr to tell if nerve damage/ mobility issues will exist.

somewhat amusingly i was nearly the only not under arrest person in the ER at 3am ....  the dr. looked at photos medics took and says "you destroyed that toilet" to which i respond "phrasing" ..which being calm enough to make the archer joke made me happy

but all in all this week is 1/5 wouldn't recommend.

left handed mouse set up for now (i am left handed injured hand is right hand..small  upside i guess).  and finger in dressing (wont post wound it is somewhat gruesome however)... quite a f*cking drag..

Ouch. I hope there is no permanent damage.

BTW. All movement in finger joints is done with tendons from muscles in your forearm and not controlled by nerves in the fingers. Sensory nerves can sometimes grow back: I once lost senses in my thigh which later returned.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Ouch!  I thought toilets were stronger than that?

And I second that on nerves coming back.  I broke my hand a few months back and lost a lot of sensation in my right pinky, but most of that has already come back.

And I hope your feeling returns too--just be patient as I never thought it would and then slowly noticed some changes.  In my case I think it's not fully healed because the bone isn't fully healed, so the lump from the bone healing process is putting pressure on the nerve.  (I can tap the bump on my hand and it shoots sensations into a pinky finger joint.)

Well, it doesn't surprise me now knowing that you're a big dude.  I have a really good friend of that size.  Saw him lift a car engine block by himself once.  I bet he'd take down a toilet if he fell too.

I don't think you need the ring finger that much for typing anyway, because it doesn't handle all that many letters..

I wonder if there's a program that helps analyze what keys you hit and how often--that would be extremely useful for figuring out what custom layout would be best for an individual.  Now that I think about it, I think there is one somewhere online...I think...maybe...

Look at some text expansion software, you can get some benefits from just a few minutes use.

There's an ahk script (mirror board) that you turn your keyboard into a one handed board.  If you press space and f, you'll get j.  You could implement it with touch cursor if you would prefer.

Or you could use some holiday time to let yourself heal.

Hope it heals quickly.

You'll heal in time and will be back on the proverbial bike as well as that new one in no time.  :thumb:  Just don't overexert during the healing process or you could set yourself back/damage something permanently.  The body has an amazing way of healing itself, but we have to give it time and space to do so.
