Wood frame wobble
« on: Sat, 30 December 2017, 17:39:34 »
So I recently picked up a 60% zebrawood frame off of kbdfans (one of these)-
185474-0

And I absolutely love the look of it, but it does have a slight warp to the bottom that causes the right front corner to wobble. I've heard a lot of similar stories with wood frames, so I'd prefer not to bother RMAing it and to fix it instead.

I was thinking about picking up some plastic shelf/drawer liner and putting it between that corner's rubberized foot and the frame itself. Good plan, or better to just RMA?

I used a little piece of black craft foam that I cut off a larger sheet.  .  Easy peasy, can remove or move  if needed

Oh that's a good idea. I dont have much height diff to worry about really. Like a mm maybe, so that would work. I'm going to go to the hobby shop tomorrow.

Does anyone know where to find the oblong rubber feet that they use on the bottom of these? I see them ship with pretty much every 60% kit but I'll like to buy spme for a different project.

You could probably use a little wood filler putty for a more permanent solution. Any home improvement store should have it.

I have some of that, but I'm really not confident in my ability to fill in the recessed foot area with enough to offset the wobble without needing to sand it and possibly changing the finish of the surrounding area. That's why my current plan is to cut a spacer to match the foot, and put that between the rubber foot and the frame where you can't see it.

as long as the wood is not warping enough to twist the pcb longitudinally ,  it should be fine.

but any amount of pcb Twist is very bad.

I don't think there's really any twist happening with the PCB itself or the plate, but now you have me a bit worried so I took a closer look.

The more I look at it the more I think that the frame isn't really warped, it just seems like sort of a wonky cut/sanding job on that edge. All of the other edges are nice and straight, so I tried to take a couple pictures of it (excuse my crappy cell phone camera) to show what's going on. Obviously not the most scientific method but I threw a grid on there as well to help show how the caps and by extension switches sit in relation to everything else.

The total height difference between that right front corner and the other three is less than a millimeter. Two index cards sitting under it is all it takes to stop the wobble, but I don't want to risk damaging my board in the long run so I'll defer to your judgement.

I wouldnt worry about it if its that small of a difference. I would just find the softest rubber button feet things to counter any minor wobble on your desktop.

Just put some craft foam on there and be done with it.  I have it on mine. Don’t even notice it’s there years later.  They are great cases for the price.

I think that's what I'll end up doing. Thanks for the advice and happy new year everyone!
