[help] New HHKB Type-S “suction” noise?
« on: Tue, 29 January 2019, 19:24:31 »
Hey guys, I have a brand new Type-S which is mostly working great - no Topre “whistling” or “farting”, nor are there any “pinging” or rattle noises with the springs, all issues I’ve seen mentioned online - and it is very silent on nearly every key.

What I have noticed with the Backspace, however, is that when fully bottomed out and let go there is a noise that sounds like the rubber cup is suctioning against the board and then releasing with a soft pop. The sound is pretty much identical to what’s shown here:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VUL739KJFe0

This doesn’t happen if you don’t bottom out (but I find bottoming out hard to avoid). I’m wondering if others have experienced this/whether it’s “normal”, and if it’s liable to go away with use, or if I should look into fixing it?

Thank you.

I've experienced this on multiple HHKBs, it's super annoying

It seems to happen because from the factory the dome mat sticks to the PCB, sometimes causing that "suction". I've found that pulling the dome mat off the PCB and putting it back on helps.

i've experienced this on my fc660c and rf87u.

I did lot of searching on reddit, someone suggested to take some keyboard lube and lube the spring/dome inside.

What was happening in my case, was that the spring was getting 'stuck' on the dome. It kinda felt/sounded like removing scotch tape. hard to describe, but that's the closest analogy that came to my mind.

i lubed up the spring/inside of the dome, reassembled, all good.

It should go away after awhile from what I've seen..

And stop trying to not bottom out....there is no point and with normal typing on Topre it is not possible (unless you have 30g) to do...you're just slowing yourself down.

I still have no idea where this don't bottom out thing comes from...it is complete BS..

Young people read  2mm actuation,  they don't haz engineering xperience,  their highskool no offer phyx,  They think, oh, if I only go 2mm , it's faster right ?

Thanks for the help all.

And yeah, I definitely don’t care to avoid bottoming out, I’m just tempted to avoid bottoming out on backspace so I don’t hear that unpleasant sound. But I’m hoping as you mentioned that it might go away with some usage and might just be a break-in thing...

if it doesn't go away, some sort of drying powder, check its conductivity before use
