Need Help With My Purchase
« on: Wed, 06 March 2019, 11:42:06 »
Hello Everyone,

Long story short, I have been coming to GH for quite sometime but never posted. I have been eyeing the filco ninja majestouch for sometime, however I was never sold on it at a 100%, it was in the 90s though based on what i heard. Lately I heard about the Leopold FC660C and that also looks interesting. I have always wanted to build my own, as I like to go hands on with things and am usually very percise about what I like and that goes from function to form, aesthetics and everything, however given that this will be my first mechanical I was not sure that going for a custom would be the best idea, I am still wrestling with that thought though as you can tell. I also heard about wasd offering you to customize your own, but after taking a look at that, you are only customizing a few options here and there.

Is the filco still a good option? Is the Leopold one any better? I am not just talking about the subjective features such as topre or mx cherry or detachable cables as well as what I am using it for. Is there a site that offers deeper customizations such as if I want say an open sandwich or aluminium case etc? Do you think building one myself would be difficult for a first time?

Regards

Filco & Leopold are both great brands. Lots of folks don't like Filco because they don't have any extra features like backlighting or programmability but they are very high quality.

As to building your own, have a look here.

Thanks for the link, I will be looking at that.
Regarding the filco dislike point, I actually really dislike backlights as I find them to cheapen the look personally, so I am more than ok with no backlighting

I'm definitely a leopold fanboy.

I'd buy Leopold over filco anyday, filco keycaps are trash.

But I also really like the 980m/C layout.

If you want topre you can't really build your own without some major work, nothing seems impossible anymore but that would be close.

Yeah I heard and saw pictures of the filco keycaps getting shiny and all. I definitely did not like that either. What about the build quality for Leopold's?

In my opinion for the cost it can't be beat.

There will always be outliers with a random issue but I've owned around 12 Leopold boards over the years and never had a problem.
