Programmable Mouse Pad
« on: Mon, 09 May 2016, 11:27:46 »
So, I've been thinking for a while to create a muse pad with some electronics.

The idea is to have an aluminum top that serves as the mouse pad surface and then a frost layer of acrylic underneath it. This layer of acrylic will have a cavity in the center to house some electronics. There will be a thin frost acrylic base to enclose the the electronics on the bottom and bolts in the four corners to tie everything together.

Inside the mousepad will be basically a few RGB LEDs, a Teensy and what else?

I've been thinking, what can be added to the mousepad that will have some utility? I'm thinking a few indicator LEDs that can later be programmed for whatever functions and maybe a few switches on the bottom left hand that can be programmed to macros or whatever.

Am I over-thinking this?

Who cares if you are
 :))
Some random ideas off the top off my head

Pressure sensor- could detected when you put your hand down, lift the mouse, push down on mouse, etc. Not sure what youd use this for, but it could be interesting

E ink mousepad- for the cool factor

Touchscreen/digitizer capability- increased input/functionality

i thought razer already makes this.?

I heard razor also makes mechanical keyboards.

It just adds unnecessary complexity. (Do one thing and do it right, and all that jazz.)

I can think of regulated heating (to avoid cold surface), lights, vibrating to remove shake off dust (like DSLRs), integrated peripherals,… but all of it is completely unnecessary, and there are much better alternative solutions.

A wireless inductive mouse (see Wacom) would be neat though.
