GMK SOYAMILK

A refreshing set that’s straight out of your childhood lunch box and afternoon snacks. A heartfelt homage to the soyamilk that we grew up with and remember fondly.
We drew inspiration from a vintage soyamilk drink box from an era long before our time, hoping to provide a throwback aesthetic that resonates with our childhood.

GROUP BUY PAGE IS HERE!

SOYAMILK FOR CHARITY
Because GMK Soyamilk is a food-themed keycap set, inspired by a drink that raised us, we want to use this opportunity and platform to pay back to our heritage, particularly to the elderly in the Asian American community that shaped us into who we are.

As a design team, we are pledging to donate a percentage of our profits towards the charity Heart of Dinner, which has a goal of “nourishing NYC’s East Asian elders with love and food every week”.
Proof of donation will be provided for posterity after the group buy.
If this is a cause that resonates with you, please consider supporting the project or donating towards the charity!

CHANGE LOG

More
2021.05.21
All of our international vendors have been confirmed!

Updated kitting released! You guys sure filled out a lot of IC forms, and we did our best to accommodate!

-Basekit now has better ISO support, F13, and full Alice and Arisu compatibility.
-ISO users get novelties too!
-Small keyboards don’t have to get left out, please give us feedback on our Extensions Kit if you really need it!
-Quite a few of you asked for Latin alphas, and we are pleased to unveil the Latin Alphas kit.
We still stand by our choice to leave Cangjie sublegends as the default alphas in our basekit, as it stays true to our chosen theme and our personal heritage.

Please be sure to fill out our NEW IC form so we can gather your feedback on our new kitting!

Big thanks to Entity. for whipping up some awesome renders!

2021.05.26
Minor changes to kitting
-Changed 2.5u spacebar in the 40s kit to be an additional 2.0u spacebar

2021.06.07
Colour update!
-We have chosen a new blue for the kit to more closely match the shade of blue that you can see in the old kit renders
-Blue is now RAL 260 50 25 instead of RAL 5023
-While working on our other renders, we noticed that the shades of our colours were not matching the vision we had from our original kits, so we have adjusted the blue to better fit our preferences
-Check out our new kit renders and let us know how you feel!

2021.07.19
Collab reveals! We are thrilled to announce that we are going to have metal artisans available for group buy.
Check out our RAMA Works and Monokei artisan keycaps!
Additionally, we are very excited to be working with RNCables on a Soyamilk themed custom paracorded USB cable!

Minor kitting update: We removed the arrows from the numpad because we felt that they were extraneous and took away from the clean minimal aesthetic that we prefer.

2021.08.19
We’ve been saying “Coming Soon TM” for the last few months, but this time we mean it!
Deskmats are finally here!
We are so excited to present our two designs: Slice of Home and Milk Carton.
Slice of Home was inspired by the memories evoked by the Tong Lau buildings of Hong Kong, a style of housing that combined residential and commercial spaces into a vibrant and tight knit community.
The Milk Carton mat was of course inspired by our favourite flavours and varieties of Soyamilk, and was designed by our good friend retainerbox! A massive thank you to them for their time and creative expertise.
Check out their other work at their Instagram page!

2021.08.24
The announcement that you’ve all been waiting for! A confirmed group buy date!
GMK Soyamilk will be going to group buy on October 1, 2021. Mark it in your calendars!
We have been blown away at how much support we have gotten for this project, and we are so excited to see it come to fruition.

A big thank you to everyone who has filled out our IC form too! Thanks to your feedback, we have decided to run our Extensions Kit, aka the snack pack!

A condensed kit pricing breakdown is as follows:
Base Kit - $131
Novelties Kit - $52
Latin Alphas Kit - $50
Accent Kit - $30
Extensions Kit - $33

2021.09.10
Soyamilk For Charity!
This update means a lot to us. From the start of the project, we wanted to find some way to give back to the community that raised and shaped us into who we are today.
We have decided that the way we want to show this is to donate a percentage of the profits we receive as designers to a charity that we believe strongly in: Heart of Dinner.
This organization aims to provide and deliver necessary pantry and food items to East Asian elders in the NYC area.
If this is a cause that resonates with you, please consider supporting the project or donating to the charity!

Sneaky Kitting Update:
We added in R1 End and Pg Dn for 1800 compatibility.
Updated kit pricing is subject to change, pending new quote.
The change is not expected to be major, as we are only adding two 1u keys.

2021.09.20
More collabs??
We are incredibly excited to be working with Joe from IV Works on this collaboration project.
We are all huge fans of the Av3 keyboard, and to be able to work with him on this one is incredible.

Also RN Cables surprised us by coming up with an incredible juice box artisan for us!
The details on it are exquisite. They will be available for purchase alongside the cables.

2021.09.23

Added additional render images to the IC page of the set on keyboards that weren't beige/soya coloured.
Sorry to neglect all the other colours for so long, we just got a little caught up in the whole theme!
Hope that these new images give a better idea of how the set will look on your keyboard!
Also the IC page was getting a little lengthy, so formatting has been added to streamline the post.

Love the colors! Very evocative of the theme.

If this Cangjie train keeps picking up steam (and I hope it does), we're gonna need a new term to affectionately sit beside "weeb" and "Koreaboo".

Also in case of split spacebars, is it possible to include two alpha color Alice spacebars in the base kit?

Sealed in history, nicely done lol

@OP - Personally I prefer alpha-colored spacebars and I think some others also probably follow, since it's the default. For spacebars kit, will regular-colored spacebars be avail?

Finally some good looking clever novelties that aren’t just boring line art. I really appreciate the effort.

Edit: yeah the space bar kit should have alpha coloured splits. I wouldn’t bother putting more than one 6U bar in it though. Just one white one.

1. Is the R4 branch novelty design supposed to be of dry soy? If so, that's not really what it looks like from what I can tell. If it's wheat, then the design makes a bit more sense.

2. Doing just one form of Cangjie (simplified vs traditional) has some unfortunate and deep political implications, you sort of have to run both to not come off like a ****. Or offer the necessary interchangeable keys for each style in one base kit.

I hope to not overstep anything here, but as a counterpoint: Based on the clear visual inspiration from Vitasoy, I think (emphasis on "think") it's acceptable to focus on sublegends bearing the official script of where that company is located.

That said, I agree it would be nice to offer interchangeable keys for those who would prefer it.

We elected to only have Cangjie on the alphas to be as versatile and inclusive as possible, while paying homage to our own heritage. Since these keys are the same for both traditional and simplified, we thought that it would eliminate the need for multiple kits.

Additionally, just to clarify for some other comments/feedback, Cangjie is used for Chinese, and Hirigana is for Japanese, they are not the same language.

Some questions about kitting:

- ne f13
- why are there arrows in your spacebar kit? shouldn't accent be in base?

other than that, the kits looks solid and i love vitasoy. good set.

Now that I've had a day to actually take it in/think about it, my 2 cents.

I'd also love a latin set with no sublegends. And maybe alternative spacebars accent in red? Also would like to see the kits more broken up in general to reduce pricing - no number kit in base in particular.  I'd love even more options in the novelties kit, maybe a brown novelty for the malted flavour. I agree with some of the other comment, a bit odd to have the arrows in the spacebar kit. :)

Slight resemblance of GMK Birch in renders. Iso support seems off... 1u SB would be nice for proper 3-1-3 support, pls label kit renders as well. Hard to tell sizes in spacebar kit.

What a nostalgia set and the cream color is so refreshing <3

I've submitted a response to the IC form but just want to chime in with my two cents here:
- The blue on vitasoy is a darker blue (just grabbed one from the pantry and checked), so while the lighter blue is very aesthetically pleasing, it doesn't hit me hard with the nostalgia So I originally typed this (and entered my IC form with this) and after digging up some other pictures for reference, I also realized there's a less sugar version that comes with the lighter blue color, so now I am torn lol..
- The novelty designs are A++++++, great job on those!!
- I am a bit sad that this is a GMK set (higher price point, longer wait time), was hoping maybe other manufacturers can bring this set to life faster (and cheaper)
- I really love the cream colored keys with blue legend on the mods (and thank you for icon mods <3), would love to see an alt alpha (maybe latin based) with cream keys and blue legend to match mods.

Also this is a long shot but I am saying it out loud anyways -- I LOVE all Vitasoy flavors!! It would be super cool if there could be a bunch of 1u keys with different flavors, like a light brown/dark brown one for malt, lavender/brown for coconut, beige/brown for chocolate, black/grey for black soy, light green/dark green for melon -- inspiration: https://imgur.com/a/TRUdHq4 -- yes, this will make a very expensive novelty set if done with GMK (so hopefully other manus can be considered?)...

The colorway of this set is incredible to me.  The novelties are great.

I'm just an Ohio boy and so I don't have a nostalgic connection to soyamilk from my childhood and even my conversion away from dairy didn't involve that much of it either.  That being said I am an oatmilk (and alt-milk) boy and this colorway feels a lot like the modern oatmilk branding that I'm familiar with (Oatly, Califia Barista blend both are cream colored and have light blue branding).

Latin alphas fit better in my specific case, as well as some other American alt-milkers who don't have a connection from childhood, and as such would maybe be worth offering as an add-on alphas kit.  Priority should definitely go to your design intention.  Keeping keycap designs personal is the way to do it, imo, and for that reason I love this design as a whole.

I might be wrong here but I do think that this more muted blue was used in 80s and 90s packaging. I guess the printing technology back in the day resulted in less dark colours. At the very least i remember seeing this blue until the late 2000s, so it very much hits the nostalgia for me.

Doing just one form of Cangjie (simplified vs traditional) has some unfortunate and deep political implications, you sort of have to run both to not come off like a ****. Or offer the necessary interchangeable keys for each style in one base kit.

How can you be "as versatile and inclusive as possible" while excluding compatibility for the other style. If you knew why either style has political implications, you should state clearly in the IC why you have chosen the specific style you have. This is a drink from Hong Kong, yet you don't have traditional sublegend compatibility. So, I'm not quite sure what heritage you're paying homage to. Just needs a better explanation really.

Also, your comment on only doing Cangjie on the alphas demonstrates my point because there are very distinct differences on alpha keys between traditional and simplified. This is why Grundlemere ran two base kits for Shanshui. Maybe you should take a closer look at the "V" key for example.

Please note: I'm being extra critical on this point because I don't want you to be accused of something you didn't intend on in the first place. Better to figure it out now, that's what the IC process is for. Just clarifying because this is not a personal attack on you.

I just want to point out that there are actually no differences in the alpha keys between traditional and simplified cangjie -- In grundlemere's original IC for GMK Shanshui, they mentioned the following:
Quote
The Simplified Chinese base kit offers sublegends in the Cangjie Chinese typing system, while modifiers are rendered in Simplified Chinese + icon
And
Quote
The Traditional Chinese base kit offers sublegends in the Cangjie Chinese typing system, while modifiers are rendered in Traditional Chinese + icons

The idea of Cangjie is to break a character into "parts" and use the separate keys to represent the smaller, more distinctive parts in order to reassemble a complex character. You can use Cangjie to type both traditional and simplified: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cangjie_input_method
Quote
Cangjie has become open-source software and is on every computer system that supports traditional Chinese characters, and it has been extended so that Cangjie is compatible with the simplified Chinese character set.

I'm surprised that 難 on the X key isn't different, since I think? there's a simplified version of it.

Are we all looking at the same kits? Soyamilk doesn't have Chinese numerals, there's no perceptible difference for 女, and the difference on 火 is arguably stylistic more than a deliberate feature of the scripts.

I'm surprised that 難 on the X key isn't different, since I think? there's a simplified version of it.

There is 难 which is the simplified version of the character 難, but that actually is not a character part, but a special key representing "complex/difficult" character to cover character parts that are hard to decompose: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cangjie_input_method#Exceptions

So in this case it doesn't really matter how it is represented, matters more for people to know that's the special key for hard to decompose character parts.

The differences for alphas in Cangjie simplified vs traditional are in the V and F keys, and on the 7, 8, and 0 keys.
I don't see the V/F/7/8/0 keys be different (at least not from GMK Shanshui's IC post) -- would you mind pointing out with some photos if I missed that?

And yes, traditional vs simplified numbers are indeed different, and if we continue to use GMK Shanshui as a reference, then it actually includes both (simplified in number row, traditional in numpad), but tbf even regions using traditional Chinese characters will use the "simplified" version for numbers just because it's easier to write (except back in the days when you write paper checks or bank notes, which you have to use traditional Chinese numbers even for simplified Chinese regions, just like how you will use cap letters for checks to remove ambiguity).

The team of designers are all Chinese, so we are very aware of the sensitivity of the situation regarding our language, in fact bringing up the v and f keys, the two cangjie legends are the same, its just that in the traditional kit the 女 and 火 have flourishes in their typefaces that evoke a more traditional method of writing the word; furthermore we do not have the 7, 8, or 0 keys in our kitting. Its the same in both trad and simplified in this case. I appreciate your concern about our language, but I think we are fully aware of what we are doing

Too bad someone who quoted me, didn't use all of it, with "obvious /s" at the end. I'll restrain my usage of sarcasm.

Sorry, I don't mean to intrude, but I saw the comment too and I kept a record of it because it was kinda offensive; and I see that you have changed it now. But, here was the original comment, it definitely did not have 'sarcasm' in it.

I guess with that you can claim everything is fake then; I screenshotted it because I found it pretty insensitive to say something like this on a keycap set clearly inspired by asian heritage in a time like this. I mean I usually lurk, but I felt that I had to speak out cause he was lying about putting the sarcasm bit in his post. Also you may see that the screenshot was the original post, without the edit stamp; i guess you may believe what you may, but it correlates with the quote that Afresh said was "altered" which it clearly wasn't

Please fix ISO support. It looks like you can't decide if you want just ISO layout support or UK ISO so you made a really bad mix of both.

Look at GMK Handarbeit R2 to see what ISO layout support looks like and GMK Noire to see what UK ISO looks like.

Oh.... so your first reaction for saying something clearly insensitive and not productive is to blame everyone else for calling you out? taking jabs at the creator's asian heritage as just pandering for "weebs"? and then rather than just apologizing for it "clearly being dumb and insignificant" you double down? Jeez dude... I can't believe you are the one behind GMK Art... this interaction really speaks to your character as a person. Once again attaching the comment for people to see what you think is just a "dumb and insignificant comment"

I think we should all appreciate the fact that the designers are using sublegends to celebrate their heritage. The fact that you chose to satirize that is, in my opinion, distasteful and I totally understand why people are offended. However, it is significant for you to realize, as an adult, that undermining another ethnicity or heritage is a serious issue at the current state of the society.

Claiming it as sarcasm is not a get out of jail free card and you should not double down on your insensitivity.

I would work on that Novelties for the ALT, Control key. Everything else is nice and clean with clean lines and then you get a much more organic shape. Even a single soybean, spoon, on each would be much more in inline with the design.

Doing just one form of Cangjie (simplified vs traditional) has some unfortunate and deep political implications, you sort of have to run both to not come off like a ****. Or offer the necessary interchangeable keys for each style in one base kit.

Since these keys are the same for both traditional and simplified, we thought that it would eliminate the need for multiple kits.

Based on a lot of staring at GMK Shanshui, apparently there are about two (?) characters in Cangjie that aren't actually the same between traditional and simplified users?  The ones corresponding to F and V on an ANSI board.  If you're running with Cannonkeys, they should have all the right legends for that.  Some of the differences are really subtle, but it might help dodge the political controversy.

GMK Soyamilk is using alphas from Shanshui's traditional kits. Your point about the drink doesn't make sense. You could say the simplified F and V key aren't offered - but in reality simplified chinese hand writing often write those characters the same way is in Shanshui's traditional kit. I believe that is a stylistic difference in computer fonts.

The colors are really pleasing! Some small things that I think would be nice to see:

1. Latin alpha kit
2. Top-left aligned icon mods (the renders show both top-left and centered, so I just wanted to add my 2 cents)
3. Alpha colored split space keys, and second B in base.

Vita soy milk has always been my all time favorite drink! I would definitely get a set of these for my childhood memory.

If you get can glass/resin artisan to simulate the glass bottle feeling that would be extra points.

Also, your comment on only doing Cangjie on the alphas demonstrates my point because there are very distinct differences on alpha keys between traditional and simplified. This is why Grundlemere ran two base kits for Shanshui. Maybe you should take a closer look at the "V" key for example.

You should definitely do more research on Chinese characters and Cangjie b4 making a huge miss here LOL.

Doing just one form of Cangjie (simplified vs traditional) has some unfortunate and deep political implications, you sort of have to run both to not come off like a ****. Or offer the necessary interchangeable keys for each style in one base kit.

Since you brought up the compatibility for catering different dialects for Chinese, I feel an urge to weigh in a little bit of my own opinion in this regard

It was nice that Shanshui did offer 2 base kits, one simplified one traditional, but in a Chinese dialect context, it was not a good culturally compatible kit for HK/Taiwan-ers as we dont use 回車、上檔 these characters. Sometimes the littlest things are the thing that bug us the most, and I wouldnt say he had done a great job on delivering a set that caters all Chinese in a sense that he was intended to do so.

Also, on top of that, in Chinese context for Cangjie, it was supposed to be traditional Chinese as when it was made (ths system), it was made in traditional Chinese. Other than that, I'd also like to point out, if there is a simplified Chinese version at all for this system, there's only one word needed to be replaced, which would be Z - 難.

It was nice to bring out the fact that there is a possibility, a window of chance to cater different people's culture, but in this case, if it is forced into twisting the nature of a traditional Chinese linguistic system, it may seem to be hypocritical at the very least.

The differences for alphas in Cangjie simplified vs traditional are in the V and F keys, and on the 7, 8, and 0 keys.
If you actually knew Chinese, you would know there’s no difference between trad and simplified on how 火, 女, 7, 8 and 0 are written.

If you are referring to the numerals that Grundlemere used on the traditional numpad keys, they are a set called “Big Writing”, which is hardly ever used in practice, regardless of traditional or simplified - barring on cashier cheques or certain formal documents. The lack of ubiquity makes them an odd choice to add to his kit in the first place, but I digress.

Also not sure why you are using Grundlemere’s set as the gold standard to scrutinise this set. If anything, you should fault Grundlemere for failing to differentiate between 难/難, which is the only key on the entire Canjie range to have an actual difference between simplified/traditional.

Anyhow, don’t think it is wise to give your opinion on a matter you are not familiar with. Might make you look like you’re picking bones out of an egg.

The base kit is missing R1 End and Page Down keys that are necessary for basic 1800 layout support. Which is unusual considering you decided to add the 1U Zero key, which is used mostly in 1800 layouts.

Another point is that you are offering split (+) in numpad with 1U plus and minus keys, without offering the equals key substitute for the minus key that is then used on R2.

The snack pack could use the addition of 2.25U shift key for 660 layout support.

Please add a red enter key to the base kit. Since we are getting a blue rama keycap, might as a well add a red enter key for those wanting a contrast between reds and blues.

Your kits are currently missing 1800/CP, 65% and 660 compat because you decided not to include R1 End, R1 PgDn, R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn, R4 2.25u Shift in your base kit. Which is fine sometimes. However, you also forgot about the flip side of that coin and you didn't include them in any of the other kits either. Which is not fine, because now buyers literally don't have any way of getting the compat that they need.

GMK Soyamilk For Charity!

As for kitting, we consulted our vendors and decided to add R1 End and Pg Dn to the basekit.

Hi! Great catch, our render of the Extensions kit was incorrect. It is a 2u shift in the Extensions kit, with the 1.75u shift being included in the base kit. The render has now been corrected.

Hi Everyone!

We are pretty much one week away from the launch of our group buy!
Another big thank you to everyone for their feedback and suggestions, they were invaluable to making this project reality!

Quick update for today, we added some renders of the set on keyboards that were not exclusively soya coloured, we definitely got a little carried away with sticking with a theme.
Hopefully these new renders give you all a better idea of how the set will look on your own keyboard, or provide a little inspiration!

Also, the IC page was getting a little long and unwieldly, so formatting has been added to streamline the post. Hope it is easier to navigate!

We are saddened to announce that our collaboration with RAMA WORKS is no longer viable.
Currently we are seeking alternatives, as our design was something we were very excited for.

Cheers,

I don’t have details, but I’ve seen this happen to a few different GBs recently. I think it’s a Rama thing and not unique to this set

The RAMA was the one thing I was sure of picking up... sad that its not gonna happen.
This is also not the first set that dropped its RAMA collab recently. Guess we will see if there will still be new collabs with RAMA (or if it will move to Hibi-mx (Kate) like GMK DMG R3).
Collection: HHKB Pro 2 type-s, HHKB Pro 2, Evija, Hello m0110, Mysterium TKL, Corne V3
Ordered: Nasu, Iron 165, F77, Safa, W1-AT, Crin, Glare
Sold: Grid 650, Novatouch, FC660c, U80-A, M65-B, HHKB Pro 3, RF 87u, Thermal

One of our team members had fond memories of visiting the Hudson Store in Hong Kong as a child, and we are paying homage to it since it has also closed now.
