I don't know anything about how much tech there is in NoVA (most people in places like Arlington work some sort of government job or lobby), but just with regards to living it's a great place. Right now, I live totally in the country where people have a few acres each and nice views everywhere, housing is pretty cheap as long as you live outside the city, but I'm still within 45 minutes of most major cities here, and an hour from DC. Weather is pretty fair, doesn't drop below 20 or above 95 all that often.

edit: ok now that I actually look into it, it looks like there's at least something here

If you're open to the medical tech market, Minneapolis might be something to consider that I haven't heard mentioned yet.  Great city, and loads to do (like visit Wisconsin, hehe).

Chicago is a pretty easy recommendation if you can deal with the government, taxes, and sheer quantity of people.

Austin was mentioned, and while I don't know a ton about the job industry there, from my few visits I really like Austin and would love to live there some day.  Same with Colorado.

All that said, I haven't lived outside of WI/MN myself, so my experiences are limited to my travels and feedback from friends.

Northshore Chicago. Although expensive, and the northshore moms can be annoying. It's beautiful, though.

Any of them at least hot?  ;)

What do people think of North Carolina? Specifically research triangle and Charlotte? I know some people who are checking it out.

I've lived in two counties, 8 states, and more than 20 cities. I've traveled through almost 40 states, some enough to know my way around pretty decent.

EVERY place has up sides and downs. Crowded/crime, lack of water, too much water, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes. Other states, too much snow/ice or too freaking cold or worse...  I can manage almost anywhere, I've done mountains, beach, deserts, plains, urban, suburb, rural, and honestly, the local population is the biggest thing that would keep me from living somewhere. Cost of living and crime sucks but both are manageable and tolerable, there are things to do everywhere if you are creative. What cannot be replaced or dealt with is the local people, there are sections of this country I hate to even travel through and no way would I live there. Some sections of this country have yet to evolve out of caveman status, granted some areas within them are tolerable, but that's only marginally better.

Good to see someone willing to move away from their original area. I have lots of friends who still reside in my home area and just refuse to try something different.
I had neighbors who had never gone 30 miles from home, they were in their 70's.
They had never been to a city with more than 50k people and avoided any with even 20k. I actually have quite a few customers like this, and it's evident within the first 5 minutes of meeting them that they have never left the area. These people have such a narrow view of the world, it's amazing.

New Jersey..
Show Image

The bad rep, is actually just a joke..  everyone loves it here.. it's a great place to live..

Kinda like when people say yea, pizza is horrible,  because it's obviously So super good.

THe truth is,  how you live is more dependent on Income than "location".    bceause even in a small state like New Jersey,  there are lots and lots of variety of spaces.

If you go to the docks,  it's a mess,  durgs, gangs, $50 rents

If you go to say westfield, tiny house is 700k, great public school, clean quiet streets,

So.. yea.. that's my pitch for New Jersey.

New jersey is crazy varied. You can drive an hour and see the tallest buildings around, nice suburbs, ****ty industrial areas, small towns and farmland.

I personally love living in jersey city. Nice small city vibe, great food and bars, low rent, and I can still go to NYC all the time to see literally everything. Shows, museums, outdoor events, parades, everything is in NYC.

Well, I'm coming to a point in my life where I have to actually make decisions on important aspects of my life, and I'll be moving out in a relatively short period of time, and I'm thinking to my self; Where in the hell do I want to live?

I dislike the south very much, I lived here for a large portion of my life and do not want to return, haven't been to the north east or much of the east cost, really.

I lived in Oregon for a while, but I'm wondering, what are some other nice places to live? I want to be somewhat close to a large city at the very least.

I'm looking to get into the technology field, software developer or something in that area.

I like the cold, so I have no problem with that, fine with rain, pretty much dandy with what most find depressing.  :p

Any thoughts on places that don't have insane costs of living but are nice places? I'm leaning towards the northeast as I haven't been there and it would be a breath of fresh air, per-say.

Any thoughts or input to help out someone who is rather clueless? I just really want to try somewhere new

With Florida you can mingle with tons of people from all areas of the globe.  A lot of my roommates of the past were from true southern states and they love(d) it here.  People seem to stare quite often.  If you're OK with people staring, storms, and mosquitoes I suppose Florida is OK.

Once I finish high school and have saved up enough to able to afford a move and have some cash to fall back on, I'm moving.

If you're still in high school and want a job in tech, consider where you might go for additional education.

Pornos? What on earth are they saying about my state?  :-X

Also, I've never caught people staring at me. I'm not sure what to say about storms. We are the sunshine state for a reason.  :))

Mosquitoes aren't that bad unless you're out in the Everglades or by any other bodies of water. Worse comes to worst, mosquito repellent.

Depending on where you are you will have to worry about humidity. A lot of people can't tolerate that, or the heat during the summer. I like both these things.

I can attest for Mosquitoes in Central Florida and I guess your staring mileage may vary :p I visited Miami once for some off the wall nightclub and the humidity was papable  :))

Never been to London myself. Toronto isn't my cup of tea but it has tons of stuff. I love Ottawa, I've lived there for a few years. Big city with a small city feel. It's also super close to Montreal for fun trips.

in the us ?

That's a good point. Are you limiting yourself just to the USA? I just assumed that.
I was thinking US for starters, but I've been thinking for a while about moving to denmark, or sweden.
Why are you even considering denmark, silly? Do you want to live in a country full of danskjaveln? No.

Your solution:
-------> SWEDEN
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I've lived a considerable duration (3 years+) in 5 countries now, and so far I like Johannesburg the best. It's somewhere I could look to settle down. The environment and weather is always just perfect.

From my experience it's a little too exaggerated, granted coming from India, which isn't safe either, I might have a more lenient look on security.

Compared to Singapore, I can see the difference for sure, but then again Singapore City is one of the safest cities in the world.

Compared to Singapore, I can see the difference for sure, but then again Singapore City is one of the safest cities in the world.

That's what happens when all crimes are punishable by death though.

(yes, I know I'm exaggerating...a little)

And when everyone's love is cheap, you know what that means.

Too much, too much love. There's too much, too much love.

Good song but really, never enough love.

I've heard good things about Boston, and my wife's area of study is booming there, so I've encouraged her to look for a job there, but I heard it's also crazy expensive.

Boston and the surrounding area (I mostly lived in Cambridge/Somerville) is a great city.

The weather though... too damn cold from November–April, and then a sticky sauna from June–September. May and October are really nice though.

I want to be somewhat close to a large city at the very least.

I'm looking to get into the technology field, software developer or something in that area.

Disclaimer: I'm a Computer Information Technology student.

I've been wrapping up my education here in Indianapolis, and in my capstone course a lot of Indianapolis related information was shared. What I've been told is that a lot of tech jobs are coming to Indianapolis, as several companies are in the process of setting up shop here. Now, I'm not saying 100% you should move here. Ive lived here my whole life, so i don't know much about the other states. But I would suggest keeping Indianapolis on your radar if what I've been told is true.

As for livability, its a good place to live. The cost of living has gone up a bit, but is still cheap compared to some other places in the country.

I like the cold, so I have no problem with that, fine with rain, pretty much dandy with what most find depressing.  :p

We have plenty of cold, plenty of rain, and overall bipolar weather. Especially this year. If you like surprises, you'll like our weather.  ;)

I wouldn't say cheap as hell... generally Europe is very expensive for hotels and such, you'd save a bit on airfare, but it'll never be cheap as hell. Plus Sweden is expensive compared to Canada, if looking at the big cities.
(I am from Sweden but live in Canada)

You say you don't like the south, but want tech.  The main places to go outside of the South are SF (expensive as ****, pretentious, white people liberal) or Seattle, WA (expensive, gloomy, snobby, pretentious, white people liberal).  I wouldn't recommend either.  I lived in Seattle for years and it was awful.

Sine classify it as the South, others don't, but Austin, Texas is a great place for tech. It's cheap, has nice people, there's lots to do, and it has a growing tech sector.  Utah also has a growing tech sector in SLC and Provo if you can get over being in Mormonville.

I'd avoid Oregon.  Not a ton of tech jobs there abd I don't think that will change soon.

This is pretty accurate. I will say that Austin, and Texas in general, is definitely not anything like the South (culturally)(I've lived in AL and TX.) If I were in high school and was serious about a career in programming I would not wait to take classes and just start learning on my own ASAP. It will help you when you do get into college and it will help in job interviews more than a degree will. A degree will help you land an interview, your talent/experience will land you the job.

...Austin has been up and coming star in the InfoTech world for sure. It's not as cheap as it used to be though...

One place that gets overlooked often is Huntsville, AL. There are lots of defense and aerospace (NASA) related jobs along with the supporting tech jobs. And you're within a few hours of Atlanta, Nashville, and really close to Chattanooga.
SSKs for everyone!

Time for me to make a choice. Hijacking this thread a lil' bit, but I got accepted to the four colleges I applied to.  I have 3 cities to choose from, London (where I am now), Toronto, or Ottawa.  Anyone have some advice?

Of the three, I only have significant experience with Toronto. It takes a certain kind of person to live there, and I'm not it. On the upside, there will always be something fun to do in Toronto, and you'll have access to a lot of good resources, both at school and in the community.

What kind of language? If you mean a programming language, what’s your current level of experience?

Not much at all. I'm pretty much at the beginner phase. And yeah, I mean programming language. Sorry for any confusion.  :))

It very much depends what language you are looking to learn.

If you already know how to program in some language, my advice would be to just start on something you want to do, but using a new language. To get the basics of that language's syntax, just google "C for beginners," or "Java for beginners" or whatever language you're using. In my experience, going from zero knowledge to getting the fundamentals is one of the hardest parts to grasp. A lot of languages have good documentation as well (man pages for C, javadocs for Java, etc.), once you understand them, know what they mean, and know how to use them. Programmer's stack exchange has been a useful resource for me as well.

If you have zero experience, my advice would be to start with a common language, like one of the ones I mentioned above. Oracle has a passable online tutorial for getting started with Java. I took a course at my University that taught me the basics of C.
