Is this a good camera?
« on: Sat, 22 September 2012, 03:06:00 »
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830111462&nm_mc=EMC-EXPRESS092212&cm_mmc=EMC-EXPRESS092212-_-EMC-092212-Index-_-PointShoot-_-30111462-L03B

I've read some reviews and it seems like a good camera but it's starting to get old sooo.....

My main use would be for macro shots n stuff

I wouldn't - sensor is tiny.
Better to pick up a big sensor with smaller zoom with manual controls. Look at the pro compact end of the market and consider 2nd hand to get price down.
Think the canon g series, Nikon p7xxx, could also look at Fuji x10. Olympus xz-1 worth a look too and prices on this will fall with announcement in the last week or so of a replacement model

Good, I was going to buy it a month back when it was that same price. I'm glad I restrained myself.

When I do decide to stop talking photos with my potato I'll ask you guys :D

I use a simple point and shoot Canon Elph 300HS.  I bought it on Black Friday last year for $100 plus a ton of other accessories and gift card.  It isn't a DSLR, but can take some pretty good macro shots under proper lighting.   Here's some more recent shots:

^^ That's what I want, something cheap but still decent macro shots. I think a DSLR would be over kill to take pictures of keyboard 'n stuff

Another option for macro is to get a dslr paired with a $5 reverse ring adapter. This allows you mount the lens on the camera backwards, turning a normal lens into a macro lens.

This can give excellent macro shots even with a cheap camera body and cheap lens. Any old sub-$200 dslr will work fine. However, everything needs to be set manually on the camera. So either you need to know a bit about photography or be willing to spend some time experimenting until you get the hang of it.
