Subject says it all...

Don't burn me for profiling but if you are from India - You don't count in this survey ;-) Because there is more TVS'  sold in India than Big Macs.
What I found strange though is that I never saw a TVS Gold sold outside India.

I am curious about the popularity in India. They could sell tens of thousands and still have an almost nonexistent market share.

What is REALLY popular there?

PS - I have never seen or touched one myself.

Only one.

I've harvested about 5-6 for switches.

In India, CHEAP is popular, at an given point of time, the cheapest option is the most popular.

In mech boards, it is between TVS gold and Razer BW. TVS Gold is popular for it's durability (vs other cheap keyboards), Razer BW is popualr as Razer is the most popular gaming peripherals brand in India and the only one readily available. The QFR is also avaialble, but pople tend to think, why would I pay about the same price for a smaller keyboard, and not backlit too.

LoL - Cannibal !!!

Mine was given to me by a nice fellow outsourcer from a team developing products for us in India. When he gave it to me, I found it so unexpectedly light that I almost hit my forehead with it. This is no IBM M, no risk of KO with a feather light TVS Gold.

I bet the TVS Gold is the only mechanical keyboard in the world that floats.

You probably already know this, BucklingSpring, but MOZ is running a group-buy to get out-of-India folks their own TVS-e gold  -- which you can find in the Group Buy subforum.

I'm getting one, although I bought myself a monoprice (used) for about the same cost ... but that's mine until I get a good 60% board or better yet an ergodox keyboard. The TVS is for my wife who types for a living but doesn't know good keyboards are better than bad keyboards.

TVS Gold is popular for it's durability

So how good does it feel and is it a good value?

I like heavy keyboards, but light weight could easily be considered an advantage.

There was a TVS gold XL, apparently with red switches, listed a couple of times on UK eBay before it sold. So I guess there is at least one in the UK somewhere. sold for £22+post the second time it was listed.

Not that great when you get used to better keyboards. But, it is better than most rubber dome and that is why it is considered "durable" here.

Oh - I didn't notice. But since this board retails for under $40 - you can't go wrong with that. The worst thing about the TVS before its light weight is the amazing amount of flex/wobble you get with the paper thin abs keycaps.

I once made a bad joke about the TVS-e Gold aka Bharat Obama keyboard.

The GOLD makes it super awesome..

I've really wanted this keyboard in the beginning of my keyboard journey... But each sale has eluded me.

The TVS-e Gold was my first mechanical keyboard. It served me well, for the price, but it finally died at the hands of a desoldering iron last week. I'm tempted to buy another one just in case I need more switches in the future.

With about two exceptions, that's why everyone else is participating in MOZ' group buy. Well, that and the quality keycaps (err, inside joke. See the GB thread posted just above)

Hi, new here and I am from India and I own a TVS-e Bharat gold keyboard.

I was wondering why it was so cheap compared to other keyboards when I came across an interesting piece of information (not sure if people here know it).

TVSE and cherry corp (now ZF electronics) have a joint venture and they have a manufacturing plant in Madurai India. That's why the TVSE golds are so inexpensive in India:

Here's the website: http://zftvs.com/

Hope that helps some people make up their mind about this keyboard and the genuineness of the switches...

Hi Hari, where in India are you located? I'm also based in Delhi, just on vacation in Jo'burg right now, it is always good to see a fellow countrymen on this forum. :D

Most people here do know about the ZFE venture, and that the the switches are genuine. However everything else about it is pretty abysmal once you use a better board. Hopefully you get hooked into this money well and buy some more boards :)

Hi Moz, thanks. I am based in Chennai. I would love to get my hands on a used Model M or a Unicomp buckling spring keyboard, but the shipping cost and import would add too much to the base price. At least the shipping makes it double cost.

Is there any place where I can get a Unicomp or a Model M in India?

Not that I know of, I have tried going through the old repair shops in Nehru Place and told some of the large vendors there (SMC International) to stay on the lookout for "old IBM keyboards". Nothing so far.

I was lucky enought to get my hands on a Unicomp PC-122, from Tarzan when a colleague of his was visiting India, excellent price and no shipping. Recently also got a KishSaver thanks to tinlong, it's waiting for me back home when I get back. :)

Thanks... I can wait that long. If it requires additional (local) delivery by post or courier, I can bear that extra cost as well. I the meantime if there are any of my relatives who is likely to return from the US and don't mind carrying the weight, I will ask them too.

I bought my first tvse keyboard in 1999 and it worked all the way through 2004. I bought a few more in that duration as i expanded my office. After 2005, I was in and out of India and hence dint bother much about the tvse keyboards. When I moved back to India in 2011 and set up my office again, I of course chose TVSE. And man, what a disaster. My vendor warned me against tvse keyboards and I dint listen deciding to go my previous experience. Four out of the five I bought in 2011, got sticky, non responsive keys within 12-15 months of use. TVSE of course knows they have ****ty keys so now only gives a one year warranty and doesnt even offer paid service for keyboards out of warranty. Now I am stuck with five ****ty keyboards that dont work and all of them have been replaced with non mechanical ones.

I hate to bump an old thread, but it's the right topic.

I'm about to add one since it's available in Bangalore, but am having second thoughts after reading the last post in this thread.
