Why does quoting certain members freeze this site?
« on: Sun, 25 January 2015, 10:33:40 »
When I reply to a thread, all is well. When I attempt to quote someone's comment, that usually works properly, too.

However, there are certain members, at least a half-dozen of them, who, when I attempt to quote them, freezes the screen with and interminable "Loading .... " message at the top.

What is the cause of this, and why does it pertain only to certain members?

Do you feel the breeze? I don't want anybody going on me. We need every voter. I don't care about you. I just want your vote. I don't care."

It pretty much always happens with jacobolus, nubbinator, intelli78, just off the top of my head.

Never had such problem, even when quoting the mentioned members.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

What does "octagon" mean?

By the way, after suffering with an abominable AT&T DSL line for years, I just changed over to a Comcast cable modem, which seems blindingly fast in comparison. I assumed that the problem would go away with a better connection, but it has not seemed to change.

It's making fun of the :triangle: thing TS does.  azhdar should know better though, it should be :square:.

I wonder what causes that.  I haven't had any issues like that.

People tells me it happens to them when they quote me; enough so that I added a disclaimer in my signature.
Quoting me causes a posting error that you need to ignore.

I think it's when You try to quote too fast.. too quickly after the person just wrote it..

so the serve doesn't know what you're quoting because the post is not in the system yet.

That makes absolutely no sense...

If you can see the post, then it's obviously in the system.

And is this conclusion based on your extensive knowledge of the GH servers and SMF?

A freeze on quoting trolls would be a huge benefit to the forum.

GH's SMF implementation uses AJAX to copy the text from the post you are quoting.

It does this after you click the Quote button.

There is a slight delay whilst your browser sends the AJAX request to the server, then waits for the response.

Once the response is received, the browser places the text in the Quick Reply box with quote tags before and after, sets focus to that control, and then waits for your input.

(At least from my experience writing web applications probably something like this happens.)

If there is anything goes wrong or takes too long during that time, that might result in the delay.

I get this a fair bit, but usually put it down to my relatively poor internet connection.  Usually I need to reload that page and quote again before it will work properly.  Very rarely will it actually quote, even if I leave it waiting for 10 minutes or more.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
