How Do You Walk Past Someone At The Office?

Every time I pass a colleague walking the other direction at work there is one of four reactions:

1. Look straight ahead without even acknowledging the other's existence.
2. Look straight ahead and then suddenly look down at the last second to avoid any chance of eye contact.
3. Look at the other person and then look away as soon as the other starts to glance over for eye contact.
4. Make eye contact and smile, possibly saying "hey". This is also sometimes followed by looking down at the ground as if to give the person a bit of thrust in the direction of walking to make the encounter even more brief.

While I understand that passing people in the hallway is a very frequent thing and niceties get old fast, I can't help but feel a bit slighted when these reactions happen all the time.

How do you react in this situation?

I would prefer if we could all just do 1 all the time.

It’s my preferred option honestly.

I hate it when people say hi at the last second and then I’m awkwardly responding to someone who is no longer there.
Or the “hey how’s it going” “good how about you” “generic response” all while we are walking further apart.

It might be “pleasant” but it’s meaningless, pointless and a waste of breath.


Mostly if I think someone is going to greet me in that scenario, I just pull out my phone and act as if I’m reading an important email.
Sometimes I wear a puzzled face to up the real factor.

I might be a little nuts.

Haha, I'll have to do this if anyone ever talks to me, but I generally have the opposite problem.

I usually just look and smile and say hello the first time. Second time I don't really notice them unless they talk to me. If I'm out of my office it's because something broke somewhere. :D Otherwise I never leave the wizard's basement!

Why is this something that needs conscious effort?

If it is morning: "Good morning!"
If someone is back from vacation or sick leave: "Welcome back!"

Otherwise, you are busy and your coworker is busy. There is no need to say anything.

I work in a small place that is all guys who get along very well.

We give each other hearty morning greetings when someone walks in the door and farewells at the end of the day, but otherwise 80% of the time we make very brief eye contact and keep walking, or 20% of the time make some unbelievably vulgar and outlandish comment or suggestion.
