As an adult parent spend a lot of money on my kids (activities, etc) but I also am old enough and in a more consistent place in life that I also got a car I think is fun and more than just transport. Otherwise a lot of my money goes into “good” food. Meaning fresh fruit and veg along with the “good” cuts of meat like roasts and such.

Maybe Tp4 just lacks imagination, but having played with so much "stuffs" aka "techno-crap". Tp4 understands the depth of most electronic to the extent that, he perceives the pinnacle cost items as little added value to their more average counterparts.

Are you guys buying expensive (better) items, mostly OUTSIDE of tech ?

Yes. I have 2 kids in grade school who are both in activities. I don’t have a whole lot of free time on my hands for hobbies between housework, parenting, and spousal duties. My kid plays on my gaming PC more than I do. So the incentive to “invest” further is limited. However, I gotta eat, so I buy quality food. I am fortunate to have the space and resources to buy a share of a cow or a whole lamb from a local farmer. I also am able to get fresh fruits and vegetables. I also have to drive around so I bought a car that was for fun and function despite it having higher operating costs than my last car.

So I spend my hobby money in other areas of my life where I will find value/enjoyment.

i've mostly moved away from buying tech. i've been looking at/buying clothes a lot lately. absolutely a luxury but really direct influence on how people perceive you/how you wish to be perceived at a surface level. buying good meals is another great way to spend money. shows/concerts, travel.

What are your thoughts on Rtings.com? I used them as a reference when looking for a 3440x1440 high refresh monitor. I ended up with a Dell S3422DWQG. I really enjoy it, I haven't done any color correction or calibration. As far as the casual gaming I do, it's more than fine and when playing RDR2 i'm pushing 75-90 fps in most locations so I am using some of the refresh bandwidth I have.

I don't think you should invest in such an overvalued company like tesla, especially with the cybertruck and other ****ty decisions that are being made by a manchild.

cherry blacks - unlubed - filmed and springswapped with tx 55g mediums - alu Plate | pretty happy with this, the blacks were cherry picked so they weren't that scratchy to begin with, but currently breaking them in, may lube them with a dry lube like ro59 or ptfe powder.

lubed with tribosys 3203 | like topre a lot, prefer it lubed but did make less tactile but that might have been a skill issue. probably will get more tactile over time as the domes age.

bad orange alps lol | definitely needs a restoration. planning on wax boiling them and maybe a replacement pcb because the board has only 2 key rollover apparently.
| praxis
More
gateron yellows - lubed with 205g0 - 62g tx mediums - pc plate | probably my favourite keyboard already, feels super nice and sounds pretty good, it's got a great layout as well. probably gonna build this with mx browns, I feel like it would suit the board more.
| camo filco

stock with silent reds | Pretty cool looking board, the silent reds are actually good, they are smooth and I don't mind the mushiness (it's not even that mushy as well). the layout is pretty weird, but is useable. will probably mod this in the future. maybe a pcb and plate swap, change the keycaps to something dolch like, and also spring swap the springs in the silent reds.

stock, needs a cleaning and probably replacement foam. Do plan to change layout so it has split bs and rs, as well as ansi enter.

Built with new nixies on pc half plate. Love this board already, probably the best looking board I own, those brass accents are so mint. Really like it as is, but I do want to try an alu build (probably with nixies as well) just to experiment with that.

Tsla is worth at least 5x its current stock price given the technologies at its command, for the portfolio, it really depends on whether its subsidiaries are spun off into separate companies with their own stock later on.

If you have millions, it's TSLA all the way since there's very little downside.  but if investment cap is less than millions, there are somewhat more attractive gains possible in semi-conductor, because it has more short term volatility.

I have a buddy who is into Tesla. He maintains they are an energy company fronting as an automotive manufacture. We suspect Tesla will stop making cars and shift to being an OEM supplier for the giants as they already have the contracts with battery manufacturing and materials, plus the RND into EVs that others don't have. Tesla cars are no longer the only EV nor are they the best. I don't see Tesla going anywhere anytime soon.

They already have very mature utility scale technologies, and what they don't have, they can buy from the germans, whereas most other companies can't just easily acquire components for buildout.

You see more and more because you are also seeing used Teslas which are entering the 30k range so people can actually buy them (remember when the Cybertruck was originally supposed to MSRP for 31k for a 2wd and now it's 61k and you can't get it for another year anyways. The only one they are building now is the 100k+ AWD performance model "Beast"). In a not to distant future we will find our first major hurdle with EVs, which is battery replacements. Currently you can spend 5-8k and get a decent ICE car that will get you from point A to point B with little fuss. What does a gadget on wheels that needs a 10k-15k battery replacement (not counting other wear and tear/electronic failures) look like in the second hand market and will anyone want a tesla that only holds 50% battery?

Toyota and Subaru are already making a joint EV effort, V.A.G. is already deep into EV development with the bus and who knows what else, Korea seems to have leaned into the EV market with Ioniq, GM also is investing in EV as well as Ford and Dodge. Going more niche you have the performance division of Volvo (Polestar) going full EV and are set to release their 3rd EV shortly with the Polestar 3. Which will bring more options to the market as well.

I think we missed the Plug in Hybrid step like the Chevy Volt. Give me a 50-80 mile battery pack and a gas/diesel generator for longer trips. I want EV motors but want the range of an ICE car + quick fill ups. My daily commute is like 3 miles there and 3 back so an EV with short range makes sense for me. Living in the midwest I often have to travel hundreds of miles to visit families or get to larger city hubs, etc. I also like to hike so there isn't an option to drive an EV to a state park and plug it in while you hike. Also, mega cold here 5-6 months out of the year so battery performance takes a massive hit.

People have been claiming this for quite a long time.

Tesla is over valued, period.
I do see them exiting cars though, it's too much of a hassle and they have yet to get a good grasp on it (panel gaps anyone?), the cars themselves are junk with a pretty good driveline.

Can they transition to being a supplier, maaaybe.
The big three are TERRIBLE at technology and honestly, they have zero intention of wanting to correct the problem, but they also HAAAAATE having an outsider design or manage their drivelines. I suspect that within the next 20 years, 2 of the big three may be dead along with a few other major manufacturers, Tesla exits the car market and becomes a power company (solar/power walls and superchargers, not drivetrains) and we see several newcomers to the electric car industry that just wipe them out. That and their own dealerships may cause their downfall...

The thing to remember with Tesla as an OEM supplier is that motors are pretty simple and the batteries actually are too. It's literally NOT rocket science. People have been building and rebuilding these types of batteries, motors and charging systems for years. What Tesla really gets right is the software and marketing side.

I think I like this

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Tp4 has never understood the coveting of cars, 99% of the time, people are driving to work, it's a slave-mobile. The carrier of a wasted life. To diminish one's own aspiration for the inane excess of others and societies. Don't be fooled by marketing.

You're describing commuter cars, boring.
Don't get me wrong, boring is good for a commuter it always gets you from A to B without any drama but there's a reason certain cars draw a fanbase even if they're not the most reliable.

Some cars almost have a personality and become like an old friend (or enemy), others are just a way to vent frustrations and forget the day as you row through the gears screaming down the on ramp.

"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Having trouble deciding between 77 inch Samsung or LG oled.

Sams has way better colors, lg has more mature panels and works better during the day (polarizer layer looks darker).

That is where I am at with my spouse. I drive an 08 Subaru Legacy GT Spec.B. I love this, it's the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel. She sees cars as tools to get from A to B. I see them more as physical manifestation of art/passion. Every car company has their own flair and style which makes them unique. The sounds, vibrations, etc illicit emotions I do not feel elsewhere. Rowing through the gears, hearing the engine spin up faster and faster. Even hearing the "chooooo" sound after I let of the throttle when the pressurized air in the turbo system is released to atmosphere makes me smile like a little kid.

Then I drive her car, which gets better mileage, seats 7 comfortably, technically more power, etc. It's boring and a hate it. Engine is attached to a CVT so engine speeds stay around 2k regardless of speed or acceleration (unless you are hard accelerating). It took all the emotion out of the driving experience in the name of "comfort" or whatever.

Honestly, 3/4 of my money goes to food and housing. About as adult as you can get.

Same crap. Can I go back to childhood?

Don't think the 77 inch is big enough.

Sat in front of 1 for a long while today. It's honestly no bigger than a 50 inch tv (fullfield crop) when watching 2.3:1 aspect ratio movies, which is most movies.

Even the 83 inch barely makes any difference. Can't afford 97" oled unfortunately.

After years of refusing to want one, I got an iPad Pro and Apple pencil. It has changed my work flow professionally and it is fun!

The ipads are pretty cool, I borrow my sisters for drawing and it's pretty intuitive with procreate.

cherry blacks - unlubed - filmed and springswapped with tx 55g mediums - alu Plate | pretty happy with this, the blacks were cherry picked so they weren't that scratchy to begin with, but currently breaking them in, may lube them with a dry lube like ro59 or ptfe powder.
| hhkb bt

lubed with tribosys 3203 | like topre a lot, prefer it lubed but did make less tactile but that might have been a skill issue. probably will get more tactile over time as the domes age.

bad orange alps lol | definitely needs a restoration. planning on wax boiling them and maybe a replacement pcb because the board has only 2 key rollover apparently.
| praxis

gateron yellows - lubed with 205g0 - 62g tx mediums - pc plate | probably my favourite keyboard already, feels super nice and sounds pretty good, it's got a great layout as well. probably gonna build this with mx browns, I feel like it would suit the board more.
| camo filco

stock with silent reds | Pretty cool looking board, the silent reds are actually good, they are smooth and I don't mind the mushiness (it's not even that mushy as well). the layout is pretty weird, but is useable. will probably mod this in the future. maybe a pcb and plate swap, change the keycaps to something dolch like, and also spring swap the springs in the silent reds.

stock, needs a cleaning and probably replacement foam.

Why does anyone need to know kanji, just marry chinese wife. Then she can part time for the CIA decrypting CCTV 1 news.
