Buy, Buy, Buy (Americans)
« on: Sun, 10 November 2024, 14:57:21 »
Not only is it November and Black Friday deals a plenty, with Trump winning the presidency and his plans for tariffs, you need to buy what you can NOW! He's stated a 20-300% tariff on Chinese goods which means many of the things we use, especially electronics are going to go through the roof on price. And if you think he won't do it, he did 25% last time just on electronics and people freaked.

BUT TARIFFS ARE PAID BY THE CHINESE!
No matter who pays it initially (the importer does), if you have to pay a 20% tax to import something, you're going to charge the end person an extra 20% to cover it or you won't be in business long. So regardless, your price will go up to match. A 100% tariff means the your keyboard, switches, GPU, motherboard, RAM, SSDs, power supplies, cases, lower end key caps, mice, Xbox, Playstations, etc. are all going to go up by that amount over the current price. This will also have an effect on the used market.

Other things to go up but not as much, clothes/shoes, cell phones, food, pet food, tools, TVs, furniture, refrigerators, washer/dryers, farm equipment, gardening, pots, pans, glasses, silverware, etc,  pretty much everything really because almost everything now has something in it coming from China and those parts will go up. Services that rely on all of this will also go up, I.T., auto repair, farming, restaurants, etc...

This isn't the win some people think it is.
Tariffs are meant to promote domestic production, not penalize. No one wins a trade war especially the end users.

Tp4 scratching his head on whether he'll actually follow through with this.

It's enough of a price rise to cause riots.

Families living close to the line are already paycheck to paycheck, if this goes through, they'll just have to Steal Playstations, it'll be impossible to buy them.

I didn't want to risk it, ordered a new computer on credit yesterday.

20% on something cheap, meh. 100% on something nearly $2k? Yeah, I'm not risking it.
Besides, we know 5000 Series Nvidia is going up in price and there's some, decent deals going on for the first time in years. You can probably get some of the best deals in the last few years and probably the best you will get for the next few years as well.

What type of computer did you get?

Tp4 has like 60 computers. Not sure he needs another one. Might consider 9800x3d chip.

I still don't get how Trump could misunderstand how tariffs work so bad, and no one has corrected him at this point. Every time he talks about tariffs it seems like he thinks they work the opposite of how they actually do.
It's like him saying "I love drinking battery acid!" as his stomach melts into goo and everyone around him claps like "Very good Mr. Trump, battery acid. Yes."

He didn't misunderstand.  Reality doesn't matter when the average american voter is exceptionally ignorant.

how Trump could misunderstand how tariffs work

He doesn't care how tariffs work, he just spews out words that make the rubes think that it sounds like he is "sticking it to the man"

If any member of the working class understood "Reagan-omics" they would not have voted for any Republican politician during the past 45 years.

Off-topic, but another one of the absurdities (this one astounds me the most) is how a very sizable portion of the Muslim community felt compelled to "punish the Democrats" for not helping the Palestinians enough - by not voting for Harris. Yeah, boy, that will work out just peachy.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

What type of computer did you get?

I'm replacing everything but my SSDs, just waiting on ram and the case to arrive.
Thought about the 9800x3d but was more than I wanted to spend (several hundred dollars more and more power than I need) but also they're hard to get, even the 7800x3d is not in stock everywhere.

new rig:
AMD 7800x3d
MSI B650 Mortar MATX motherboard
XFX Radeon 7900 XT
Corsair 32GB ram
Corsair 850 watt PSU (certified to work with the board/cpu combo)
Lian Li A3 MATX case, wood version
Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 CPU cooler

I also grabbed a 2.5gbit switch so I can upgrade my network, I had 2.5gbit before but it was a direct connection to and from the server and running dual nics tends to cause some delay at boot while they sort themselves out, this will fix it and make the network less complex.

It was an expensive weekend to say the least.

It's pointless to question him, he'll just deflect or say you're nasty for even doing so.

Never question dear leader!

He doesn't care how tariffs work, he just spews out words that make the rubes think that it sounds like he is "sticking it to the man"
Some believe him, others know he's lying they just don't care.
It's wrestling to them, they just want to win and as long as he's sticking it to the right people or sticking to everyone worse than them they're happy. They could be living in a van down by the river but as long as you're in a tent it's ok.

Nothing new, I just wasn't willing to shell out what they have wanted for new cards and my 8700k/1070 has served me quite well.

I'll prob expand my internal hdds and get a 2TB external to hold all my movies for Black Friday this year.

I always go for the Samsung EVO and T series (870 and T9 respectively). They always work for me, never failed, and have good r/w speeds. Is there much of a point to looking into other brands? I feel like ssd brands have kinda homogenized.

SSDs haven't sped up for a while now. Random i/o is what it is. Intel crosspoint is the peak SSD.

On 78x3d, disable fast boot, disable memory context restore.  For whatever reason, this platform requires the motherboard to initiate ram retraining on every boot for maximum stability. Enable Expo settings, Set the primary timings manually, you can leave the secondary/tertiary on auto.

This should save you alot of headache. It takes ~15-30 seconds to retrain depending on motherboard.

Do this before you even install windows.

Which ram sticks did you get.

Strange, this board doesn't have a Fast Boot setting and actually needs memory context restore set to on (default is auto) to avoid retraining, which on this system was only about 10 seconds.

Slight correction, I got Gskill Ripjaw M5 memory (I would have sworn it was Corsair, DDR5-6000 CL36, not super fast but decent. My primary concern was compatibility with the system.

It'll depend on the board. If it's crashing inexplicably, very often, on the b650, it's something to do with memory training.

ON = stable,  OFF = inexplicable random crashes.  It might boot to windows, you use it for 10 mins, then crash.

You WANT the training for more stability.

No one knows why, because if you check the timings, they haven't changed since the last boot even without retraining.
