Proper Anime Video Settings.
« on: Fri, 16 October 2026, 11:39:58 »
MPCHC (year 2020) + Madvr is still the quintessential, light weight, most performant video player/scalar.

Beloved VLC ;D is convenient, but there is a massive image quality gap.

This is not trivial "sharpening"

SuperRes filter, post upscaling step, downscales the image back to original resolution, checks for errors, compensates, Repeat 4 times.

Madvr also renders in higher bitdepth + dithers with error diffusion, preserving pristine gradients.

In succinct terms, the Combo brings out every bit of Detail, GRAIN, Softness, Shadow, Color Ramp.

It's like watching anime for the 1st time.

But WHY is GRAIN important. You don't watch 1 video frame, you watch 24 frames a second.

So, if you evaluate a SINGLE frame, you might consider grain "noisy", but when you watch all 24frames in 1 second, the GRAIN Elevates TEMPORAL resolution, giving you a higher resolution perceptual experience.

The 24 frames of grain, also SOFTENS the hard edges themselves such that you don't really feel like it's too stiff.

Tp4 has included his detailed settings, There's no wrong way to set it up, but this is just to get started.

AI NGU upscaling is also available, it's very sharp, but this does in fact add artifacts that're not in the video data itself. (Not recommended by Tp4, ontop of massive power consumption.)

One can also use Madvr to deliberately produce a "soft" look like VLC, it's up to you, you'd still get the advantage of Madvr's dithering which is Top notch and validated by instrument measurements, Even professionals in the field use madvr tonepatch generator to calibrate certain PC oriented equipment.

The dithering is a big deal, it gives you 10bit+ lvl performance even if you output 8bit from an 8bit source.

GPU requirements, at least a gtx 1050 for SDR, 1060 for HDR.

You can get Madvr from https://www.videohelp.com/software/madVR

Download the base 0.92.17, then download the latest test build same page, and extract the test build files directly into the 0.92.17 folder, then run install.bat as admin.

Once you install MPChc, you will also need to install Lav filter.

Set lav filter video decoding to dx11
Set mpchc to use Madvr renderer in the options menu under output>directshow video>madvr
