How can you like blues?
« on: Tue, 20 March 2012, 14:28:15 »
Just got my blues, thinking I would love them.

In short I didn't, the noise is way too high pitched (not what it sounded like when I tried them out in pcworld) and they are a little too heavy and 'jarring' for my liking.

BROWNS FTW!

I have very big hands and I like a keyboard that can handle powerful finger strokes; one that is unashamedly loud and bumps back on your finger with great vigor. The high-pitched sound reminds me of the cute and nostalgic clicking of lego pieces. I considered browns for a while before recognizing that preference of mine. I would probably try Alps next.

I have never trier other MX switches, but I have used a buckling spring keyboard for several years. I think I still prefer buckling spring, but my Noppoo Choc Mini with blues is an excellent companion on the road.

I find that keyboard feel can be difficult to judge properly unless the keyboard is at about the right height for typing.

I am not too happy about the click noise either, but I find the tactile feel to be superior.

I thought you were missing a word from your title.

Anywho, try out some O-rings on them, I found that they silenced the highest sounds some amount.

I only use blues for work because of heavy typing and to annoy my Co workers.

The click clack cadence is very pleasing. I compare it to the sound of flesh smacking during sex. It lets me know that I'm putting in work.

I use browns at home for gaming. Any time I have to type anything in game the thud sound breaks my heart a little bit.

I jumped for blues after not really enjoying typing on reds (I was bottoming out way too much for it to be enjoyable). I think after having blues for a while I am much more adept with the reds. I think blues can grow on people the clicking however well that probably won't.

As for the sounding different it just has to do a lot with the surroundings, anyway the click certainly is nice feedback for typing.

But if you aren't happy perhaps you should return or sell the board..

Blues are a great example of modern day mechanical switch. They're tactile and loud. They have personality and arguably the most iconic of all cherry switches. Who knows if that's because they're in so many big manufactured boards (CM Storms, DAS, etc)

What other shape rings are there? It's like "4 am in the morning", as opposed to 4 am in the afternoon.

I'm really hit and miss about both the sound and feel of blues. Sometimes they're as much typing on air as browns, other times they're stiff and jarring like XM. Same keyboard.

Finding good sound and good feel in the same keyboard is hard. Dell AT102W has a pretty good "serious" sound, but the switches are a bit rubbish. Fukka clicky switches have a great feel, but they wake the dead.

Blue Cherries? Hm .....

40a o-rings on blues just dampen the bottoming out and cause a tiny bit more resistance (but also only truly felt when you bottom out).

Still have plenty of that lovable click!

IBM Model M is the winner EVERY TIME. I'd take a Model M over ANY Cherry based board, every single time. AT102W is a close second to the IBM, but as I am typing on the only replica there is of a genuine IBM - the Unicomp, I have to tell you nothing compares to PROPER keyboards, made in the good old fashioned bombproof way, with PROPER loud, tactile feedback.

They're not called the best keyboard for nothing. The older devices are better because they weren't attempting to be sleek or hipster or "geek chic", or any of that pretentious drivel - they were built WELL, to do a job WELL, and to survive WELL. As fashion (supposedly) moves forward, common sense and well thought-out design principles move backward. Machines used to built to survive and do something to the best that they could, because the designers were PROPER engineers, and the companies that hired them were extremely proud and very serious indeed about building a product that lasted, not half-distracted on the next badly thought out, flimsy junk they will be producing next year, whilst still half way through the current design process.

You often hear the age old phrase "quality is more important than quantity"; sorry, have companies suddenly lost all interest in their reputation? Marketing means nothing, when your flimsy disposable junk belies the sales hype & empty promises you push at people.

They say that computers are "advancing"... show me an example, it's an illusion.

I hope you don't include the IBM Personal Computer family in here. Great keyboards, but pathetic computers. IBM were already cost cutting on keyboards by the Model M, but a Model F less cost cutting is still good. The original Macintosh was pretty awful too, albeit very understandably (at least they tried; IBM opted for DOS, which must be one of the all-time lows of the IT industry), but Apple rectified the hardware bigtime with the Macintosh II. IBM's best effort was identical mouse and keyboard connectors that weren't interchangeable. I thought I'd killed someone's PS/2 until I realised I'd plugged the keyboard into the wrong socket; the BIOS had rewarded me with a meaningless number and an unbootable computer. (If the plug fits, it should work, dammit!)

Acorn on the other hand … Hell, it's Acorn that gave us the ARM CPU that everything mobile now runs on.

I've only tried Browns and I'm having trouble deciding between Blues or Browns for my Filco. Also, I wonder if I'd miss a numpad having a tenkeyless. Does this mean that you'll be keeping your Filco with Browns or is it still for sale? But anyway, as others have said it's personal preference really. Wish I could afford to buy both at the same time. :/

Nope, not at all.

Now, I need to decide if I get the browns or blues. Geekhack really doesn't help, because it's just one thread where everyone goes "wtf is wrong with you, blues are the best" and then another where everyone says browns are the best thing since sliced bread.

Well, I got my first brown board today. Its funny, you can feel the tactile part, but its very much less tactile feel than blues, perhaps partly due to the noise. I couldnt decide, so I had to buy one of each and lets just say, this brown board aint gonna gather dust in the corner for a while. Me likey.

Nope, not at all.

Now, I need to decide if I get the browns or blues. Geekhack really doesn't help, because it's just one thread where everyone goes "wtf is wrong with you, blues are the best" and then another where everyone says browns are the best thing since sliced bread.

I might just get browns because I've used them and liked them, but part of me thinks "WHAT IF BLUES REALLY ARE PERFECT"

:/

Let me put it like this, blues don't feel the way they sound like on paper. The small difference in weight is actually very noticeable - at least for me. Also the tactility gives a 'jarring' effect, when typing (again IMHO). I find this OK when typing in short bursts for a few minutes, but any longer and it becomes uncomfortable. Also I find the browns brilliant for gaming, I play team fortress 2, css and other fps titles often. I find the browns especially useful when double jumping as the scout - I can ride the tactile bump to time my jump perfectly.

In my opinion, I would stick with browns and then see if you can find a way to try out blues for a decent period of time (Another error I made... I tested out the switches at my local pcworld, thought I liked them... And obviously after ordering I didn't...).

Finally something worth noting is the noise, I thought I wouldn't care as stuff like that doesn't usually bother me. But the blues did, they are just so high pitched that they interfere with anything you're doing.

It's all a matter of opinion, but if you're happy with one board, I would recommend sticking with that until you get a chance to buy/try out the other :)

As well as this these analogies being thrown around about blues being the manlier switch or whatever you guys are insinuating, are just ridiculous. If I were to put it into an analogy, the blues would be like the training wheels (stabilisers) on a bike, then once you can use the bike without these (i.e. the sound and the heavy tactility) you can type just as fast, but you're hands don't get destroyed in the process :D Browns are called 'ergonomic switches' by cherry for a reason.
