Just tried a Topre switch (hhkb), thinking I would love them.

In short I didn't, the feel is mooshy.

They're lyke the yacht of rubber dome keyboards. Don't understand the expensive ass price tag.

Anywho, try out some O-rings on them, I found that they decreased the highest mushyness some amount.

Believe me, I can. I however would rather buy 2 Filcos. One to use. The other to place under my ass so when I fart in my chair I can hear the beloved pinging sound.

This thread is a joke toward the "I hate X switch threads", but I really don't like Topre :p

I do love the HHKB layout though..

PS: Just bought a poker with browns to see if I like the layout, I feel like I'm playing roulette.

Op, I didn't like my first topre board until I made it my daily driver and I settled into it. They are good switches but I personally think they are highly overrated. I'm currently using a hhkb and Im hoping they get better because these are meh compared to the realforce I had. But I remember reading that itlstln said they'd eventually break in.

This is a silly question really. It's a matter of preference and price justification is up to the user... It's like going up to a regular keyboard user and having them say to you how could you like mechanical keyboards? because trust me there are a ton of people out there who wouldn't pay more then $20 for a keyboard.

Anyway, by saying you "tried" topre switches how long did you get to use them for? People tend to say there is a 2-4 week break in time. For me, I liked them as soon as I got them. I've tried every cherry switch except clears and blacks and topres feel nothing like the rest. There's a solid amount of feedback, has just the right amount of travel time, and is weight at 45g uniform which is similar to the red that I love. What's not to like about topre? For me, anyway.

I spoke with him recently and he seems to maintain the opinion that the overall feel of the HHKB topre switches feels abit stiffer/lackluster compared to the Realforce.

Maybe I should try out a Realforce to see if it really feels superior to the HHKB topre switch heh.

I think he said it was due to the plate mount.

Personally, after I got over my buyers remorse I did enjoy the realforce (and it felt better than the hhkb).  But I like clicky blues more so it stayed in the closet for awhile before I sold it.

Buy used if you can't justify the price. Mine cost $20 more than my filco with browns, and it was worth that extra 20 to say the least.

There has been a lot of talk concerning the feel of Topre switches lately and this mildly concerns me. I have wanted a HHKB ever since I first discovered mechanical boards, but the price was too high for me at the time. Anyways I finally came across a really good deal on one last week and its on the way. I have always liked brown and red switches so I think I really enjoy the Topre switches. I fully plan on making this my daily driver for a couple weeks before I make any judgements, but for as long as I have been wanting this the damn thing better be awesome because my expectations are high!

They are overpriced, but worth it because it is the only way to get the best switch.

How long did you use the HHKB for? General consensus is can take up to a month of use to really notice the Topre difference; that was my experience getting a 86UB. MX Blues are nice too, but you notice the difference immediately due to the clicky tactile feedback, so it's perhaps not fair to compare it to Topre based on short-term use? I'm very happy with Topre – part of it is the switches, but a big part is the build quality and the surface of the key caps. Are Topre switches of better quality than Cherry ones? I would say yes. But are Topre switches $200 better than Cherry switches? Hell no. I paid just over $200 for my board (in barely used condition); I would never have considered paying $300+ for one.

I like my Topre boards, despite small problems. I own two HHKBs(one used for 5 years and one is in like new condition). I have not tried Realforce yet, but I would like to try it someday.

I haven't used Cherry long enough to find its problems I couldn't avoid, but Cherry boards are nice too.

They are different boards. I like them both for different reasons. If you could afford many keyboards, I would recommend trying them all.

I did just the opposite.  My first Topre switch was the all 55g and I LOVED it.  I decided to try out the all 45g, and was thoroughly underwhelmed.  The 45g feels like it has 1/10th of the tactility of the 55g.  Maybe not that little, but it is a huge difference.  If I had purchased the 45g first, I don't think I would have spent any more money on another Topre keyboard because it just doesn't justify the price tag for me.  The 55g however was worth every penny!

LOL I forget the exact number because I had been drinking when I measured it, but I think it was about 75g or 80g on the ripometer.  I'm sober now, but sadly I don't have a bunch of nickels right now.  It is heavy, but as long as you don't have little girl fingers it won't be too bad, and you will be rewarded by amazing tactility and oneness with cup rubber.

Though I'm ambivalent about the switches on top of my 87U, I'm quite fond of the switch on the bottom that lets me put Ctrl next to A.  I wish other manufacturers would offer the same feature.

Yeah, Realforce stuff looks nice. But the layout on the HHKB is just uh ... so ... awkward ...
At first I thought it was some dev oriented keyboard, but then I realized that ... no ... Page Up page down, end of line, start of line are just like ... not present :D And no room for them around the arrow keys ...

I officially petition to rename them Toppre Harley, because you'd have to be a real Zucker with money to buy all those.

Bonus points if they're British, since that's how they misspell anything ending in "er".

You still have all the Page Up/Down Home End keys in a function layer. That's more than what modern day compact keyboards have (Apple Wireless Keyboard). Also, the layout has been around for a while, mimicked after various Sun terminal keyboard.

In my opinion, loving the HHKB layout comes down to a slight learning curve for as about as compact of a layout as I can get. Once you've adjusted to the layout, there is no "Dang, this layout is strange". It really is well thought-out. You can arrow around with one hand. You can reach your del/bs combos with one hand. There aren't any keys placed at the far edges of the board that require your fingers to strain to reach them. Commonly used keys like Esc and Backspace/Del are brought closer to the home row. All while keeping the functionality of a full tenkeyless board. The biggest sticking point is the price tag, and it will always be a legitimate complaint when there are Pokers and Pures with just as compact of a layout at a third of the cost.

The switches are purely subjective. Some people like it. Some people sold themselves on it. Some people want something more mechanical, and less rubber dome'y.

The sound of a topre switch hitting bottom is a thocking sound of the plunger hitting rubber. Most of the sound comes from the rebound, when the top of the plunger smacks against the inside of the top housing. So they don't really operate/silence like Cherries do. The Type S is really just a foam ring around the base of the plunger, so that when it rebounds and goes to smack against the top of the inside of the housing, it's dampened. I'd totally do a DIY Type S if there was some more information about it (I think only one person has ever done it)
