If You're looking for back lit, ducky's the only game in town with decent quality. Their newer iterations are good, but their older models are crappy quality.

Like Filco ? No.
Ducky is really cheap. Like tp4tissue said new keyboards are quite good but older models weren't really good. But sure, they're cheap.
There are brands and good keyboards between Ducky and Filco. :)

If you want red backlit with brown swithces cooler master offers the storm trigger. The cooler master boards are very high quality and cheaper than filco or ducky.

+1

Though if you're outside of North America, there are other switch models available for the Trigger.  Is Ducky really the only other high quality option for backlit keyboards?  What about Deck, KBT, and KeyCool?

ARE ducky keyboards high quality.

In our country we speak and write the English language.

I hadn't realized the Internet at large was localized entirely inside the U.S. of A. Grow up.

They speak English in other places besides just the U.S....

Anyway, Ducky quality, on the cheaper models at least, is not very good. Mine (1008XM) had many issues and only lasted a short time. Never had one of the expensive ones, but word is that they're somewhat better.

My previous keyboard was a Logitech Illuminated keyboard with "PerfectStroke" scissor switches with white LED backlight. I like it, but it has rollover issues with gaming, so I wanted to replace it with a mechanical of some type. I use my PC mainly for gaming, but I'll occasionally use it for productivity too. So I wanted Cherry MX Brown switches as a compromise. I also have a thing for white LEDs. My PC case has a black & white color scheme (Special Edition Corsair 600T), with white LEDs. I have a few Macs, and those all use white LEDs. The only manufacturer I could find that offered a mechanical keyboard with White LED backlight was the Ducky Shine K9008S.

Build quality wise, I have no complaints whatsoever. To my eyes & fingers, it's equivalent to my Leopold FC500RC/AB (except with MX Blues). The USB cable strain relief is exactly the same. Both use Cherry stabilizers, if I remember correctly. It doesn't see heavy use, so the keycaps still look new. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't remember the LED settings, so I always have to turn them on when I boot/reboot the PC. Other than that, the build quality is on-par with the Leopold.

I also have a Ducky DK1008 with Green ALPS. I like that switch a lot...VERY clicky and very tactile. The problem is, it's also very wobbly. And the rest of the build quality is average at best. It's not the worst I've seen (ie Cherry), but it's not very good either. The keys shined up very quickly, and the lettering was gold/brown to begin with. For the price though...probably a good enough board to start on. If you end up hating it, you aren't out much money.

Now, my dream keyboard (for home use) would be Tenkeyless, Complicated ALPS (sounds like Matias might be cooking up the closest equilivent), White LED. If Ducky would release a tenkeyless version of the shine, I'd be pretty happy with that.

I know about the Ducky YotD edition...I should have been more specific. Tenkeyless with White LED :) Yellow LED would look like ass with my setup. Hoping there will be a Shine II tenkeyless with all the switch & LED options.

It's definitely one of the cooler backlit boards because it has that star-trek function where the light follows your fingers.

Still, my main gripe with Ducky has always been the cherry style stabilizers. Once you get used to costar, the cherry type makes you go bleeech... wiffle wiffle

@battet: Welcome to Geekhack!

@furosuto81: Welcome to Geekhack!

I have two Ducky Shines, and no complaints to so far, although the up arrow on the second one does not click all the time, even though the key does work.

Ducky is one of the few, if not the only, manufacturer that makes keyboards with most Cherry MX switch types (at least the more common ones) and a range of different backlighting colours (including yellow and pink/purple).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Filco = Japanese/Taiwanese

Take a guess.

Ducky = Made in Taiwan
Filco = Made in Taiwan

Edit / note: Not implying these two brands are identical.  They have different specs.  But they are both 'Made in Taiwan'.  In fact, several years ago, Ducky and Filco were both made by the same ODM - Costar.

So, back to the original question: "is duckys is, are is duckys aint high quality ?"

Quality is a relative term - 'high quality' compared to what?

There are instances were rarity and uber-popular color schemes / switch layouts etc. may raise the price, but for the most part (other than overpaying for some 'brand names'), price is your indicator.  You get what you pay for.

A big part of the reason you haven't received many 'direct' answers to your question is that Ducky is one of very few Mechanical Keyboard brands to have several different 'levels' of 'quality'.  You will notice that with each level, the price goes up (proving the point above).

DK9### Pro ($129) > DK9### ($124) > DK1### ($85) > DK1###XM ($59)  -- prices are approximate  (just proving the point)

Find a Ducky you like, find another mech board at the same price point and see how they stack up against one another.  You should be able to determine any brands 'relative quality' from there.

I think for backlit keyboard, Ducky is one of the better ones.  However at the current moment seems like costar is coming up with backlit keyboards so I'd hold off till I see the new models coming out from WASD Keybaords, Thermaltake, Rosewill, and potentially Das or Filco later on
