[just an idea] 3d printing and CM Quickfire rapid case
« on: Fri, 21 September 2012, 14:49:09 »
1.  has anybody tried 3d printing cases using online services such as http://www.shapeways.com/  Seems like you could do steal, ceramic, etc.. would prob end up being $150-$200 a case, but could do lots of awesome custom stuff?
2.  Why are there no CM quickfire rapid cases out there.. anybody working on one?

Cad files that's why. As much as I'd like to a say that gh is an open community cad files are worth a lot since it takes a lot of time to make them. Factor in that you can produce cases and make profit off of them is another reason not to share

hmm.. thats kinda lame.. we should start a community financed CAD project - people pledge into a fund, first person to bring usable CAD files to the group gets the $$ (and the people who have pledged get the files?

It's lame but if you're going to stick 30+ hours designing a case, it's hard to do it for free. I know MKC is selling the CAD file for his case, but it's $1200.

See what I mean about expensive CAD drawings. I have see home build 3d laser scanners built for under $100 that could be used to scan the inside of a case to drastically reduce drawing time

I think you guys have some misconceptions about the Makerbots.

The stuff they print out SUCKS ASSS.... they take a huge amount of tweaking just to look like sh1t. And if you actually want something remotely precise, you basically have to sand the blob that gets printed and sculpt details yourself.

This only refers to the makerbot,

If you have one of those German Professional Printers, those really are freaking amazing.

I've contributed more than 30 hours to open source software.  Way more.  Orders of magnitude.   Didn't get paid for that.

This.  Basically the only thing the makerbot is good for is making cheap little toys.

This is certainly not true. The QFR's center standoff is moved to accommodate the USB inlet. I can post pictures again if you like.
