Ergo Clears
« on: Mon, 01 October 2012, 22:27:50 »
I am interested in converting my new Filco Tenkeyless MJ2 Ninja with Reds to Ergo Clears (coming from buckling springs has me missing the tactile click) Is soldering required?  I've never soldered anything.  Could someone point me to a guide?  I've seen a video on someone popping out stems but it says they must be pcb mounted to do it that way and I've read my keyboard is plate mounted.  Which tenkeyless keyboards are pcb mounted?I've tried pming a member that offers this conversion service but I have yet to get a reply.

Soldering is required. For me it's not really the soldering part that's a pain, it's the desoldering.
The only way you can switch them without desoldering is if the switches are PCB mounted. I don't know of any tenkeyless that are PCB mounted. : (

BTW, if you're looking for a tactile click, clears aren't what you want. clears have no click, only a bump.

You'll need to first desolder every switch off, do the ergo-clear mod, then solder everything back.

It's not so bad, if you use soldering wick// braid... this is incredibly important in efficient de-soldering.

If you just want to make the typing area into ergo clear, you don't have to remove every switch. This can save time.

Also, a solder sucker works wonders better than braid. Since you have to heat the board longer when using braid, you have a higher chance of lifting a trace. Either way works though. :)

I haven't used wicks, only suckers. They work ok, but sometimes it leaves a bit of solder in the hole and you have to work pretty quick

Ok, guys, is there an "automatic one" since all of these are manual?

I have near unlimited funds when it comes to tool purchases..

Hakko 808

Or if you *really* mean unlimited, look at either Hakko or Weller rework stations.
