Will I enjoy a RealForce?
« on: Mon, 07 January 2013, 14:25:20 »
My favorite switches are Blues and I enjoy bottoming out.  I definitely prefer Blacks over Reds.  Realforce is a very expensive brand of keyboards and I dunno how I could try them out other than just buying them.  Do you guys think I will love these keys based on what I just said or  is that just to little of an description to know.  Is there a way to find out if Topre keys are for me?

Do you like the sound?  If you're heavy handed and like the sound, Model M's are great for that.  I like the my Realforce 45g uniform, as it's closer to a HHKB feel.  I don't like the variable weight RF that I have, it just doesn't suit me.  If you're heavy handed, look at the 55g weighted key.

edit:  Will you enjoy Topre?  Do you like typing on boobies?  I do.  I like typing on boobies a lot!

Or keep an eye on the $10 Topre keychain IC which will get you a Topre switch mounted on a small plate.  At least that would give you an idea of what a Topre key feels like.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I believe I am heavy handed.  I like to smash my keys when I type.  I enjoy the sound of the keycaps and louder the better for me.  I will look into the Model M but I believe they are fairly big in terms of the size.  I would like a smaller keyboard, also I'm looking for a tenkeyless.l

Apparently Amazon sells RF keyboard.  I think I'm going to order it and try it out after I read their return policy and confirm their return policy.  I do this a lot of gaming mouses.  I have order roughly around 8 mouses that I have gave a test drive and returned.  Man why the **** do I have such an expensive hobby.  Ever since I picked up Starcraft 2 I started to collect mouses and keyboards and everything that comes along with that, keycaps, mouse pads, mouse feet etc.... Such a money sink but I enjoy it..... :-X

Hah, I know exactly what you mean!  My obsession started with starcraft as well.  I've gone through  5 different mice, and I now have like 7 keyboards, all because of that game!  Lol, well that's where it all started at  least.  I now really like this hobby!

Hi there, if you are using KB for playing games i think Model M is not suit for it.
i got a Model M but not using it for playing games and only use it for typing. you will get addicted to it if you are heavy handed.

you might consider buying a used Realforce here on the forums and if you don't like it you can sell if for about what you bought it for. You really won't know unless you've tried it especially if you're very picky. I personally like Topre more than anything else but I only play Tower Defense mods in SC2.

As to the off topic discussion of model Ms. I only own a Unicomp and I do not recall seeing any actual early 90's or 80's IBM manufactured boards so if you're getting an older board this might not be the case. Realforce boards are the best quality boards I've ever seen. If you were to cut one it would bleed quality. Unicomp boards are the worst I've ever seen. This is not to say they're unreliable but the plastic they use looks terrible, it doesn't fit together well, the molds look like they've been patched when they've removed features. You can see the ghosts of the old features or features that aren't on the specific board you have. There are more issues but the short is that its not well made and I dislike them for their apparent wholesale lack of attention to detail. It's like nobody there actually knows how to make keyboards they just know how to run the machinery that's been passed down from company to company.

You will be able to but even standard Realforces won't retain the (IMO) ridiculous prices EK sells them for.

Bust out a Rubber dome keyboard...

Type for 10 minutes...

If you like it..  Buy a topre..

If you do not like it.. Stick with Cherry mx.

RUBBER DOME = Topre.... if anyone tells you different.. they're just trying to justify that they've gotten something "more" out of the $300 they just spent....

There is nothing WRONG with spending $300 on topre, it's a good keyboard... but don't sit there and make crap up like it's NOT rubber dome.

First off.... You should NOT do this.. buy the keychain, it's more ethical...

Second... Amazon is NOT the seller... the seller does not have the lenient return policy that Amazon has.

Topre keyboards are definitely rubber domes.

Lawn mowers share engine technology with race cars.

The implementation of a technology makes all the difference.

My point still stands... If you like lawn mowers, you'll certainly like cars...

But don't expect the car to do something crazy like fly... it won't....

Well, I'm gonna hijack your thread here for a moment if you don't mind, OP, since I have a similar question.

How do Topre feels compared to MX Browns? I have a Browns and a Blues board and while I love the crispiness of Blues, I find Browns a bit on the mushy side and perhaps not light enough for me. I love light switches.

So here I am, in love with the way the RealForce 87u beige looks, but conflicted if it's the right choice for me and if I should go after Reds like I originally planned.

The decision between the variable weight and the 45g version is also tough. I can only order from keyboardco but they only carry the 87u beige with variable weight, and I have the feeling the uniform 45g might be nicer.

I would love to have some insight about these two questions.

uniform is better, especially if you ever plan to customize your layout a bit.. for example my "y" key is  my "0" key. and my "enter" key is my "back space" key.

MX brown feels like a gritty unsmooth mx-red.

Topre feels exactly like standard rubber dome, except the key press is less wobbly and the travel is often smoother from all angles due to the thicker shapely round shaft.

The closest comparison I've read (note: I have yet to try either) is that MX Ergo Clears (more pronounced tactile bump than Browns, with a Brown spring) are "closest" to Topres relative to all other MX switches, but even then it's a long shot. Depressing a membrane bubble produces a much different force gradient than a spring.

ah... MX is very dissimilar to topre because the bump is in the middle, while the bump on the topre is at the tippy top

I guess.... if you're typing VERY fast... then it could feel similar...  but the "resistance" curve is very different...

The reason I asked about Browns and Topres is because from the youtube videos I've seen, Topre sounds very similar to my Browns plate mounted board. For some reason the bottoming out low pitch sound they make gives me the impression they're stiffer and mushier than they should, specially when compared to MX Reds.

I know Topres are basically nicer rubberdomes, my I'm really afraid to spend $300 and realize they feel way too much like a standard rubberdome and regret the decision. As I said, I'm the kind of person who loves the crispiness of MX Blues, for example. Also, returning the board is not an option for me.

Good thing about the uniform thing, though. I already sent keyboardco an email asking about a 45g uniform version of the 87u. If they can't put them back in stock in time they'll make my choice easier and I'll get the Filco with Reds.

um... I wouldn't say topre sounds much like cherry mx at all, because topre has a distinct low frequency "THOCK-THOCK" sound.. where MX bottom out sound is more like "TACK-TACK"

dude if topres were that similar to rubber domes do you think all of us who use  and love our topres still would? probably not (not counting the HHKB fad that seems to have waned a bit).

topre is nothing like any MX switch at all, get that out of your head or you're just going to be disappointed. there is no comparison outside of the fact that both switches are used to signal keypresses to your computer; that's where the similarities end.

I'm not saying topre is bad... but you can't deny that a HUGE part of the psychology of "LIKING" something expensive and corner market, is the fact that you put up big coins for it...

I'm merely pointing out that the similarity between rubber dome and topre is overwhelming, and so people won't go in with unreasonable expectations...

As I've come out, rather disappointed.... When I actually started to "use" the keyboard, and the novelty wore off, I was overcome with regret. luckily the internet is a fast sell.

this is only my experience, but i vastly prefer my realforce 87u to either of the kmacs i have owned (KMAC LE and Kmini), and i think it boils down entirely to the switch feel. i don't disagree with you that exclusivity can play a big part for some people, but it's not a rule. sorry you got swindled by novelty :P

That's what I fear, people overselling it. And what you meant has a name and is a known psychological effect.

Thanks everyone for the answers, I guess I'll just let the faith decide for me: if keyboardco comes with the 87u uniform 45g in beige, I'll get it. Otherwise it's Filco with Reds.

That's what I fear, people overselling it. And what you meant has a name and is a known psychological effect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-purchase_rationalization

Thanks everyone for the answers, I guess I'll just let the faith decide for me: if keyboardco comes with the 87u uniform 45g in beige, I'll get it. Otherwise it's Filco with Reds.

I've used Stockholm syndrome and effort justification to describe it, but people don't like wiki stuff.. they like plain read.

stockholm syndrome would imply that you owned the board and it psychologically abused you to the point that you like it :P

and i knew someone would say something like that... no the kmac is not for sale... yet ;)

After buying and selling $3000 worth of keyboards over the course of the past 2 years, I can say that my preference for Topre is based solely on the keyboard and switch itself, since the cost of an individual board is negligible when compared to how much I've actually spent.

Topre's might not be for some people, regardless of how much they cost. For others (like me), they're the best money can buy. They'd be the best if they were half the price of a Filco.

It is pretty irrelevant that they're mainly rubber dome...you say that as if it were inferior to Cherry MX switches...which they're not.

I didn't put up big money for my Topre board..and I think it is great.  I like my Cherry boards too...They're just different. I certainly can see the appeal for Topre switches...do I think they're a bit overpriced?  Yes..but then again you see a bunch of people buying custom boards or other things for their boards that can well exceed the price of a good Topre board.  Heck, some people are buying Dye Subbed PBT keycaps for their cherry mx boards and it ends up costing them the same as if they just bought a Topre board...so who paid too much?

I will say, I'm not a fan of Topre boards for gaming but they are very nice to type on...leagues better than any normal rubber dome.....as enjoyable if not more so than any cherry switch...

Here's the question I wrestle with...

Do you enjoy the Topre out of "familiarity".. or because it's truly exceptional

For example... Asians eat alot of rice.... Eventually they only have good things to say about rice...

Most people grow up on Rubber domes.. Topre is an upwards "extension" of that.

So... this may leads to a "homely" feeling on Topre, because it is so reminiscent of the "good ol' days".

to what degree is your disdain for the hubris of topre valid? entirely for your intents and purposes; much as the enjoyment of topre is entirely valid to those who enjoy it.
i'm not sure how much can be gained from theorizing the sources of one's keyboard preference... but i am game to waste some time at work.
it just appears that you are presenting an oppositional viewpoint and then later stating that your view is not as assertive as you earlier implied, and that's boring.

i "like" my topre more "than" cocaine. are you implying that severe cocaine addicts are more justified in their preference for cocaine than topre users are in their preference for a keyboard?

I'm implying that cocaine is the epitome of happiness... and this is quite true, only slightly less than direct electro-stimulation of the pleasure centers of the brain.

But the topre Keyboard.... there's far greater a variance on "acceptance"... the corners would be very thin.. thus any overwhelmingly positive accounts should be further examined.

And seriously, I'm guessing you haven't tried cocaine...  :))

topre is more like heroin, as a matter of fact. actual fact. soft, muted, peaceful.
i think cocaine would be more associated with MX blue - you know, high pitched sound, sharp tactility, completely ****ing obnoxious to everybody that doesn't like it.

and btw i'm guessing you've never tried meth, because your teeth look niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

I did NOT say they're inferior.. though I've voiced my personal distaste.... the fact that you chose to read my statement that way shows you're defending you perception more than anything else...

You've voiced your personal distaste..in fact you've gone out of your way to express it..and you're NOT saying they're inferior?   You mean your emphasis that they're "just rubber dome" and the fact that you show obvious distaste for them does NOT suggest that you think they're inferior?  That's funny...Let's put this another way, do you think your comments suggest they're just as good as Cherry MX switches?

I have no need to defend my perception of them...The amount I spent on my Topre board allows me to sell it and double my money..so certainly I have no buying decision to defend.  Also, my opinions about X switch are purely based on my own personal likes/dislikes.  Other people's opinion about a particular product or switch have no influence on my own  personal perception.  Obviously if it is a product I have not used or experienced myself, other opinions might play a part..but  once I use them myself, what anyone else thinks is absolutely irrelevant.   And certainly I have no reason to defend Topres..I think they're good but I'm not saying they're the best buy or they're the best...My post doesn't suggest that nor have I ever suggested that.
