I'm forced to use a crappy rubberdome at work. Tempted to bring my topre to work, but the school's IT policy is a bit rough.

My school uses those Lenovos...they're TERRIBLE

Tempted to pack my Leopold, but I'm afraid of losing it (almost forgot my laptop once) and/or it getting stolen :( (I also don't have anything else to use at home when I get there...)

It's funny because most people don't seem to have any clue how expensive my keyboards are. Any thief probably resides here on geekhack :D.

My work has a strict IT policy, but what I did was ask permission until somebody said yes in writing that I could bring my own devices. I also explained the benefits of ergonomic devices. Now I have that permission in writing and I can reference that email anytime somebody might comment. Here's the thing about IT: they probably despise their job as much as the next person, so they most likely will not bring down the hammer if they see you using your Leopold.

Currently at work. One PC is using a Noppoo Choc Mini (Red) and the other is using a Membrane from 10 years ago.

I cringe whenever I'm at school. I can't stand rubber domes any more because they're so mushy under my fingers (I personally don't like Topre that much either because of the little bit of mushiness I can feel because of the rubber dome in it).

Some scissor switch keyboard I can deal with and can actually make me type faster. The shorter travel distance until I bottom out helps me a bit just in case I bottom out by accident.

After using mechanical boards (blue switches) for just a few weeks, I don't HATE rubber domes (per say), but I do notice how not nice they feel all of a sudden.  I guess it's only a matter of time...

My teenage daughter has one of those. She loves it because "it is white"

It is a truly horrible board, even worse than the "Apple Design Keyboard" - which is at least worth buying out of a junk pile for a dollar for the nice Alps-compatible PBT caps.

JESUSSSSS buy her a white keycap white base mechanical
Are you trying to make your daughter finger less? :P
there is no better way to make your teenage offspring think your hobby is lame than to try to get them into it.

Well regarding my work's IT policy, any type of peripheral could potentially be a keylogger or unverified storage on the network that could collect, steal, macro functions. PSU strips can do this even, along with mouse and keyboard+usb stuffs. Its funny cause, our department isn't exactly needing rigorous policies as much due to our location as the IT HQ is in the same building. Seemingly more ironic, i'm not even doing anything related IT in the building so I get to endure the wrath of the overzealous nerds enforced to the building plebs.

sth - exactly right

However, I did get out a nice clean AEK2 and set it up on her desk, without a word. Since it doesn't click, and has a little rainbow Apple on it, she may take to it. Those dampened creams are OK, if a bit heavy.
"Starting in 2011, the deficits again started to shrink. During Obama’s term  the deficit was reduced by $900 Billion  before finally in 2015 the GOP managed to wrangle a “reconciliation” bill out of Obama where he again cut corporate taxes, as well as made permanent some of George W. Bush’s original tax cuts. This is the year everything reversed. Before this, under Clinton, Bush and Obama the deficit in almost every year was gradually decreasing. The balance we had of taxes and the economy was bringing the deficit down, the money coming in was slowly catching up with the money going out until 2015. Trump’s subsequent tax cut has continued the new trend even after the rest of Bush’s cuts have since expired. Obama had an average GDP of 2.3%, with 11.6 million jobs created and unemployment peaking at 10% in 2009, then falling to 4.3% in 2016. If we had continued on that downward deficit track, we would have again reached balance and another surplus in 2017-2018.

Hover between the two so in the future you won't feel tempted to replace the keyboards you use at work and such with mechanical ones. :P MUST NOT SPEND MORE MONEY!

Same here...or when I still had a job anyway.   We were not allowed to attach 'any foreign devices' to our PCs.  It was more to do with keeping all of computers uniform with standardized equipment.  So if you were to call up tech support with any issues, or your computer suddenly broke, there would be no fingers to be pointed.

We also had the no USB device rule since it was a government agency but I couldn't explain my way out of having my Noppoo Choc at work as hard as I tried.  If I ever get a typing-heavy job again I'm celebrating with another keyboard purchased specifically for use in the office.

I've been using mechanical keyboards regularly for over a year (first a Razer Black Widow with MX Blues and now a WASD custom with MX Browns) and it surprises me just how stiff and unyielding a rubber dome feels in comparison.  It just doesn't make for a pleasant typing experience.  I could never go back to using rubber domes every day.

Whenever I have to type on a rubber dome board again (usually for a family member or client), its like stepping through the Twilight Zone into this alternate weird dimension where all the things that could go wrong did!

Hehe, seriously though, after any significant time on mechs, its *very* hard to appreciate the dome.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Did it again today.  Forgot my mechanical board at home.  Had to use the company provided Dell rubber dome.

The horror!

I'll be recovering for the next week.

Sometimes I need to help a coworker and go at his desk and sometimes, rarely at least, I need to use his keyboard else it would be too long to tell him what to do.

The pain. I hit the keys, then double watch what I just entered since the signal that my fingers sends to my brain is: Error, feedback from keyboard is corrupted. Plz contact your administrator and tell him your keyboard is broken.

Then I go back to my desktop, use my keyboard, and enjoy the feeling of money well invested!

This is all in your head... guys..

The difference is NOT so radical between dome vs cherry mx..

and between topre and dome, there's virtually no difference at all.

Even with my beloved Egdx, the only difference that's notable is LONG term usage. where the regular flat keyboards give me shoulder and wrist pain..

Ya'll xaggeratin'

More than anything, I think the build quality and metal plates make the biggest difference.  Switches are just a nice bonus.

Bottoming out is painful at times. The times when I'm forced to use the Apple Aluminium keyboard and alikes. I don't mind soft, light rubber domes, but nothing beats linear Cherry MX switches in this regard.

I like bottoming out :)

I have one normal rubber dome that I still make use of and that's the logitech dinovo edge keyboard. Pretty well built keyboard and it's bluetooth and has a little track pad on the bottom right so it's perfect as a lounge media pc keyboard. Not an entirely terrible typing experience either. Lasted over 5 years so far as well.

i really like high quality rubber domes.
that said, when i go help a colleague, i have to type on their logitech k120. domes far from perfect, very slippery caps surface, no stabilization, awful experience. and also their caps lock keys usually act like caps lock, which is also awful.
