Went back to a cheap rubber dome for a day
« on: Thu, 14 February 2013, 16:07:41 »
I went back to using a cheap rubber dome for a day here at work. It's been a reminder of the terrible old days. I lived a spoiled life with these mechnical keyboards.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

Even a good rubber dome is bad.

I keep a few around, just because, but it is not a pleasant experience to actually use one.
"Starting in 2011, the deficits again started to shrink. During Obama’s term  the deficit was reduced by $900 Billion  before finally in 2015 the GOP managed to wrangle a “reconciliation” bill out of Obama where he again cut corporate taxes, as well as made permanent some of George W. Bush’s original tax cuts. This is the year everything reversed. Before this, under Clinton, Bush and Obama the deficit in almost every year was gradually decreasing. The balance we had of taxes and the economy was bringing the deficit down, the money coming in was slowly catching up with the money going out until 2015. Trump’s subsequent tax cut has continued the new trend even after the rest of Bush’s cuts have since expired. Obama had an average GDP of 2.3%, with 11.6 million jobs created and unemployment peaking at 10% in 2009, then falling to 4.3% in 2016. If we had continued on that downward deficit track, we would have again reached balance and another surplus in 2017-2018.

My WPM actually slows down at school, and I am unsure if it's the domes or my selfconscious fingers.

I busted it out to remind myself of why I refuse to use them anymore these days.

I think rubber domes are just fine.

Nothing wrong with rubber domes whatsoever...

I honestly like my "cheapo" rubber dome more than my topre, when I had it..

Because it's lighter,, around 30g, VERY VERY thin domes...  :D

They aren't that bad.

I use the rubber dome keyboard when I get pissed at the browns I keep at work.

Higher quality rubber dome keyboards such as the non-buckling spring IBMs are surprisingly good. I use one at work that I found in the closet.

I have to use the crappiest HP keyboard c. 2011 production ever at work (wouldn't dream of bringing in a mechanical keyboard with liquids always around). Flattest profile, almost like a chicklet. Typing on the edges rotates the keys. I mistype horrifically.

We do have a few older rubberdome keyboards around which are more tolerable. And my old 12-year-old Dell RD isn't bad either.

on a less dramatic note, there are significant differences between the tactile feedback on various rubberdomes at work. anything with black plastic is guaranteed to suck more :P

My teenage daughter has one of those. She loves it because "it is white"

It is a truly horrible board, even worse than the "Apple Design Keyboard" - which is at least worth buying out of a junk pile for a dollar for the nice Alps-compatible PBT caps.

Some of the NMB had very good RD switches. They made keyboards for a LOT of companies
They also had a very good mechanical switch - The mythical "Space Invader"

The original Dell Quiet Keys (not the ones made in China) and the IBM (what is it? 8393 or something like that) are my favorite rubber domes. Also, in the late 1990s-early-2000s Compaq made several really nice rubber domes.

Also, in the late 1990s-early-2000s Compaq made several really nice rubber domes.

Those were made by NMB - Got a bunch of them NIB for $5 each at a warehouse sale. I just peeked at the storage box where I use to keep them. It seams that I gave them all except one. Thought I had more left.

Rootwyrm, you don't have a teenage daughter, I suppose?

Since I haven't killed myself or been arrested for murder, I most definitely do not.
Yeah, I have enough friends with kids. No thanks.

Sadly I forgot my Poker at home this morning, of course in a rush to meet my ride since my car is broken... having to use piece of sh!t HP domes that is office property.  It has that nasty plastic over stale gummy bears feeling. It is so horrid I almost would prefer to use the on screen keyboard with the mouse.

I get the Ergo 4k out every now and then, the layout is wonderful, but the domes are atrocious and actually make my fingers hurt after some time.
Sometimes I might get the G15 out, that's still a decent typing experience for a rubberdome, I don't think I'd mind using it more if it wasn't for it's monstrous size.

I have to go through this everyday before I got my hands on my current Ducky Shine. Tried it once using it at work, never turned back. Planning on getting a hhkb for its compact design to bring around the country.

I used to use my leopold at my internship but gave up on blue switches for a bit and now I can't type on them anymore. I did take my rosewill to the office for a bit but I rather use it at home.

So now I use this cheap lenovo keyboard that is bigger then my rosewill and I also tried this cheap thin keyboard that has some really nice amber lights for caps lock and such.

The lenovo keyboard

And the cheap thin thing... I stopped using it after my success rate with some of the keys was god awful. I wish I had a better picture.. but the keyboard in question is in my cubicle's storage area right now.

Long story short. Once I get the spare money. I'm buying a tenkeyless brown switch for home and taking my Rosewill back to the office... after I replace the keycaps... they are so shiny...
