THE BEST MECHANICAL KEYBOARD?
« on: Tue, 23 April 2013, 21:28:08 »
Hey GHers!

So I know that there are many, many mechanical keyboard manufacturers out there. From occationally roaming GH during lecture times, I can name two brands, namely Filco and Ducky. I myself own a Ducky Shine 1 with blue switches, and I love it love it love it! I'm thinking of getting a secondary keyboard for home use, so I don't have to bring my keyboard with me everytime I fly back home to Hong Kong (I study in the US).

Does it really matter whcih brand I buy from? I absolutely love ducky keyboards, and I would buy a year of the snake keyboard, but those things are expensive. I've been browsing around, and I see that cooler master also sell mechanical keyboards, and the CM storm trigger seems significantly cheaper. What other brands are there? I love doing research on this kind of junk, and I wouldn't mind roaming around for a while. I see that Filco doesn't have its own website, unfortunately, so can anyone tell me the models it produces? A quick search yields a few results, but I can't find this specific keyboard from feng's facebook page, which looks very very nice.

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=402780016456783&set=a.401224169945701.88829.399118603489591&type=1&theater

does anyone know what that keyboard is called?

I've been looking at the following:
ducky
filco
coolermaster
das (maybe?)

are there any others? i know of the razer keyboard but i don't like razer in general, their emphasis on "gaming" is too nerdy for my tastes.

GL getting that case.

Just get what you like.  The only one I would recommend against is Das because it is glossy and has no resale value here.

EDIT: You can find Filco's on NCIX, Ducky's too I think.

Customs aside, I love my KBTalking Pro because it is solid like a filco, and works wireless on every OS/Device.  Love the built in shortcuts too.

Don't forget about WASD.

The best mechanical keyboard will be the custom one you build for yourself.

You don't build WASD's though.

GH60 or KMAC yes.

Thanks. The das keyboards seem very expensive for what its worth - its just a solid mechanical keyboard. do you have any idea what the model image i posted up is? it looks so good :c

If you're looking for a full sized board, another option might be the Corsair K70 which is now fully mechanical (MX red), backlit, with 20 key rollover and an aluminum top housing. I can't speak to the build quality, as I've never owned one. The price seems to be $130 which is reasonable given the features.

Full sized boards generally have lower resale value around here, as most GH members prefer tenkeyless.

Good luck with your research and let us know what you find!

I didn't mean to imply that you do. WASD should be alongside ducky, filco, coolermaster, and das.

Oh I completely misread you.

Also I wouldn't suggest the K70.  Too gimmicky, incompatible with custom keycaps, I guess if your into that stuff then whatever.

I only suggest kb's which have some resale value here, so in the future if you become a keyboard addict and want to buy expensive Korean customs or keycaps, then you can sell your old board.

Ducky is probably the most consistent keyb manufacturer around. They do the best backlighting and when their full lineup of thick PBT keycap boards come out, it will be hard to justify a Filco unless you are a weirdo and have problems with Cherry stabs.

I'm with jabar. I'd get a Ducky for all the reasons he's posted. I've owned a few and can stand by it.

It's pretty decent if you are not bound by tax,

BUT make sure you have the desk space.. it's a BIG keyboard. scary big.

Definitely do NOT buy the K70..

I was lab-ratted by Corsair, and they f.. me on both k60 and K90..

Definitely way for the early adopters to chime in first on the K70 before going in.

they ran it over so slowly.. i doubt the keyboard would take any Speed Run Overs.

Not only did they run it over slowly, they placed some sort of padding under it.  If you put enough padding under a person, you could run them over with a tank without harm.  Also it appeared that some keys did not work during the truck test.  There is a reason why comments are disabled on the video lol.

there is no way the Cherry switches themselves could hold together through a speed run over. I can see it now; the keycaps and broken Cherry switch parts flying out behind the wheel as it runs over the keyboard.

IMO the HHKB is the best keyboard out there, my second favourite is the Noppoo Choc Mini

Like said in my introduction my favourite mechanical keyboard is a simple KBC Poker. before it gets the first place I have to purchase an aluminium case and find the 30% doubleshots that are still missing to be completed. then it has all I expect from a keyboard.

HHKB pro looks nice but I can't judge it because I never felt Topre switches. my main priority is gaming although I don't play that much and from the description I can imagine that they don't fit that good to me

Buy whichever you like best, each has their pros and cons.

Filco is a very solid, yet plain design, but over priced.
Ducky has great build quality and good lights  (I'm told)
Cooler Master is an insane value.
Das... While it may not hold resale value here, the Costar built ones are good, if overpriced and don't mind glossy.

Personally, unless you are on a strict budget, I would say ignore the cost. On an item you will interact with for years, is it really worth fretting over $30? You can spend that seeing a crappy 2 hour movie. Buy what you want the most.

thanks for everyone's replies. what is the kbc poker? i cant seem to find a website for them , is it a complete keyboard or a diy bundle? it sounds interesting but i can only see post-modded ones, so idk what it actually looks like.
