Hello, need help with a new keyboard :D
« on: Wed, 29 May 2013, 00:23:44 »
I want a new keyboard since i am with the same ****ty rubber dome keyboard for 5 years already :/ so i don't really care about the money unless its like super high the type of keyboard i need is for FPS gaming ( Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Counter Strike: Source/global offensive, Team Fortress 2 and a few more games..), also i like to blind type but i am not a professional typer i type less the 100 WPM maybe i will start typing seriously soon but i prefer a gaming keyboard please help me find one, by the way i kinda care about the look of the keyboard not seriously matters but just that it wont be really ugly looking.
Thanks for helping, have a nice day!  :)

It really does come down to preference. I wouldn't recommend Blacks as they are a bit stiff for gaming. Red, Browns (slight tactile) or Clears (medium tactile) are my top choices. Blues work OK as well as long as the high pitched clicking doesn't bother you (I never had issues with double tapping).

Blacks are good for gaming in that they spring back to position quicker.

But if you need to hold keys down for a while, you might experience finger fatigue after a while.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

It would also help if you could let us know what country you are in - some countries have less or different options available.

it's inevitable... sooner or later you either land the kmac or an ergodox.

Might as well fly on the get-go... it's just m0re cheaper this way...

Fair enough.  One thing to consider is return policy - if you end up with a defective keyboard (rare, but it does happen) you might have trouble returning it once you get home.

If you can test it while still in USA, that would be a good idea.

Mx Red would be a good choice for you. It's the lightest switch too, some say stupid light but I don't have the honor to try it yet mi'lord. Well you have to buy another board again (it's inevitable).  :))

Without a numpad the mouse and keyboard are closer together. It's a matter of comfort and scale.

MX Red or Browns will be your best bet unless you want to drop some big bux for a Topre (which are both comfortable and much quieter than MX switches).

It's more of What do we have AGAINST keyboards in general..

Ergonomic is very important today, as we've become inseparable from our PCs

The standard 104 key layout, even the 87key tkl are RELICS in terms of usability.

Overnight our usage habits has greatly exceeded the staggered layouts' limited comfort.

We now have the Ergodox which is leaps and bounds ahead of the all current iterations of text input devices in comfort.

So what's the point in continuing the inefficient layout..  Well, if you're already old, and have only a few years left, it doesn't make sense to invest time into adjusting to a more comfortable layout..

I'm only slightly saddened by the fact that the ergodox doesn't fit my hand perfectly, my thumb naturally falls between the two thumb buttons..  I can cope with it, but If only that part were "adjustable"

I am not sure if this has been posted, although I am hoping someone else has posted this and I am just repeating it. Your choice of switches are PERSONAL PREFERENCE. I have used reds, blacks, blues, and browns, and i HATE reds and blacks, the linear switch feels terrible to me. My friend owns a keyboard with blacks, and he loves it. Your switch will not effect how well you play a game, I don't care what people say about linear switches being better for fps's, they have just bought the hype. I have played multiple games at a fairly high level (fps's, rts's, and mmos) and i prefer my browns over reds and blacks any day. Please don't just get a board with reds or blacks because they are "better for gaming", because they really aren't. Go try some switches out, or do what I did and buy multiple boards and sell them. Most boards have great resale value, and you can normally sell a used board for what you bought it for (just sold my leopold for 5$ more than what I bought it for haha).

I find reds to be the absolute perfect switch for FPS games specifically because of how quickly they respond when strafing and moving, and how little your fingers get fatigued from pressing the space bar ten thousand times. Others like MOBA or RTS games are a little less forgiving on miss-pressed keys. This is one of the reasons why I keep 2 boards on my desktop at all times.

Coolermaster QuickFire Rapid is extremely high quality, almost on par with filco, and only $75, but no back-lights, and maybe no macros, not sure.
The Ducky Shine II is another very high quality board for $128, with either pink(they call it purple, but its really pink), white, green, red, or blue LEDs. Again, not sure about macros.

Which keyboard is good +got MX Red + Lights + macros + TKL?

I don't think there is a single keyboard in existence with TKL layout and Macro keys as they both defeat the objective of each other.

If you're not bothered about TKL, the Corsair K95 seems to be ideal for you http://www.corsair.com/k95/

Honestly I'd go with the Ducky Shine II TKL, because you'll find yourself using macros extremely little it most situations. I can't actually think of one situation where macros were exceedingly beneficial.

It has backlighting.  And really it is not that much more expensive than something similar without backlighting.

The QFR is a bit cheaper than other keyboards, a few people have wondered about that, especially given its relatively high quality (typing this on a QFR right now, with my Ducky sitting next to me).

But if you add the price for the LEDs, the extra circuitry to make them work, the extra work to make backlight-friendly keycaps, the keyboard-specialist name Ducky (as opposed to CoolerMaste, who I had never associated with keyboards before I found geekhack), and each little bit adds up to make the difference.

Sort of.

Not quite the same thing - QFR has no backlighting, which is the main difference.

Apparently there will be Ducky Zero TKL at some stage.

Well I don't know. There has been a number of recommendations in this thread. Ducky Shine IIs are recommended for backlighting because they have the most LED options and 6 display modes plus brightness levels. Why are they more expensive than a backlit CM board? Options and a quality OEM, NKRO and DIP switches.

Why isn't TKL + macros common? It makes no sense to have a truncated keyboard then be expanded by macro keys which won't be natively supported by all operating systems.

If you're cost conscious, then get one of the CM keyboards. They are quality and you will get a lot of use out of them. Your options are limited with CM, but you can't have your cake and eat it too unless you pony up.
