I got a Woodchuck? problem...
« on: Sun, 11 August 2013, 10:49:25 »
It's kind of big, I estimate 18 inches not counting the tail.  It's eating up my garden, tomatoes, pumpkin, cucumber, squash, wintermelon.

A big enough (effective) trap would cost me almost $90 at the store.

I thought I might as well get a BB gun?

Could the plastic pellet kind stop a woodchuck?  I'm pretty sure the metal pellet kind are illegal in my state of NJ. So I can't buy those..

The most powerful pistol I see is the wingun 1911 @ 500fps.  I figure I could get .43g bbs and that should help increase the stopping power.

BB's wouldnt kill it, they may go through the skin from point blank, but probably not through the muscle enough to kill it. Metal BB's may do the job, aslong as you get them in the same size at 500fps. Although a good smacking with a 15$ shovel would get you the same result.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

Then just put some food out with sleeping pills, and drive it a fair distance away and dump it.

Call a guy tp4!

I did, it was more than $90 :))

because the woodchuck doesn't stay in the yard, he comes and goes, so the guy has to charge more.

Well it's not like it's going to fall asleep right there on the spot so you can catch it.

Well it's not like it's going to fall asleep right there on the spot so you can catch it.

the problem is I need to give it a high dose, because I can't be watching this thing 24/7, So I need a good 4-5 hour window where it passes out.

But How the hell would i know how much to give it, "without" killing it of course.

And also I don't even think it would eat that much of sleeping pills even if i tried..

Ugh...

i've attempted to catch it..

threw a brick at it - fail - it matrixes that sh17 like nothing.

my vote would be to call the local Humane Society or Animal Control or what ever you have in your area.  If they are no help I would just get a .22 caliber pistol and get some sub sonic rounds.  They are very quiet unless you are right in town.  I wouldn't worry about killing it.  They aren't endangered or anything like that.  Just make sure you check to see if there is a season on them or not.  If there is and it is out of season then that would be considered poaching.  Which I have an issue with unless the meat would be going in your freezer to be eaten.

You should buy the trap, catch it, then organize woodchuck races and get back the money for the cage from the race fees!

A well placed shot with a .22 would be neither cruel or unreasonable if it is causing damage to your property.
