MX Red vs Black issue!
« on: Mon, 19 August 2013, 05:51:12 »
Another thread by me!

But no, seriously, this is an issue that's been stuck in my head for far too long and I need your help!

A bit background - I've tried Blacks, Reds, Browns, Blues and clicking on a single Clear switch. From what I've found is that the Browns and Blues are no-go for me, since I feel the browns to be too annoyingly scratchy and the blues just annoys me with the sound. The Clear switch has this tacticle bump but I'm not sure that tacticle switches are something for me (other than Alps and rubber domes, if you now can call them tactile).

Anyway, I'm now torn between MX Blacks and Reds. I've been typing both on two different Steelseriers 6GV2 boards and I can already say that I prefer the MX Blacks over the reds BUT, BIG BIG BUT! I'm a very accustomed Lenovo X220 typist that uses some sort of scissor switch and so here's the deal - I can't choose between MX Blacks and Reds because I believe that if I choose the Reds I'll adapt quickly to them and no longer will want nor need to type on a heavier switch like the Blacks, however my FIRST impression between the Blacks and Reds were that the Blacks feel better. Do you have to follow your first impression when you choose switches or is it something you learn to love from typing?

As a reference, I love typing on my Lenovo X220 I have at home but here at work I'm currently typing on a Dell Latitude E5430 which feels like silk to my fingers.

I'm sorry for being so unclear but this is the best I can explain my situation. If you've got any questions do ask!

Thanks in advance!

Buy either one.. and put them in an ergodox.

If you don't like the black,  just buy the lighter 60gram springs off originativeco sherry's website for $8 and switch out the stock springs.  and you'll have an identical RED switch except for the color of the stem..

You don't have to choose... you can have both, and switch back and forth all you like.

But,, only with an ergodox, which happens to be the most advanced greatest comfortable jesus-approved keyboard out there. :D

Get both.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Damn I should definitly do that! But can you really change the springs/switches after you've soldered them on the board? Won't it be too much of a hassle?

NO,  it is really easy.  I timed myself.. bout 15 minutes

again, only possible on the ERGODOX.

I preferred Reds due to their lighter actuation force. Nothing fatigues your fingers like typing on heavy keys!

Alternatively go for something like a Quickfire Rapid with the switch you think you'll prefer to save burning a large hole in your pocket on something you're not sure of!

red > blacks. i'm mainly a gamer and with blacks, my fingers were fatigued relatively quickly while gaming, especially my little finger used for holding down shift (for sprinting in FPS games and such). i've tried all switch types. red are by far my most favorite.

It's personal preference? Just get what you want? And I don't really understand what scissor switches have to do with reds. The correlation doesn't make any sense to me. Regardless, I prefer Blacks over Reds. Reds are far too light for me.

Vintage blacks are VERY slightly lighter and smoother than regular blacks. I honestly don't think its worth hunting them down. If you can get them? Great. If you can't get them? No problem. I think Blacks are lovely lubed so just get any Blacks you can get and then lube them.

The scissor switches was just to give you a "feel" of the situation I am in :P

But you're saying I should go with the first impression - preference?

So you don't have a mechanical keyboard right now? I don't really understand what situation you're in other than you're typing on scissor switches. Those feel nothing like any MX switches. Are you trying to ask which switches feel the same in actuation or travel or sound as compared to scissor switches?

And you should stop asking for anyone else's opinion and just trust your own. You know what you like so you should just get what you like. If you decide later you'd like something else, then you learn something new and you can continue on in trying to find a new keyboard.

Nope, no mechanical keyboard atm! And never had any either - just been trying at the stores.

I'm not asking which switch feels like what, I already know how the switches feel. My point is that I'm unsure if MX Black switches are the right choice for me in the way that maybe I'll type better and faster on MX Red if I buy one instead of I go with the MX Black, and I want to see if someone in the community has been in the same place as me.

I can no doubt buy one and sell one later but that's not what I want. As a poor student I can only afford one keyboard and that's what I'm aiming for - for now. So my first mechanical keyboard has to be "special" in the way that I'll like it and adapt to it, which is why I'm concerned if MX Black really is my choice.

And the whole comparison with scissor switches is to show people what I type on, to see if MX Black really will be a great choice since I'm used to the scissor switches and don't get fatigued from typing on them.

See, so the more details you provide us, the more helpful we can be.

I don't have a problem typing for extended periods of time on MX Black. For a frame of reference, my daily drivers have Greens, Whites, and Blues. Because I don't have any fatigue issues with heavier switches, I'd highly recommend Blacks. If you think you'll get tired/fatigued/they're too heavy, then get Reds or modify the Blacks to like 65g Blacks.

Lmao I'm confused myself, which is why I need to be challenged in order to find necessary information in my brain junkyard!  :p

I doubt I'd get fatigued using MX Blacks, I tried them and I did like them. But I don't want to bottom out and I didn't really like the o-ring mods so I thought about some way of typing on MX Reds where you kinda "bounce" on them? So they go down to the actuation point and then bounce back but your finger is already gone before it comes back up? Or am I just imagining things now?

Yes you can learn to not bottom out while typing. Doesn't matter which switch it is.
