I like the yellow, but those eyes
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Pay all this money for the sexy brushed aluminum look Apple hangs their hat on, then cover it with $5 stickers. Seems super counter-intuitive to me.

dont really need one most of the time for the air, it's one of the Haswell processor ones. runs pretty darn cool most of the time, that's until i started using final cut pro 7 on it, haha so i figured an external fan would be a good idea  :thumb:

Windows RT tablets are way cooler - you can rap dance on a table in a business meeting if you have one of those.

they're not gaming machines for sure.
They are shiny pieces of plastic which contain parts worth 300 bucks, but sell for $1k+.
So gud.

But people do buy them.

And then a year or two later all the other manufacturers come out with something almost exactly the same.
Not trying to offend the OP, but whenever I see anyone with a Mac I could just /facepalm so hard.
It is the worst buy anyone could make, unless you are a movie maker and need the software.

Or you want a Unix-based operating system with a nice GUI that Just Works :)

I must admit that I do have a separate Windows PC for gaming, although that is even older than my current Mac (which, itself, is due for an update).

I've wrestled with miscellaneous hardware and Windows for years - it is such a breath of fresh air to use the Mac.

You should use linux! No, really. I installed Ubuntu(so not even superlightweight) on a laptop that could run minecraft at abt. ~10 fps on tiny. Now it runs at ~30 fps on far. Sometime I want to get around to getting steam for linux on there.

Minecraft is not bleeding edge graphics, but it is written in Java and takes a huge chunk of system resources to run.

I tried GNU/Linux as a desktop operating system (about a dozen different distros) and settled on CentOS 6.x, but I only use that for dev purposes at work.

GNU/Linux is still a bunch of different software written by different people trying to work together.  There are always apps that look, feel and operate differently, kinda like on Windows.  At least on Mac all apps look and work basically the same.

But ... on Mac sometimes I miss the ability to customise the desktop a bit more.

if you haven't yet, try a kde based distro like Kubuntu or Netrunner (also hear good things about opensuse but i use deb distros out of habit). i actually ran kubuntu at work for about a year and i'm using netrunner now (just cause it was time to reinstall and felt like  mixing things up). as long as you can stick to Qt apps (and/or get the kde integration stuff for firefox) things stay looking pretty much the same across the board, and Qt/KDE/Plasma  etc blow GTK out of the water IMO. there aren't as many themes but there are some really good looking setups (like Caledonia, and even default Oxygen is pretty good).

Although slightly off-topic, I used to prefer KDE, particularly on a larger distro like OpenSuSE.  That was back in the days when GNOME was incoherent and IMHO unusable.  Then GNOME significantly improved, so I switched to Ubuntu and used that.  Now Ubuntu is losing the plot, Unity is crapping all over desktops, and I use Mac, Windows 7 and CentOS on various machines.  I still have a couple of older Ubuntu-based servers, but they are likely to be switched to CentOS on the next major upgrade.

Anyone tried running GNU/Linux on a pimped out MacBook Air?

KDE has been pretty awesome since 4.6 or so, and significantly better still since 4.10. 4.11 is super slick!

I haven't tried KDE yet. I'll put that on my todo list. I've only used Unity(ok, but not the best),XFCE(I just haven't bothered doing much with), and Ratpoison(AWESOME. I'm not much for all that eyecandy. It assures me that all my computer is doing is running my apps, and not the DE.)

I did try KDE recently (kubuntu, I think) and it is better than Unity and far more consistent across applications.  But I am happy at the moment with Gnome 2 on CentOS 6.4 (for development purposes in a VM).
