Please Help! Razer Blackwidow Keys Malfunctioning
« on: Mon, 30 September 2013, 09:56:40 »
Hello, this is my first post on geekhack. I don't know if this is the place to post this kind of thread but I couldn't find a help zone or something so I am posting it here. I need some help with my Razer Blackwidow. I thought the best place to post this message was geekhack.

Anyways, getting into the problem:

I bought a Razer Blackwidow 2 months ago and it was functioning perfectly until today. I got out from shower with my hair wet and sat in front of my computer. Then, 3-4 drops of water fell down from my hair and got on the keyboard. I immediately picked up a tissue to clean it but while I was cleaning it the computer started doing crazy things. Several applications launched just by themselves and there was a crazy scene on my computer. The computer was selecting different shortcuts from my desktop for like 10-20 times just in a second. Clearly some of the keys got stuck for some reason but what I don't understand is that the other half of the keyboard (the half that didn't get the water drops) seems stuck too. After cleaning the key caps and whats inside it calmed down a bit (I still sometimes get crazy things) however now when I press "D" key my computer returns to desktop. I can't do anything except alt-tabbing which sometimes doesn't work too. When I press "A" it writes æææææ. I cleaned it up so many times, tried blowing into the keys while holding the keyboard upside down and shaking it but none of them worked. I tried the keyboard on another computer and that computer got the same thing as mine. I'm assuming that the windows key is stuck now because pressing D gets me to desktop immediately. Also the windows key does not work when I press it on the keyboard. What is more interesting is that when I disconnect the keyboard from my laptop, my laptop continues to do crazy things and I still get to my desktop when I press "D" (from my laptop's original keyboard) or get "ææææ" when I press A until I press the windows key to reset its malfunctioning. However, sometimes this does not work too so I need to restart my computer to be able to get it to normal again. I don't understand why it is happening even though the keyboard is not connected and there is no problem with my laptop's original keyboard. Lastly, I tried "gaming mode" which disables the windows key through the razer synapse engine but it didn't work either. I also uninstalled the razer synapse engine and it is still the same thing.

What should I do or is there anything I can possibly do?

This is standard advice when it comes to Razer Keyboards on this forum.

It's NOT worth fixing.  At best, you use a razer board to salvage its remaining functional keyswitches.

Oh it also seems like you fried the controller...

THAT.... or it's not dry.. stop using it for a week and see if it still does this.

Sounds like you shorted something. You can try taking it apart and drying/wiping everything down then trying it again when it's dried.

Yeah I pulled out all the keys and put the keyboard face-down. Gonna wait 2-3 days and give it a try again. Thanks for your advices.

Dude gets a few drops of water on his keyboard, comes here asking for advice, and the first thing he's told is to buy a $400 keyboard which he will have to put together himself.

That's just very lame, and not funny.

Like the other sensible members have said, just let it dry out for a few days and see what happens. Hopefully it'll be okay. Good luck.

ah what? it's $275 assembled... + whatever shipping / tax..

and considering it's the "LAST" keyboard anyone ever needs to buy... that's better than stocking up on the garbage that most people have in their sigs...

like a bunch of pokers and more crap-tastic widows.

The point is that he wasn't asking about his "last" keyboard to buy. He was asking about a malfunction and your constant Ergodox suggestions (for everything, it seems) are just lame.

The point is, fixing a black-widow is the same as beating a dead horse....  whatever satisfaction there is to be had is at the very best "unhealthy".

The purchase of a black widow was the "first-mistake",  why perpetuate this further..

We have the SOLUTION.....  and if anything, in terms of Feature set and custom-izability the Ergodox is bar none "the most keyboard you can own, while maintaining a low-low price tag"

I know where you're coming from, and that's cool. But you should also factor in that a lot of people here just may not have the money to just flat out buy a new board, let alone an Ergodox.

just give it a couple days as others have said to try and maybe dry out.

black widow's are not cheap regardless who may or may not like them, so do not throw in the towel on your investment.

also..............i would not suggest that you try to take apart as these things are pretty difficult to pop open with all the hidden screws, snaps in weird places and so on.

my bwu regardless of what others think has been a good solid board, however knowing better now you can sure get a whole lot better board for the money- but unless one has been here a while you would not know that.

if it does not dry out and maybe other than shipping-- if it is still under warranty then send that sucker back

any board and just not a bwu does not luike getting wet :'(

I learned the hard way that Razer sells overpriced junk. My recommendation is to throw your keyboard in the garbage where it belongs and get a quality board from WASD.

It's highly unlikely that you'd get any kind of warranty coverage/support from Razer because of the way the keyboard was damaged. To be fair, you wouldn't likely get any sympathy from another company if the same thing happened. However, another keyboard likely will not die because it got a drop or two of water on it.

I have given Razer the benefit of the doubt many, many times over the years and have almost always been burned. The only products of theirs that are worth anything are the mouse pads. Their paper-thin Sphex and the mobile Kabuto are the best I've ever used. They can keep everything else, especially the mice and keyboards.

You can also try putting the components in rice. Don't eat the rice after if you do this though since solder has lead and you don't wan't to expose yourself to anymore lead then necessary. Supposedly rice draws moisture out so it helps to dry things. Just a thought. Good luck :D

I second this man of the mountain's recommendation and grab a nice board from WASD (bare bones preferably so you can source an epic group buy key set).

That's impossible.... If they can afford internet to get on GH, they can afford an Ergodox... It may come down to budget cuts in other areas of their life, but $275 is well within reach of everyone.

If you can get the board working again I would highly suggest selling it and getting a Cooler Master QFR. Better built and easier to customize. Plus it has standard size keycaps so you can switch them out without a tsangan kit.

I had a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate as my second board and after buying a QFR I sold the BWU nearly immediately and haven't looked back.

Throw it out..

Buy an Ergodox.

Except that would be fraud if you're trying to claim something is a manufacturing defect when the problem was created by accidental damage.

ah what? it's $275 assembled... + whatever shipping / tax..

and considering it's the "LAST" keyboard anyone ever needs to buy... that's better than stocking up on the garbage that most people have in their sigs...

like a bunch of pokers and more crap-tastic widows.

Just stop. The ErgoXYZ elitism is severely reducing the quality of posts, and you're being completely unhelpful. This man wants a fix to his keyboard which he spent a decent money on, don't come in and shove your opinion down his throat.
OT: As others have suggested, waiting for it to dry would make sense. If it doesn't work, an RMA from Razer would be in order. If that doesn't work, you'd probably just want to buy a new keyboard, as the switches might not be worth salvaging.

Sounds like you shorted something. You can try taking it apart and drying/wiping everything down then trying it again when it's dried.
Don't use it for a couple of days, perhaps try to wipe it a bit, mine did that too when I spilled dr pepper on it

Yeah I pulled out all the keys and put the keyboard face-down. Gonna wait 2-3 days and give it a try again. Thanks for your advices.

You can also try putting the components in rice. Don't eat the rice after if you do this though since solder has lead and you don't wan't to expose yourself to anymore lead then necessary. Supposedly rice draws moisture out so it helps to dry things. Just a thought. Good luck :D
Oh I thought rice attracted Asians to fix the electronic... Lol.
Yeah, put it in some rice and leave it there for 4-5 days. I've saved many iPhones like that lol.

The point is that he wasn't asking about his "last" keyboard to buy. He was asking about a malfunction and your constant Ergodox suggestions (for everything, it seems) are just lame.

If he bugs you, as he does many other members, why not just drop him into your killfile.

Exactly.

Ergodox is the solution to all your keyboarding problems..

Anything that's wrong with your keyboard can be solved by buying an assembled Ergodox....

And just because you spent "good money"  doesn't make the razer any less of a LEMON....

If you bought a lemon vehicle,

should you,

A,  keep throwing money + time at it in repairs,

or

B,  sell it/ scrap it and buy a toyota camry...

The answer is clear...

The phrase "throwing good money after bad" comes to mind.  Consider it an expensive mistake.  Trust me, I had a love affair with Razer for about a year until their products started failing on me one after the other.  Never again will I buy or recommend that someone buy Razer.

Maybe he doesn't have the money for a new board, maybe that's why he has come here to the glorious website known as GeekHack.org where keyboard enthusiasts can all get along. So maybe just for me or even the whole website stop posting ooh buy an ergodox.

Ergodox is trash. It's un-ergonomic garbage and makes the N64 controller look like the Kinesis. Honestly, who in their right minds would lug around such a big piece of worthless scrap metal so that they can demonstrate to others their massive e-pen*s. You can't even type with correct grammar, with all this supposed 'ergonomics' that you receive. Five periods after a sentence? Some word that has a number and a censor in it? Pathetic. The ErgoDox is a ****ty ripoff of Maltron and the users are the rudest, most unhelpful people on GH.

Not everyone wants, or can afford, an ErgoDox.

It is NOT the solution to every problem.

In this case allowing the keyboard to dry might return it to a state of functionality, if not then because it is only a couple of months old it might be possible to return it.

If THAT eventuates, then maybe the OP could consider buying an alternative board.

And besides, this board did not die due to inherent manufacturing or quality problems, it died due to liquid incursion (probably).

you can put the whole board into a bag of rice, and wait for few days.  And then try it again, it should make the keyboard work again.  If it still not working, I think you should contact razer and ask them will they fix it.

You might try uninstalling the Razer Synapse software and then trying again. If it doesn't go haywire again then it's a software problem, not the 3 drops of water. It will still function perfectly well as a keyboard; even better since you won't have any software issues that may crop up from time to time.

The same thing you described happened to me, and after reading all the negative stuff online, I was ready to throw my Blackwidow in the dumpster. I immediately packed it away and so began my downward spiral buying more and more keyboards looking for that perfect one.  :(

But after a few weeks, I decided to give it another try because I missed how great it is to type on and how amazing it sounds; however, the problems continued - mostly with particular keys spamming - so I removed the software from my computer, plugged the keyboard back in, and voila, no more problems to this day.

What if Razer came out with their own branded ergodox?

OP, 3 drops of water isn't going to do much damage, unless it was more than that amount. You could try taking it apart to see if water has collected somewhere.
Either way, it's 'working' right now so as soon as it dries, it should be fine.

Incorrect.

Everyone can Afford an Ergodox, it might just require a small savings period, minor cut backs to top-ramen.

It is the solution to EVERY keyboard related problem, because that was IN THE DESIGN....

---- The ergonomics
---- The modd-ability
---- The Programm-ability
---- The ease of dis-assembly and repair

Ergodox takes all of the things the keyboard community yearned for and created a product that (currently) has no equal...

All of the pitfalls of standard staggered Qwerty keyboards are addressed....

The Ergodox is the embodiment of betterment and change.

The Black Widow and the continued re-iterations of such antiquated design such as the "WASD Code" is what's holding people back..

And anyone who actually actively USES a keyboard can tell you that staggered qwerty is sub-optimal for one's shoulders/ wrists/ and fingers.

In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
