CM Storm trigger - keycrap
« on: Sat, 19 October 2013, 16:45:07 »
Hi guys,

Just wanted to show what my CM Storm trigger spacebar looks after about 6 months of use.
39915-0

Waow... Grayish plastic already showing under the thin black paint.

It's a first for me. None of the black boards in my sig has displayed such a cheap behavior. Not even my TVS Gold.

well, the trigger caps are translucent caps with a black coating...

So it has a weak coating.

Right... So does my iOne/XArmor POS and although its keycaps turned shiny real quick. The coating was still holding after 6months.

The space bar might be under different stresses than the rest of the keys.  Mine usually shine at about the exact point, but slightly more on top.  if you press the space with your thumb sliding slightly, it would speed up the coating removal, as opposed to most of the keys where you would just press the key straight down.

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've used my TK for six months, and they have no dirt or wear on them besides some stuff on the plate (which I suppose I'll clean for the first time today).
Perhaps the Trigger uses cheaper keycaps. I ended up swapping my spacebar for the one on a Corsair K60, because it happens to be the same size, I think it's a 6.5x, and that one's much better so there haven't ben issues.

That's not really normal, I've had mine for almost a year and the only key that has some kind of failure is the right arrow (kinda weird, since I almost never use it), but if you find CM Storm Trigger keycaps bad, don't even dare getting a CM Quick Fire TK/Razer Blackwidow Ultimate 2013/Corsair K70 or K95/*Insert Gaming Keyboard here*.

Here's a comparison between a Logitech G710+, Tt Meka G-Unit, Metadot Das Keyboard Model S Professional (Costar), Corsair K70 and CM Storm Trigger keycaps:

Anyways, if you find them bad, go straight for a Déck Legend or ofc, a good nonbacklit keyboard, always prefered those myself as well  :p

Might have been a bad batch of keycaps - thinner coating or something.

I agree, the Trigger has one of the absolute worst key caps I've ever had the misfortune of buying. I'd gotten a used Trigger (wanted it as it has MX Green switches), was told it was in 'perfect' condition but when I'd taken possession of it, I was thoroughly disappointed with the condition of the WASD and space bar.....the space bar on mine look like it had similar wear like those of the TS/OP. I've always said that CM should take a look into this, absolutely unacceptable quality from them. Anyway, I'd replaced the WASD and space bar since I use it mainly for gaming, and these keys see the most wear...

I don't do anything special. As for the dust, it's really not that bad. The lightning for the picture was from the side and it really makes it look worst than it is.

*Insert Gaming Keyboards here* Yeah I know. I originally picked the CM QFR with Green cause it was what I thought the best option out there for Green at the time.
I ended up with a QFR with many defective non clicky Greens. The story turned into a Customer Service nightmare after countless back and forth, CM finally replaced the QFR Green with a Storm Trigger with Greens because they were going to be out of stock for a while.

Anyways, if you find them bad, go straight for a Déck Legend or ofc, a good nonbacklit keyboard, always prefered those myself as well  :p

Try (more) on my sig... You'll see that I already own 2 Decks. Trust me, if they were making Legend with Greens, I would have never go the CM route.

I whish Deck were selling keysets... Anyway as for the CM Storm Trigger, CM could have used black plastic for its spacebar since there is no fonts to light up on it, thus no need to use a coated translucent key.

Yeah, I saw your signature only later. I also wish Déck had more switch choices (and especially, font choices, for god's sake, the only company that does a backlit keyboard with a font that doesn't looks bad is Corsair).

Anyways, unfortunately that happens on other backlit keyboards as well, they probably just can't use other kinds of keycaps on the keyboard... :(

I guess once you get burnt once, you know what to expect.

I now like the [insert gaming keyboard]=[Junk keycap] rule of thumb.

Of course with the exception of Deck's where they search and replace "Junk" by "ugly"

I think your best bet is replacing the keys with higher quality caps, but most of the higher quality caps aren't back light friendly.

As I wrote on one of the reply. The spacebar on the CM Trigger is not backlit so I wouldn't care if it is not backlit friendly.
