I'm just frustrated with life in general at the moment. I've been dealing with some pretty heavy stuff all year this year and I just wish things would go one way or the other.

And the saddest part is this is the only place I have to even vent the frustration.  :-X

Oh, now geekhack's not good enuff for you is it ?

My grandfather may not make it past next week. :(

People get old, and people die; it's been that way since people came into existence. I just dreaded these days as a kid and can't believe I'm now here.

What hurts most is how quickly he deteriorated. He was the epitome of oxen strength and came into his current state only in the past few months. The one thing all my family keeps saying is how hard and fast he fell.

Yes, I get depressed about that. I look at my mother and see it coming one day. One main reason I do not want kids is so they don't have to go through watching their elders pass. It is what it is, and it sucks.

This sucks and I'm sorry to hear of it.

My grandfather was super tough with crazy energy. He was doing a frame off restoration of one of his cars in his mid 80's. That's where he ultimately checked out. Came in for a drink, back to the garage and boom, double stroke, gone within a week.

I did service in a nursing home for phone and TV repair, in fact it was the same one he spent his last couple of days in. After working in there for a couple of weeks and seeing people in various stages of dying, I felt so much better seeing that my grandfather checked out hard and fast in the middle of doing what he loved most, not rotting away with mental and physical health slowly turning him into an immobile corpse.

No matter how someone goes it always very hard, but I prefer it to be quick.

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that. I lost my grandmother on Christmas, and it really was super hard to see how slowly she deteriorated. She had a very sever form of Parkinson's and then she caught pneumonia. No matter how you look at it, it's going to suck.

People can go in the most peaceful way possible and it's still going to hurt like a *****. I hope you feel better soon.

I am probably going to drive a 260 mile round trip to pick up a part for my car...

2 questions (in the form of sentences):

(1) I thought that you guys had ditched the Imperial system in favor of metric measure?
(2) That is an awfully long drive unless parts houses are a lot less common than they are around here?
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.

(1) Large distances are the only thing we use Imperial for really. Other than weight in terms of people (in stone) and height of people (in feet)
(2) The part itself is quite rare. It's basically the only complete set that I've found in the right country that isn't a completely extortionate price. Problem is that it's quite large so the guy selling (an individual, not a garage or scrap yard) doesn't want to faff about shipping it. It's the front end of a car complete with headlights and slam panel (metal reinforcement) to give you a sense of scale.

OK, the front end of a car is not exactly a "part" ...

And I hope to get down to 15 (or even, ideally, 14) stone instead of my current 16 since I am not far over 6' tall.

And don't you guys use some arcane measures for distilled spirits in addition to "pints" for beer?

It is still irritating to me to go to the liquor store here and ask for a "half pint" of whiskey and get 175 ml which is WAY short although when we buy a "fifth" the 750 ml they sell us is totally acceptable.

I feel like geekhack could really benefit from using bitcoin.  It seems there's an issue with paypal every other day.  Not to mention all the political bs they get involved in.  Of course, it would be unrealistic to make a full transition, but to start having the option in group buys could save some headaches.

I guess not :P

We use ml for spirits still when being sold at a bar. The Licensing Act states that spirits must be sold in multiples of 25ml, but bottles are another law and are usually 50/75cl bottles. Or a litre.

And then other bottles are pretty much random. Some ciders come in 500ml or 568ml, as well as 330ml. Beer usually comes in either 330ml bottles or cans, as well as 568ml cans, 440ml cans or sometimes even bigger. It's a complete mess.

But a pint is a pint, and will always be a pint. Just shows how I can remember such a random number as 568 as to how ingrained a pint is in the English psyche ;)

Summary:
Last weekend soldered all the diodes, checked all the switches with tweezers, working fine.

This weekend, soldered the switches, now only a few work (ctrl/alt/rshift).
Re-map physical 'q' to 'ctrl', then the physical 'q' now outputs 'ctrl', so the switch must be working. (Did this for most of the QWERTY row, and they output 'ctrl')

I tried to reflash the default layout, and no change.

I'm just frustrated with life in general at the moment. I've been dealing with some pretty heavy stuff all year this year and I just wish things would go one way or the other.

And the saddest part is this is the only place I have to even vent the frustration.  :-X

You're welcome to PM me (time differences aside) if you like.  I probably can't help with anything, but I'm going through quite a few issues at the moment, and maybe we can sympathise with each other.

I just don't like the forced small talk. Just cut it pls. My barber isn't in the state right meow so this chick has been cutting my hair and my barber was dope because he wouldn't talk. But this girl ugh. Your boobs are already at eye level let's not ruin it by awkwardly acting like we care about each other's lives.
No, he’s not around. How that sound to ya? Jot it down.

This is exactly why I don't get haircuts often. I don't wanna small talk, and they all try to. It is painfully awkward.

Unrelated note, ants are bothering me. They are all over my yard. I want nice weather, but I do not want these devil insects all over my house.

I've recently spotted a few scouting bull ants in my house. Probably just hitched a ride but I'm still slightly paranoid haha. What if one bites a guest or something? Not the worst kind of bite but certainly not the best :(

**** everything about those devil insects. I've always heard people call them "bulldog ants" though. Fortunately, I haven't had the displeasure of seeing one in person though since they aren't really in SoCal :))

RIP aquifers :'(

I've seen those before. Always wanted to make one, but the amount of digging yikes...

Here's a question

What happens to the ants that are in there when you pour the aluminium? Are they just vaporized or something? Or can you see little ants on the outside of the aluminium?

But now you're starting to notice that your nose is a little itchy, and you're starting to sniffle a little because you inhaled a little pollen.
