Quick question about LED lifetime and my Ducky Shine 3
« on: Wed, 20 November 2013, 06:13:07 »
Hey guys,

I recently purchased a Ducky Shine 3 (blue LEDs) with brown switches and it's super awesome, so awesome that I'm worried about how long some of its awesomeness will last.

I love how bright the LEDs are on the board, but I'm concerned that they'll fade over time. Is it enough of a concern to actually bother turning the LEDs off when I'm not using them? Or will they remain equally bright over a long period of time, even if I leave them constantly on at 100% power?

Thanks!
Dim

LED have a quite long lifespan.
Probably not as much as a switch, but long enought to buy another keyboard because the shine is too old XD

(but remember that sometime they can die prematurely)

LEDs do fade over time, but that really takes long, LEDs generally have a long lifetime. You probably wouldn't even notice it since it's a gradual process. And even if you would start noticing it you could always replace them, it's not too hard.

lifespan is rated to 50% brightness of original. If you use it, it is constantly getting dimmer. So turn it off. Blue light is not good for your eyes anyways.

This will not be a problem..

They will last longer than it takes for you to become bored with them, and turn them off indefinitely...

Bright-blue lights is a youngster's fascination..

It is the Adult-path to exist in darkness except for which is necessary to survive..

Welcome to Geekhack!

I have two Ducky Shine version 1 bought more than a year ago.  One has had almost constant use at work, and is still as shiny as it was the day I got it.

The other one sees much less use at home (been supplanted by Model M and HHKB), but it still as shiny as.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

On this forum sometimes you don't know if shine is a good or a bad thing  :p
This sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before.

Changing the leds will not be that difficult if it really does happen

problem is color matching.. so you'd have to change ALL of them...

Too many. White LEDs aren't white, they are blue with yellow phosphor. Different wavelength of blue and different amount of phosphor will change the color temperature.

A shame the manufacturers don't throw half a dozen spare LEDs in the box with the keyboard.
