So I may have just spent over $500 on my new board
« on: Sat, 04 January 2014, 23:01:01 »
I think I have a problem, although I'm sure many people on here have spent a lot more in total on boards throughout their lives. I live in the UK, and I've had to have all my stuff shipped over here, so I've included that in the pricing.

I've wanted a board with clears for ages, and I really wanted an ISO layout so I can use it at work, and this is where my problem lay. I decided on getting a board and getting someone to mod it for me and swap out all the switches for clears from mechanicalkeyboards.com.

So I bought a WASD V2 with MX Reds ($110 +$45 P&P), one set of keycaps ($50 + $45 P&P), TWO sets of MX clear switches due to a shipping **** up (2x $49 + $15 P&P), customs costs (£25 for the board + £unknown for the keycaps), and then modding costs (£47 inc P&P both ways (shout out to margo baggins for being patient with me)). So I make it about $537.

What the **** is wrong with me. This is the real price of MX Clears. I think I dun goofed.

Help
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

It's pretty much the most I've ever spent on a single thing that wasn't a car.

I knew getting a decent keyboard would be expensive, but not quite this much. And I haven't even typed on it yet!

kinda curious what happened to with the mx clears that you couldn't get a refund (wouldn't expect to get shipping money back though).  you got to keep the mx reds right?  you can try to sell them to get some money back.

I'm just waiting on the vendor to get the first lot of switches back then hopefully I can get the sale value back. And as for the reds, I might ask margo if he can ship me those back so I can recoup the costs. Good idea.

Congratulations..? That's quite a lot of money man. Maybe take the red switches from the wasd v2 and make ergo clears?

Well I'm curious. A lot of people seem to be talking about ergo clears, when clears themselves are pretty hard to come by. Why do people feel the need to change clears to ergo clears? And what is the difference?

Don't quite know much about them but it seems like they are comparable to mx browns http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX_Ergo_Clear

Damn. That's a heavy pricetag for a plastic keyboard :)) You should have got a Cherry G80-3000HEG. It's a fullsize, UK ISO board with clear switches and thick doubleshot keycaps. It's also got no plate so it's easy to modify. It's hard to find, but doesn't cost $500 :-\

ergo clears are just lighter clears.

most people bottom out when they type.  when they do that on clears, it takes around 100cn.  this is EXTREMELY tiring, especially when typing for speed.

ergo clears are also a heavier brown with a more noticable bump.

the most common complaint of brown switches is that the bump is tiny and you can't feel it at all when you're typing fast.

I think you should push aside the P&P (Postage & Packaging?) to reduce the feeling of expensive.
Totally, you cost 110+50+49+40+70=319$ for the keyboard with Mx Clears.
You can sell Cherry MX Reds that you removed from the keyboard to recover partially of the cost.
Other than that, you spent 218$ on P&P  :-\

I don't want to make you feel bad as I come into the thread thinking you spent $500 so far on keyboardS which is pretty common. But to spend $500 on one keyboard?? Wouldn't it make sense to buy the WASD Code Clear from someone else? I'd sell mine, almost NIB, at $500 including shipping to you!!!

I've spent that much more than once.  But spending that much on a WASD is insane.  Could have got a KMAC or a custom-made GON for that much.

He spent over $200 on shipping and related, so not actually $500 on the keyboard.  Also a whole lot of extra switches that could be resold.

Hopefully this is the keyboard that you wanted, and with a little care it should last you for years.

The problems really start occurring when you have at least two keyboards for each computer.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Hah, looking at the links in your sig, you seem to have gone down the clear route as well :)

Could you tell me a bit about the two boards you have linked there?

Both are clear stem + 62g gold springs and lightly lubed with ro59 oil.

So that increases the actuation pressure and prevents you bottoming out? (I am pretty new at everything deeper than basic switch knowledge)

I've spent that much more than once.  But spending that much on a WASD is insane.  Could have got a KMAC or a custom-made GON for that much.

Yeah, looking back I probably should have researched it more. There are a lot of brands and stuff that I hadn't looked into or even knew about.

You could've easily had a aluminum cased Korean custom at that price...

Like what? I would love something other than a HHKB to put at the top of my list...

Hopefully this is the keyboard that you wanted, and with a little care it should last you for years.

Yeah, I think for the moment I am done. After I get this I have one for each of my two computers at home and one for work. That's all I will need until I can start retiring some - namely my Blackwidow first.

you could have flown to moscow and buy my topre for the same amount of money!
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Well from the majority of the posts here, it seems as if I need to research EVEN deeper before I drop this much cash on a new board.

I think I need to look into topres, korean customs and things like GONs and KMACs... =/

Any idea where to start? :)

Honestly though, I'm not sure why people would pay so much for a KMAC and GON.

There's something about typing on a 5 pound hunk of aluminum versus typing on a piece of plastic. It's not just aesthetics.

That means it's just aesthetics. Right?

aesthetics is a part of the 'package'.  I'm just saying that that single part is enough to justify at least serious consideration.

other parts:

more layouts
programmable (pretty much any one)
weight
metal casing affect switch feel
epeen
ALL zombros wanted:  dead or undead or dead-dead.

If you enjoy it, do not regret it. Once you get that keyboard you want , you can enjoy it for the rest of the decade, and most people use it for hours every day.

Though I have to say, that is more than I would pay for just one keyboard, but compared to most people on this board, I am a cheap bastard.

Sh!t happen

Topre 87U + Shipping + broker fee + taxes ~$400
Digilog aluminum case ~$200
Colored Keyset + Shipping + broker fee + taxes ~150

That's 750$ for a stupid keyboard.

And I'm sure some guys here broke the 1000$ mark for their custom boards.

I thought WASD were the pinnacle of board customisation... But dat GON. There is something to top my list.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

WASD IS the pinnacle of board customisation - for everyday man and woman - mere mortals with limited funds like me.
The GON/KMAC/etc are a class above. I dare not venture into that space!

Yeah, I think for the moment I am done. After I get this I have one for each of my two computers at home and one for work. That's all I will need until I can start retiring some - namely my Blackwidow first.

Famous last words buddy.  Once you get that first keyboard it just naturally starts to flow like a torrent onto your desks, shelves, cupboards, cases and every large container you could find.

Not really, sure you're paying extra for aluminum cases and what not but these babies will remain forever in your collection, I would never part with mine even when I'm dead in my coffin.

Well from the majority of the posts here, it seems as if I need to research EVEN deeper before I drop this much cash on a new board.

I think I need to look into topres, korean customs and things like GONs and KMACs... =/

Any idea where to start? :)

I just want to say, a lot of people here have found their love with topre.

I highly recommend you try them at some point.
Having a bad day?
