I don't like Topre. I'm just gonna say it outright.

I personally think that GON's keyboards are top notch, and a great buy for anyone.

For me: Topre > Matias Alps > MX Clears > MX Blues

Well I was thinking about topres, but I don't think I will have a use for a HHKB. I want to venture into the world of Model Ms, because buckling springs are amazing, and I've not heard a lot about alps. What are they like?

I think I have a problem, although I'm sure many people on here have spent a lot more in total on boards throughout their lives. I live in the UK, and I've had to have all my stuff shipped over here, so I've included that in the pricing.

I've wanted a board with clears for ages, and I really wanted an ISO layout so I can use it at work, and this is where my problem lay. I decided on getting a board and getting someone to mod it for me and swap out all the switches for clears from mechanicalkeyboards.com.

So I bought a WASD V2 with MX Reds ($110 +$45 P&P), one set of keycaps ($50 + $45 P&P), TWO sets of MX clear switches due to a shipping **** up (2x $49 + $15 P&P), customs costs (£25 for the board + £unknown for the keycaps), and then modding costs (£47 inc P&P both ways (shout out to margo baggins for being patient with me)). So I make it about $537.

What the **** is wrong with me. This is the real price of MX Clears. I think I dun goofed.

Help
I think you should push aside the P&P (Postage & Packaging?) to reduce the feeling of expensive.
Totally, you cost 110+50+49+40+70=319$ for the keyboard with Mx Clears.
You can sell Cherry MX Reds that you removed from the keyboard to recover partially of the cost.
Other than that, you spent 218$ on P&P  :-\

Guess $319 for mx clear keyboard is high price.

We sell new keycool 108(black) full size in original package with mx clear for $ 149, including shiping cost .

Yeahh, I mean I have a KC 84 right now that I use for my PC at home, but I really needed an ISO layout, that's why I forked out so much.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

It's the postage fees that are killing you. You need to try to look local next time. With that being said, don't beat yourself up on the cost as you can't put a price on a quality keyboard that will last you far longer then the computer it's connected too. Enjoy :)

$500 can only buy the case of a KMAC

...or about 900 bullets for a P90; which equates to 1 minute of firing it on auto, not factoring in changing magazines.

Sh!t happen

Topre 87U + Shipping + broker fee + taxes ~$400
Digilog aluminum case ~$200
Colored Keyset + Shipping + broker fee + taxes ~150

That's 750$ for a stupid keyboard.

And I'm sure some guys here broke the 1000$ mark for their custom boards.

I thought WASD were the pinnacle of board customisation... But dat GON. There is something to top my list.

Maybe for key caps, but they don't really offer any extra customization if at all beyond that more than any other keyboard has (with the exception of Korean customs).

True.  When you've hit $600 a few times then you're in the upper echelon.

I got a Das Keyboard, found Geek Hack, and then dropped over $1000 on Cherry MX boards.

Then I found Topre, sold my MX boards, and then dropped another > $1000 on Topre boards.

Then I found the ErgoDox, sold my Topre boards, and then dropped another > $1000 on ErgoDoxes (still waiting on 3rd one), and I'm not done yet (gonna get white PCBs, transparent switch tops, and 2 sets of trans keycaps, DSA/DCS).

That doesn't count how much I've spent on mice, nor the one-off boards I've purchased (Matias, Unicomp, old Cherry boards, etc...).

The GON/KMAC/etc are a class above. I dare not venture into that space!

Not really, sure you're paying extra for aluminum cases and what not but these babies will remain forever in your collection, I would never part with mine even when I'm dead in my coffin.

Damn ****ing right this LZ-S and I have almost been together for a year (Feb 15th anniversary) and it's coming with me into my coffin.

Very close, very close indeed.  If you are going to mix black and yellow, then perhaps yellow `~ \| F5 F6 F7 F8 and maybe space bar.

Otherwise all yellow is find by me :)

Yup, when people warn you that this site is a wallet hack and watch out, take it seriously! I just spent a fortune on new boards as well so I feel your pain.

keyboards are an expensive hobby....

I easily spent $750 on my HHKB....

initial HHKB purchase....then bought a 55g realforce to rob for domes....some lube.....dental bands.......then a keycap set.....extra space bars.....carrying case.....cable....clack....brobot....bingecap....

SpAmRay you got any extra 55g domes you wanna sell? I am really keen to make my HHKB a 55g. So I figure I will slowly start collecting extra 55g domes. I'm only halfway along that path, still need a cable, brobot, clack and extra spacebar. Are you at least happy with the final product? :)

Actually  I've had a few people inquire about those but I'm not interested in parting with any of them!

I was about to say... I spent around $700 for my HHKB along with the accessories. The first lot were HHKB Type-S, acrylic palm rest, keyboard roof, HHKB official bag and a set of spare keys. The next thing for HHKB was a set of spare Realforce 103KT1 keys.

Soon I will be looking forward to G80-5000 HAMDE which is rare and it will also be my first Cherry MX board.

All hobbies can be expensive, but if one doesn't appreciate hobbies then why bother fueling one in the first place?  :)) In this materialistic world (especially for the first world) everyone seems to be absorbed in some material.

Help

Don't despair dude, all is good as long as you like the board. I think you kind of got in trap with buying the board with switches that you don't like, then buying switches separate and having someone mod it for you at the end, and to top it all the shipping charges..... The only way you could of save around $200 was if you waited 4-6 months for WASD to stock some boards with clears.

I personally like blues but always thought they were way too light, but since I built my own Korean full board I got the blue switches and mixed it up with 60g Korean springs for alphas and numeric and 80g korean springs for the rest of the keys. After this build I noticed that the 80G which are about the same as the greens I did liked and the click sounds deeper because you need a tad bit more force to depress it. So it was a no brainer for me to go with green switches for my next board to pair with Tai Hao caps.

Lucky me I live in US which means shipping is reasonable, Tai Hao caps were at good price for all 5 sets and I already knew what switch I like most (green) + if I decide to mod it I could do it my self. To me it turned out around $230 for the barebone greens, 5 sets of DS caps, sleeved cable and sleeved adapter cable + shipping. I know for what you spend you could of gone Korean aluminum block board but no ISO layout, or you could of gone with Gons (I think he offers ISO but not 100% sure) but his boards are lightweight when comes to packing metal in them but they look really slick.

Any ways as long as you like the board its what matters and don't worry about how much you have spend, here is what $230 got me

For that money I'd have just bought a GON or something.

Yeah I came in expecting a Korean board, was quite surprised to read WASD v2.

I am so glad imgur is blocked at work so I can't see the pictures of amazing more expensive boards you guys are posting.

Fortunately I don't have kids, otherwise they would be going hungry right about now! I have a few more things to save up for before I get another keyboard, so I won't have co-workers laughing at me for that much longer.

I hope by the end of next week it will all be here so I will have something to show off to you guys.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Holy necro hwood!

I spent $400 to have a Déck Legend with MX clears imported. But I have broken the $1000 mark on my Korean custom and will go over that soon with a small addition to that setup. ;)
