Opinions on 10 keyless kbs?
« on: Sat, 25 January 2014, 14:56:29 »
Howdy all,

I am in the market for picking up a 10 keyless keyboard, I am leaning towards either the -

Topre Realforce 87U 10 keyless
http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rftenkeyless

or

Filco Majestouch 2 MX Brown 10 keyless
http://www.amazon.com/Filco-Majestouch-2-Tenkeyless-FKBN87M-EB2/dp/B004WOF7QM

Any other selections I should be aware of that you would recommend? Opinions?

Those are two really good keyboards but they both use different switches, so I'd say which ever switch you like more, get that one.

Yes, have the MX blues Majestouch 2 and Realforce 104U, looking to go slim down but am open to hearing about other brands I may not be aware of.

the only other one out there is ducky.. all the others are "g4m3r brands" and have a bit of fluff...

I think ur probably ready for a custom..  hit up the GBs...

Of course I personally recommend the Egdx.. but..... if you must have rectangles, the gh60 / phantom's always there.

If you have a RealForce already, so you really like it?  A lot of people who try Topre say they can't ever go back to anything else.  If that is the case, get another RealForce :)

Otherwise, QFR or Ducky would be a strong contender to a Filco.

You might also keep a look-out for the CM Novatouch keyboard, probably coming out soon - Topre with MX-compatible stems.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

For affordability, a QFR is a great choice because of its quality (relatively) and price, especially on sale. My favorite at the moment, though, is Ducky; great build quality and some amazing light modes (as well as key repeat) on their Shine series, as well as thick PBT keycaps on their special editions.

Yep, I am using the RealForce now, over my Filco MJ2 blues and IBM Model M, just wanted to solicit some opinions and see what's out there. I'll most likely pick up a RF 87U. Never tried the MX Browns, how does that stack up against the blues? Same experience minus the clacky?

Switch preference is all personal opinion. A lot of people like browns.

I'm not one of them and personally agree with everything demik said, but hey I hate blues to.

which leopold? fc700 or 200?

haven't used the 700, but my main problem with it is the non standard spacebar. say good bye to switching your keycaps and including the spacebar.

i also had some disconnection issues when i owned a 200, but the person i sold it to never had that problem (don't worry, i let him know the problem it had).

The Leopold is a great boars. You need to keep in mind that they use Cherry stabilizers. The 700R also comes with fairly rough PBT keycaps. Other than that, they're pretty similar.

Like said earlier, switch preference is personal. It'd be best to try a full board, but if not there are switch testers and samples out there. I think brown switches are fine. I'd get a board with them if I was concerned about noise. Otherwise I prefer blues.

If you like your 104U then buy the Elite Keyboards All 45G Weight RealForce! It is worth the $240 but for some crazy reason they dropped it under $200. Such a steal! :D

There's a reason that people pay $500+ for custom boards, because they're simple better than the standard. Same with Filco, it's relative build quality is supposed to be quite a bit higher than Realforce boards (subjectively, the case has a really ugly amount of extra bezel attached to it as well).

Its not so much the price of the Filco in general, just the fact that I've seen them in a bunch of other places for cheaper.

I see what you mean. It's slightly overpriced in my opinion, and I wouldn't get a standard TKL MX board for that price, it just is no different than any other TKL board. Maybe if it was somewhere like $120 or so it would be reasonable.

Youre misunderstanding. They are new for 199 as we speak right now. In a purchase as big as a realforce compared to a filco, im sure that 50 dollar difference is minimal. Hence my comparison.

It's actually quite large. Perhaps you're well off and it doesn't matter to you, but spending $120 on a Filco (or often <$100 for used, compared to almost no reduction in used Topre boards) is a huge difference from spending about twice that on a Topre board.

No we are talking about a 150 dollar filco. This is why this started. Now you say that used boards have no place in this conversation and now you compare them. It has nothing to do with being well off. You took a 150 to 200 dollar comparison and tried to make it a <100 to 200 comparison. You cant possibly say I cant bring a used topre into the equation and then bring a used filco in... the original statement still stands. The difference between the new filco that OP referenced and the realforce is 50 dollars. If youre picking up this mech keyboard hobby, you have spending money. My original statement said that if I was spending 150 on a filco (like the one OP referenced) that id rather buy a realforce. Surely you could say that a used filco would be less but I also say a used topre could be as well. I was only telling you it wasnt a joke. Case closed. Enjoy your day.  :thumb:

You say that more than a 30% raise on the price on an already expensive keyboard is small amount? Or that the Realforce is more worth it I don't understand...

Just that theyre both expensive and that it wouldnt be wrong to pay 50 more on a highly regarded board

Dont be naive, if the new one is coming in at 199, and youve used one for a couple of months and had to sell it, what would you list it at reasonably? Also please dont digress to previous comments when were in mid conversation. I explained all of my points thoroughly.

$175. the selling point of topre is to be able to resell it for next to no loss.

please show this 150 board you said you saw.

filco tkl should be $150 tops..
woahhhh the price on that is nutty, for that much id rather buy a realforce

There's a reason that people pay $500+ for custom boards, because they're simple better than the standard. Same with Filco, it's relative build quality is supposed to be quite a bit higher than Realforce boards (subjectively, the case has a really ugly amount of extra bezel attached to it as well).
Its not so much the price of the Filco in general, just the fact that I've seen them in a bunch of other places for cheaper.

this is why ducky > filco when it comes to standard type boards.  they're much more innovative and they charge you for it.  much better than not beung innovative and charging you for their brand name.

also, i laughed at $150 realforce joke lol.
Ive seen them for 150 in classifieds a couple of times let alone theyre only 199 right now... not seeing the joke when its a legitimate price

What? Show me a legitimate Realforce that's not half-dead for $150 (not including the Type Heaven) and I'll accept it as truth. Until then, make less bad jokes please.
Dont be naive, if the new one is coming in at 199, and youve used one for a couple of months and had to sell it, what would you list it at reasonably? Also please dont digress to previous comments when were in mid conversation. I explained all of my points thoroughly.
While I get your point I have to agree with him that they never go that low, on the other side I have seen recently a Filco for 85 shipped.
This sucks more than anything that has ever sucked before.

This is the "joke" we have at hand here. I said if I am spending 150 for a filco.... id rather rather spend the 199 on a brand new realforce... show me the joke. This is getting out of hand.

The 25 dollar difference is enough to be worlds apart apparently. Could you honestly say that youd spend 150 on a filco instead of a 175 (as you put it) realforce? Thats the point. Its not outrageous.

you're comparing buying used to buying new.  not a valid comparison the slightest.

i'm not sure at any point in time did i say anything about the value of a filco being worth it at $150.

i just said that expecting a realforce at $150 was funny.

that's a 50% difference.  imo, that's significant.  also in line with what rfs sell for (retail - $25)

browns suck compared to blues. don't even bother going that route.

it's a half assed switch that doesn't know if it's linear or tactile

Funny you say that, I hate blues and love browns. To each their own..
