Comcast torrenting letter-RECEIVED!
« on: Sun, 03 August 2014, 13:09:54 »
Got this letter from Comcast for torrenting. I download very little, only home 4-6 days a month. I guess that's what I get for downloading some current social popular trash! I suppose this is for the actual uploading (seeding) that was occurring, right? LOL

I was using Vuze and not taking any particulars safety countermeasures, just looked up a couple things and downloaded. That'll teach me! LOL

wow, seems like usually they only bug you about it when the downloading starts to get ridiculous, guess Comcast is dead set on improving its reputation even more :p

I openly admit to downloading. It's not a money saver, it's a curiosity thing. I can live without it easily. I'm not a big tv/movie watcher, I catch a couple shows once/twice a week (2-3 hours) to chill/escape/be entertained/see fun stuff. I occasionally stream Hulu for 2-3 things and download 1-2 things (maybe a year old movie, or in this case a silly HBO show. So I download from a couple items to maybe 7-8 items in a month on the high side. Pretty fast connection and perhaps a high of 5 gigs data? I don't know what my overall monthly internet usage is, but I'm only home every other weekend.

One thing I've noticed is that you can find old, obscure stuff torrenting that I haven't seen elsewhere. I've enjoyed some of the freedom of downloading, it's been fun. And sorry, I absolutely do not feel like a criminal for having had done it. Yes, I completely understand the logic behind copyright. I'm an attorney (non-practicing).

I suppose if you couldn't care less about torrenting pirated content there's not much else to add. Pity some of the most recent episodes of popular shows aren't available for same-time purchase though, big mistake by content publishers imo.

No but seriously, how do you search for anything on IRC without already knowing which channels to go into to.

My previous internet service provider (Grande Communications) suspended my service twice for downloading (not seeding) copyrighted content. I wasn't bold enough to see what would happen the third time. My current provider (Cable One) apparently gives no ****s. :)

In my particular instance:
#1
I'm not desperate to see the most recent episode of True Blood (otherwise I'd have HBO) but I think I downloaded episodes 1,2,3,4 that day and I've only watched the first episode. I could have substituted that show with some other "legal" program to chill and waste 45mins. So I guess I'm not an avid fan, just an opportunist pirate :)

#2
It's the challenge for the lazy non-thinker perhaps.

#3
Circumventing is always exciting. I'd be content with downloading 6-18 month old movies. LOL

I haven't received any notices from Comcast since I started using private trackers, and I download terabytes a month.
I've got digital hoarding issues.

Holy crap, this s**t is disturbing.

Yes, it's most likely for seeding. You'd think they should rather spend their time sending this stuff to THE PEOPLE WHO CREATE THE TORRENTS, not the people who download them.

Besides, torrents are good for business and actually improve the sales of most of the media that's downloaded. Just look at Game of Thrones. They purposefully withheld the BluRay releases until after the complete seasons had been aired which meant that people downloaded them since they couldn't buy them. This ended being the best advertising for them and they could sell the rights to other broadcasters for massive money. You don't see the producers of GoT complaining about it, since they most likely did it like this on purpose. Clever buggers.

The same goes for most music, especially the really good stuff. You listen to their stuff from downloads and then buy the albums either for better quality, the joy of ownership or to directly support the artist.

Same goes for GOOD movies and series. If it's good, you'll buy the BluRay. If it's not, it doesn't deserve the sales in the first place.

As an aside, here in Finland we have an interesting thing called "media tax". When we buy blank media (CD-R, DVD-R, etc), we pay a premium on it since it could possibly be used for storing copies of copyrighted media. This "tax" is then paid forward to the big media companies (Sony BMG, etc..)

On top of that the same big media groups are pushing for making torrenting illegal for the same reasons, that it COULD be used for spreading copied media.

Meanwhile in Russia, the government is offering bouties of more than 100,000$ for anyone who can identify users of Tor browsers and censorship of the internet is rising. Doesn't look good. When you have state sponsored sensorship of media, propoganda rules the airwaves. I know, I used to live in apartheid South Africa.

This s**t has got to stop.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Oh so Vuze has a search built into the client. I see so its just searching some public site. Thats your main problem there.

Hmm, that's a pretty interesting letter you got there.

First let me say that Comcast sucks the most massive turds.  Horrible company.  Monopolists and criminals.

With that said, that letter appears to be Comcast's attempt to protect itself from a copyright infringement suit brought by HBO (the presumptive owner of the True Blood copyright).

They are trying to lay all of the blame off on you.  But it probably won't work.  Comcast will get sued as well, since they have deeper pockets than you do.  I feel secure in saying that even though I don't know how much money you have, because Comcast has deeper pockets than just about everybody, except maybe Bill Gates, but they might have more money than even him.

Even more interesting is who busted you:  "IP-echelon", located at 6715 Hollywood Blvd, Suite 229, Los Angeles CA  90025.  See here:  https://www.google.com/maps/place/6715+Hollywood+Blvd,+Los+Angeles,+CA+90028/@34.101554,-118.336599,3a,90y,6h,90t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1syM_knI8tB4ZfnMeCFlBawQ!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x80c2bf23656e5a75:0x69dd2880a13d40b1!6m1!1e1

IP-echelon is probably one or two guys with a computer in that second floor office above that Japanese restaurant.   Anyway, I can't think how they make money, unless they have some kind of subscription business with HBO, where they get paid every time they find an infringer or something.

If you don't want letters I would not recommend Demonoid. Get into a good private tracker. Definitely not fool proof but much better.

Anyway, I can't think how they make money, unless they have some kind of subscription business with HBO, where they get paid every time they find an infringer or something.

what happened to that quote omfg

also how to torrent: just do it, unless if you don't have antivirus
basically antivirus is a pack of condoms and torrenting is pulling chicks at an aids clinic

Nice

Peerblock and demonoid at minimum. Then VPN.

If you don't want letters I would not recommend Demonoid. Get into a good private tracker. Definitely not fool proof but much better.

Thats very true, Private is better then public.  :thumb:

tier 3 plebe?

I would go with usenet myself. I use it for 90% of my downloads. $15 for 2 months on Astraweb is pretty good for unlimited downloads at full speed 100% of the time.

Soooo...I get my monthly Comcast bill and it went up from about $73 to $87. All I have is some basic channels (nothing premium, no sports, no pay channels, etc) and Internet that's pretty quick (advertised as Blast Plus). I don't watch tv, and the internet is way faster than I need for steaming. I only have one device, maybe two online at the same time. I'm willing to downgrade a bit. I tell them I want any "deals they have". Lady says all the deals are more expensive than what I'm paying. I tell them I have a Direct TV deal that I'm going to sign up for. She immediately transfers me to a "customer retention specialist" that offers me the EXACT SAME channels and internet for $70 mo and added HBO.

I just thought it was funny that of all things that could be added, it's HBO, and free at that.

Seems ironic, lol

If you don't want these letters

GO RENT THE SHOW.

Personally I can't stand pirated content.  I don't have a single bit of pirated content in my home.  If you want to support the producer/artist than just go buy it.  If you are curious about a show/movie go rent it.  If you are curious about a music album buy a song or two from you whatever pay for MP3 software of choice.

I'm sorry for sounding like a **** but come on, how much money have you spent on keyboards and you can't go to the rental shop of choice and spend $3 to check out a TV show?

Explain this "problem" to me.

Say for instance you own a bar and you have a customer that is selling drugs.  Are you the problem if you kick said customer out of your bar?  This is the exact same path of logic.

An illegal activity was involved, the owner of the medium for the illegal activity acted in their best interest, and yet they are the problem not you for doing something illegal.  I fail to see the logic in this.

Meanwhile in Russia, I can buy a ****ton of CDR's and Sony BMG isn't getting a single penny out of it. Also I can seed and leech a gazillion bytes of data and no one is going to send me letters.

I hope this **** never stops.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

That doesn't mean it is still not theft.  The only way it isn't considered theft is if you already own a physical copy.  Same thing with emulators and roms for old game consoles.  They are actually illegal to own unless you own the physical hardware.

It's more like "civil disobedience" than "theft." The movie and television industry needs to change their business model, similar to how the music industry was forced to. I pay $10/mo for Spotify, and I don't need to "illegally" download music content, because I have access to it via a subscription service.

I also pay $135/mo for access (internet pipe) and content (cable TV). And $8/mo to Netflix, etc. So I should also have on-demand access to video content via subscription. Until the movie and TV industry realizes that this is the business model, people will continue to "illegally" download the content they seek.

There is no way to force the movie/TV industry to change their business model, other than to hurt their profits, similar to how the music industry was forced to change. The way to do this is to support "illegal" downloading.

I respect your position, Melvang, but I disagree philosophically with it.

Considered by whom or what? You personally? Your city law? Your county law? Your state law? Your country law? Someone or something else?

Let me guess, public tracker?

You want to torrent use private ones, and a seedbox if you must.
