Are people too cheap nowadays?
« on: Mon, 22 September 2014, 22:33:51 »
I'm sorry if this appears as a rant and what not, but i'm just a little bit frustrated really.

Essentially, I was in the process of selling my 2013 Macbook Pro 13" on Ebay, I also put it on a few other places such as Craigslist and Gumtree to try and get a quick sale. Things were not progressing as fast as I would like in terms of sales on craigslist and gumtree and I was just getting targeted by scammers repetitively, so I thought I would use Ebay and get it done the safe way.

Essentially, it's as work machine, it's been used less than 10 times because of well, I just don't use it. It still has warranty until January, it has no marks, no scratches, no scuffs, scrapes, etc. It's in perfect condition and I also even offered to ship it with a free Magic mouse, yet although it had 25+ watchers and over 13 bids, the users didn't bid above 700GBP (I was hoping to get 700-725 at least for the MBP), but obviously it didn't hit that.

I have never had an issue with selling things in the past on ebay, I've sold Mac products on ebay for very good prices in the past with minor losses and it's just a little frustrating when you want to get rid of X item so that you can get paid, get it shipped out and put into effect other actions on what you were planning to do once that item sold, but when it fails, it's just annoying.

So yeah, do you think people are just too cheap nowadays? It seems to me that people just want a cheap deal, so that they can profit and for you to well.. not profit, lol.

Thoughts?

Quit trying to extort people. You didn't like it when it happened to you.

Sounds like you were expecting too much for it. What were the specs? The model you listed seems to sell from anywhere between 500 and 700 GBP.

Edit: Scratch that, found the specs. You were expecting too much, that model regularly sells for like 500-600 GBP.

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

My model only sells for less when the Warranty has expired and it has signs of wear and tear, to which mine has none and still has the warranty and what not.

Specs are here:

2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz
4GB 1600MHz memory
500GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Built-in battery (7 hours)2

I also sold this model last year, but obviously it wasn't the exact same model, that had 12 months of warranty though, but that sold for 850, so..

Even on Ebay it states that this model sells from 600-700 on average.

Haha I totally forgot about that. Sounds like someone needs a reminder in how eBay works.

Oh you mean when other users boost the price of their own product, just so that it can sell for more? Yes, that is something that I do not do, hence not extorting people.

I set high prices for high value items because that's just the way it works unfortunately, same goes for high value keyboards, e.g. HHKB Pro 2, you buy that for what? $250? and you sell it for around that because it's a niche item, same goes for the MBP.

Far far too much IMO.

Far too much? I don't see how 700GBP is far too much, if that would have been met, then that would have been fine and I would have been okay with that, brand new it's 900GBP and mine has less than 10 recharge cycles, so in 9 months, it's only been used 10 times.

But heh, whatever.

So what's the problem, you're getting a high average price for it.

IMO, unless there's a significant savings (80% of new price would be about the highest unless it's a REALLY expensive item) in buying used, I'd rather just buy it new.

Oh I just wanted to rant really, when I buy a used macbook pro, I spend anywhere between 600-710/725 and then the shipping costs rack it up to around 740/750, if you go for the lower end prices, they're out of warranty, torn up, scrapes, scratches everywhere all that ****.

I also included a FREE Magic mouse as an insentive to buy which is worth what? 50 quid? so  yeah.  I still think people are too cheap imo.

Let me teach you how eBay works, since, after all this time, you are still uncertain.

You want a certain price for an item? Don't ****ing auction it. Place a Buy It Now price on it and there. You get what you want, if someone deems it to be of that value. If not, then it's overpriced.

You want to auction it off anyway? Set a ****ing reserve. Now, if it doesn't reach what you want, it doesn't sell.

Have you learned anything today?

This is why I don't bother selling small items like this..

I just hand them down to younger cousins..  they're young, so they're still plenty happy with -any stuff-

Auctions are more likely to entice users as 60% lets say, of users who browse Ebay tend to skip past buy it now items because I don't know? They want to snipe it, they want to get it cheaper than the intended price. This is actually indicated in the advanced selling options on Ebay, so I thought I would give it a go. I have relisted the Macbook now as Buy it now with best offers at 715, in hopes that I'll get a 685 bid for the 700 that I want.

I set a reserve, hence why it didn't sell, cutiepie.

I know very well how ebay works, obviously you're a mad little boy who needs to try and escalate himself by crude language because obviously in your real life, you're emasculated by family and friends, day in and day out.

Thanks for your very mild attempt to humor me and my post, but you have failed miserably because well, you're a moron and you sound like a child. (That's the impression that I got from your unintelligent reply/replies anyway).

Well this was fun, we all learned a little bit about eBay, and now the game's over.  If we can all play nice we can unlock this again, and continue to calmly and insightfully discuss the multitude of purchasing and selling options available on eBay.
