Dude, I'm not gonna unleash your wrath :))
But seriously, it's a GTX 970 and an intel i5-4690K which both were at a really good deal. Also a HyperX 240GB SSDD plus a seagate barracuda 2TB for other stuffs.
However, she's considering a proper laptop instead. Any thoughts on that? (I'm asking everyone, not just tp)
Based on a specs you listed it's a gaming rig ? If so gaming should remain on desktop and not in overpriced laptop that will overheat .
Laptop are fine for all the other usages .
Gaming/drawing other graphical stuff.. aka cpu and ram! But yeah, I get what you mean.. but when you might end up at a uni with game designs, 3D, etc. having a high end laptop might not be such a bad idea. I do, however, agree that gaming is mainly for a desktop
EDIT: I'll give insight as to why such a high end graphic card etc later.. but right now I'm making dinner :))
There's no such thing as a high-end laptop..
Only overpriced bricks that tends to overheat and / or throttle...
If you're gonna go SERIOUS 3dmax , get something like the titan, because it's more tailored for workstation stuff..
as far as CPU, 4690k is fast enough as long as it's overclocked.. the PROBLEM is to properly OC a 4690k, you need to De-lid..
and that may require remounting here and there if the tim experiences pump out, under the ihs..
So.. if your GF is the pots+pans+apron type, prolly get the 4790k for safe measure and accept a lower safer oc like 4.4 or 4.2... for which you don't need to delid.
