mason jar meals
« on: Wed, 18 February 2015, 01:11:14 »
Mason jar salads/parfaits/other layered meals are super trendy right now.

Have any of you jumped on this trend? If so, tell me what you did.

Also, where can I buy mason jars for cheap?

My friend uses mason jars to make easy oats (oats, milk, greek yogurt, fruit, etc.). Combine everything in mason jar, put in fridge overnight and you're good to go. I for one won't try it especially since it's so cold where I am and if I wanted oats I would make them hot. He likes it because of the convenience though.

Typically, that's how I take salads to work/school for lunch. It's not so much because of the trend and more so that I just hate having tupperware open up in my backpack.

glass is quite heavy.. i'd think thin ss containers would be better.

I'll gladly take the extra weight if it means not having salad all over my work... I already carry a 6lb laptop and my kingsaver...I barely notice an extra 3-4 ounces of glass

So these are just regular meals...that happen to be in a different container? And it's a trend? I must be missing something here.

it makes sense to an extent... storing food in glass would be healthier than plastic (damn you plastic and your carcinogens...) and also make the food taste better (plasticy taste, ew).

but, at the same time, glass is more fragile...

I don't like having to reach so far in with my fork for my salad. Dressing gets on the fork handle. And I can't *handle* that.

I've made these in infinite variations all fall and winter, if you have an asian grocer, switch it up and get other veggies and things like the grilled ika maki and stuff to put in as well!
