GH book club?
« on: Thu, 05 March 2015, 18:24:48 »

Update:

Votes..

We're reading 1984..  From today. March 12, 2015..  2 weeks..

I don't think this book is that long, I remember I didn't pick it during middle school, but the book itself was small..

Been re-reading ASOIAF while phone has been broken. On 3rd book and still as awesome as ever. I've got the book 'The Road' I've always wanted to read but never got round to it. Want to at some point reason The Hunger Games as well.

Glissbro advised me to read Enders Game as well as he said it's great. I used to love reading and since smart phones (I know it's my own fault) I've just gone to slack and browse Reddit and ****.

The Road, and many other books by McCarthy are a fantastic read.  I would highly recommend reading No Country for Old Men too!

Nope...because I like my porn with sex.

I love to read, and could use an excuse to allow myself the time to read more.

This would be my reason for taking part as well. Would give me a reason to read something other than a textbook every now and then.

Ok cool.. It seems people are interested..

So.. let's start with some suggestions..

I'm eyeing, Yakuza Moon_ Memoirs of a Gangster's Daughter  by.. Shoko Tendo..

Synopsis:   Born into a wealthy family of a Yakuza Boss, Shoko delineates her turbulent life with a string of abusive lovers and her surreal struggles.

I think we should keep to "shorter" books.. because it takes a really long time to read leviathan class books as a group.

I'll read Fifty Shades of Grey, only because then I can give a good critique of it :P

If we don't do that, how about "1984" I've never read it, but I heard it is good.

Tp, get a google poll going or something of that nature once we get more suggestions in.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If we do Asimov, might as well start with Foundation. I've always meant to read it.

I also suggest Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson. Been meaning to read that one also.

Anything by William Gibson. Probably Neuromancer would be a great place to start.

Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash.

1984 and 1Q84 would both be good. It's somewhat helpful to have read 1984 going into 1Q84, but not absolutely necessary.

11/22/63 by Stephen King.

I'll think of more suggestions later.

The Bridge trilogy, also by William Gibson, is fantastic.  Just finished reading them for the nth time.

But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

People that voted for Ender's Game..   I'm assuming you didn't read it already right?..

don't vote for books you've already read LOL..  this isn't highschool homework.. hahahahahaha

We're under the assumption that you WANT to read these..

I'm just surprised that any GHer hasn't read Ender's game..   If that's you and you voted for it.. it's OK..

Tp4 just surprised i's all.

I don't read much, so... Why did you expect every Gh'er to have read Ender's Game?

(Never mind, I figured it out :P)

need to be careful.. Most scifi books read as children seem fine.. but when ya'll read them as adults..  you realize the story may be compelling, but the prose is drab.
