Do you remember when..
« on: Tue, 09 June 2015, 11:19:56 »
We didn't have the internet...?

/Flashback.

Tp4: __what no, you're making that up

Roop: __I'm telling you Andy's dad told me, they totally have one

Tp4: __I've seen them, black people do not have an extra bones in their legs that make them run faster.

Roop: __Andy's dad knows these things, he works with at least 10 black people at his garage.

Tp4: __well you're pretty dark, did you ask him to check if you have the speed bone?

Roop:
__Yea I asked him, he told me only dark people from Africa has it

Tp4: __Does it also make them jump higher?

Roop:__ I don't know, but I would assume it helps.

Tp4: __Let's go play badminton

Roop: __Ok.

Tp4: __we should get popeyes on the way back

Roop: __yeah, then we can play mortal kombat after that

Tp4: __I was hoping to finish super metroid.

Several things in this memory...

-  No where to check facts
-  We went everywhere on a bicycle
-  We played with OTHER people
-  We did things other than sit in front of the PC

My mum used to work for Digital (a PC company bought out by Compaq in 1998).

They used to provide computers for banks which they had to demolish walls and crane them in to every installation.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

We got dial up in 96', before then we would play basketball or ride our bikes or even walk around the neighborhood, we had dirt roads. Once we took my buddies dads truck for a spin and it broke down, I think we were 11 or 12, and just in time the local sheriffs deputy happened by and helped us out. We manged to get into all kinds of trouble really.

I never had 'high speed' internet until I went to college.

I had dialup in 96, no highspeed until 2002/2003.

Back in 1996 I used to buy videogames off "auctions" run in one of the Usenet newsgroups.

Started dialing up in 87-88 when I was a wee-lad. If we wanted to know something we went to these places called libraries where the information was produced by pundits; not me.

I love libraries. We have a county regional library less than a mile from my house. I go there often.

Plus, they have a couple of dozen public computers, and if my power or internet goes down, I can get online over there.

I've said it before in some other thread (possibly even a TP thread) our 'local' library won't give us a library card because we don't live in town.  :-\

That's crap. Library systems in the south are generally county facilities, or joint city/county.

Do you remember when...

You didn't have a phone, smart or otherwise, on your person 24/7?

This thing would ring, and you would answer with, "Hello?"

You had no way of knowing who was on the other end of the line while it was ringing, until a thing called "Caller ID" came along.

Text messaging? That was called "writing a letter," and you had to pay for a stamp to send it.

Not gross at all!

I hear from a few family members that they are being told by their cell phone provider that they will no longer be supporting their flip phones.

The day I'm told I can't get a flip phone is the day I go back to a landline.

Plus, there are still dial-up Unix systems/shell accounts still in service. :)

Why are you so passionate about flip phones?

1. Compact Size.  Every "smart" phone I see looks like you are carrying around a paperback book.

2. Energy efficiency.  If I don't get too many calls I can go two weeks without charging.

3. Real tactile buttons!  I hate touchscreen with a passion.

4. No BS flaky buggy quasi-compatible apps that require reboots or run the battery dry.

I think that about covers it ...

I have a Galaxy Android with T-Mobile, and I can pull out my SIM and put it in my ancient, bulletproof Nokia 3390 and it works fine.

[with the card size adapter, of course]

I had dialup in 96, no highspeed until 2002/2003.
Dial-up BBS in '92. Imagine Geekhack in console mode. At most one user could dial in at once, unless the owner had multiple phone lines - which was rare. Some weren't even on dedicated phone lines but open only certain hours a day. I was "co-sysop" (mod) at a couple of boards for the Amiga and the "demo scene".
Some boards shared mail and subforums over FidoNet, exchanging messages over the phone once every day. My first contact with Internet was with a bridge from FidoNet to Usenet Mail and News in '94.
In '95 I joined a user group for a type of computer I did not own so that I could get dial-up to a SunOS machine which had Internet access, On it, I used Pine, NN and Lynx for email, News and Web respectively ... in console mode, of course.

Imagine Geekhack in console mode.

I jokingly asked in the Suggestions forum if there was some way to have GeekHack accessible via SSH/BBS.  Somehow mod a BBS package to operate with the Web forum files so you could go old school on it. :D

Also, users could play together with door games and have multiuser chat.

I actually have a rotary phone in my house since we still have a landline. It's annoying as ****, but also suitable decoration!

I actually have a rotary phone in my house since we still have a landline. It's annoying as ****, but also suitable decoration!

My grandparents had a rotary phone up until a few years ago.... have you tried using it drunk yet? Now that is a true test of skill.

I feel like if I was drunk using the phone would be the least of my concerns.
