Why did you guys let this thread get so stale?

I got an email from West Coast Shaving that they now have their own branded DE razors.  They actually look pretty nice.  What do you guys think?

I like the look of the Black on Track. I've been thinking about getting a slightly more aggressive razor than my DE89.

I'm no DE expert but the price looks about average with what you might expect to get from Merkur or similar. A lot of the brands are exactly the same model just different prices based on whos name is stamped on it.
I personally prefer the vintage gillettes on ebay. You can get some fairly nice stuff for $15.

Vintage razors look really sweet, but many of them are butterfly and those make me really nervous.

I use a vintage Gillette adjustable from my grandfather, and I really love it.

By butterfly you mean how the top opens to accept the blade?  If so, why does that make you nervous?

From a pure mechanical standpoint I don't trust the twist-to-open butterfly mechanisms. I know they shouldn't open up while shaving, but when holding sharp implements to my throat I prefer the three-piece design.  ^-^

Hmmm ok I can understand that but mine has never opened, and it's hard to explain why but I don't think it would ever open accidentally.  Are there reports of that?

Hmm... Someone said "TTO"?

Got this two beauties in today mail. It's British-made Gillette Parat and Brasilian Gillette Mono-tech. Nice ones!

Going to shave with Parat 'morrow.

I was using the Schick Hydro5 for a while, and then recently (about two months ago) switched to a safety razor. I bought the Van Der Hagen kit at Target and loved the new experience, but it got old pretty fast. It takes me so much longer to shave with a safety razor, and I end up with more irritation and a worse shave. This could honestly just be due to lack of experience.

For someone like myself who doesn't grow a ton of facial hair and doesn't have to replace blades very often, the Hydro5 works better. It's faster, it shaves closer (so far, since I'm not too experienced with the safety razor), and it's pretty hard to nick my moles.

I still use the safety razor on the weekend, but I don't feel like waking up extra early during the week. It takes like three times as long just because the process of lathering, storing, cleaning, and being extra careful not to slice my face open. I really like going through the process, but it's too much of a hassle when I'm getting ready for work because I'm really not a morning person.

I know a lot of people prefer safety razors, but I'm definitely not ready to completely switch.

I do want to get a Merkur 34C and some good quality shaving soap and see if that makes a difference. The Van Der Hagen stuff seems alright, but I have to only lather my face then shave, then lather my neck then shave, otherwise if I try to lather everything it's usually kinda dry by the time I get to my neck and then I get a ton of irritation.

Maybe I'm just doing it all wrong, but I've watched quite a few nick shaves videos and I don't really see what I'm doing wrong.

It seems your soap isn't very good. With thick lather from good soap you can lather all your face and shave at your leisure. I can recommend Proraso soap and creams. Maybe it is not the best soap, but it's pretty good and makes thick, slick lather.

If you face lathering, why don't you experiment with bowl lathering? From my experience it helps with lather quality control, and you can easy experiment with adding water, getting more soap on brush, etc.

Also, I don't say Van der Hagen razor is bad - but if you can, get yourself Merkur, EJ or Muehle. Or Gillette Tech from 1940s or 50s - there are a lot of them on eBay.

P.S. About time for shaving... It's 15-20 minutes for me, but it worth it.

I have a beard, but I still have to trim the neck/cheek line every couple of days. Probably like ten minutes for a regular shave, 20 minutes or so for shave and trim at home.

Awesome, thank you for the recommendation. I know that usually you get what you pay for, and $30 for a razor, bowl, soap, and brush is super cheap. The Van der Hagen soap is only like $3 by itself, where as other soaps I've looked into were $10-20. I know price isn't always indicative of quality, but when there's that big of a gap there's gotta be a good reason.

I was looking into some Barrister & Mann soaps, but those were like $16 each. I'll definitely order some Proraso and maybe the Merkur that I've been wanting and hopefully that makes a difference. Might order some different blades too.

You might want to order a sampler pack of blades; sometimes I think people underestimate how the different blades behave when shaving.  Some are just too sharp for people, others too aggressive a bevel, etc.

Well, you right - decent soap costs about 10 bucks, and any soap above 20, IMO, way overpriced. But there are exceptions - this Wednesday got MEM olive shaving cream from friend in Israel - it makes thick and slick lather, good for my skin and it's price just 10 shekels (about 2 and a half bucks). But, alas, when imported to, say, USA, it price soaring to 10 or 12 dollars. Worth to try anyway, IMHO - but after Proraso.

Oh, my personal favourites in Proraso soaps are Red and Green - Red has more masculine scent and Green is mentol-scented and has pleasant coolin effect on skin.

And also, by all means, get a sampler blades pack - some blades which works for one man, won't do for another. Astra, Personna, Shark, Gillette 7 O'Clock, etc.

Doesn't the green on have eucalyptus and the red one sandalwood? If so I'll definitely try the green one. Sandalwood is a little bit too heavy for my smell-buds. I love the smell of it, but for the morning I'd like something with eukalyptus, lemon, or something along those lines to help me wake up and feel refreshed throughout the day. So I think I'll go for the green one lol.

Ya I've heard Personna and Gillette 7 O'Clock were the best, but it doesn't hurt to try them all since they're so cheap.

Try a lot of blades and pick one you liked best ;)

Just got my Merkur 34C and Proraso soap. Noticeably better than the Van Der Hagen stuff. The soap is slicker, and I noticed that the razor curves the blade a little bit so I guess that could make it so I don't have to hold the razor at as much of an angle.

Well for daily shaving needs/ I usually use a baun electric shaver, but my problem is I've got really coarse facial hair ( Arab genes )  so it takes quite some time to really get a clean look. otherwise I just use a generic straight razor with half-blades from shark. each blade lasts me for 2 shaves max! What I really care about is the quality of the badger & the cream you use ( I use a Porter's Badger thats made in Bozeman, MT ) used to live there so thats always a friendly memento and Proraso cream, the stuff smells good and its works well with my skin. If i'm feeling extra lazy, our friendly neighborhood barbershop has a BYO straight razor policy  :p

Told you. As for myself - I prefer vintage razors, but Mercurs are solid pieces of engineering. And Proraso is not bad either. There are a lot of costlier soaps, but they ain't much better, really. Just more famous/organic/etc.

B&M are totally worth the money. The quality of ingredients and performance prove it. I can't speak highly enough of them.

Their new latha line performs just as well but is formulated so that it is lower priced.

I have to make my own shaving soap to prevent razor bumps. Every anti bump product makes the bumps worse.

Ingredients:
+ Aloe Vera Gel
+ Lemon Juice (closes my pores for a tighter shave)
+ Antibacterial Hand Soap (just a little for the germs/viscosity)
+ Shower Gel (small amount for viscosity)
+ Baking Soda (for freshness)

Kind of weird that this mixture has works for bumps. Maybe one of you knows my pain and can recommend a shave soap?

I can't use anything with oil added and I needs me some aloe vera.

I guess I could upgrade the ingredients in the future but it would be nice to just buy something that works.

Tried a few of their other soaps and just really like that one. I have a super sensitive neck and that soaps seems to do the trick.

For daily use, I now just use a foamy canned shave cream and a Feather AC DX, non-folding.  It's quick and gives a nice clean shave - even with just a single pass.  No stropping with the swap-out blade (I use Captain Excelia blades).  If I decide to use a DE for whatever reason, I use a Slant with a Feather blade.  Nice and close, but not as good as the straight.
I have a bunch of straights - my favorites are a couple of Filarmonicas which I very rarely use anymore.  But they give great shaves.

BIC Flex 3 (made in Greece) are the only razors I can use. Everything else either cuts up my face or gives me bumps.

There's something about those Grecian blades! Just ordered another 100 Bic Astors myself.

I use the gillette venus embrace. Though I don't have facial hair, so I can't verify how it works on that...

Thats interesting because i would suspect a lot of those products contain irritants. What natural shave soaps have you tried? There are plenty of people with allergies to added perfumes and such that are often added. If its actually the soap you're allergic to and not some irritation from the shave itself, Mike's Natural Unscented is the standard for a great soap with nothing added. A couple others that people swear by would be Paraso's White soap, and Mystic Waters Natural. Its something that has countless posts of discussion on places like badger & blade or straightrazorplace. Have you tried creams? They are often a little more gentle and can be perfect for sensitive skin conditions.

I use a ton of aloe vera to counteract the unnatural soaps. I poked around the internet a bit after writing that and found a few alternatives that might work for me. I think once I upgrade to a better brush I wont have as many issues with oil. The oils in most products cause issues for me since I already have a ton of natural oils. Regardless of how much oil I eat I can't wear breathe right strips. They fall off my nose after a minute.

I've tried Paraso's sensitive skin formula, and that worked OK. I'm fine with scents. I can't use aftershave or pre shave oils so aloe vera is essential for me. I didn't realize it was the oils causing the problems until I used an Art Of Shaving kit my gf at the time bought me. Pre shave oil wrecked me.

I'll upgrade my equipment and try some soaps with tons of aloe vera and report back with the results.

I have a bunch of soaps but they're all scented and such. I do however, have some shaving cream that is no longer made that has some formulas for sensitive, oily, or problematic skin types. Shoot me a PM with your address and I'd be happy to mail you some samples.  :thumb:

I don't have to shave much but I was recently given a safety razor. I do not recall the name and there isn't anything on it to identify its brand. It's pretty nice though. Blades are a lot cheaper.
Biking is fun.

The closer it is, the smoother it is for longer. My girlfriend appreciates that fact  ;D
Also with a razer its easier to get a clean edge along the neck/cheek line, and easier to do small areas such as around the mouth when dealing with a beard.

I wanted to love my Norelco. I have a wet dry circular thing, I tried TP.. I really did  :'(

My experience is that I have to make so many passes with an electric razor it grinds the oils into my face in the process. I'm the kind of guy that can use orange pumice on my face and still have some oil left over

Its really not a big deal to me - I'm probably not going to get to it before it goes rancid. I have a huge beard and still have probably 10 years worth of other soaps and creams to get through. Its from Coates, I bought a 6-pack when they were closing up shop.

The stuff I use works. I'm not in a dire situation, but maybe someone from GH can utilize them before they expire

Yup. As you said.

Electric razors also have issues with thick hairs. I got a lot of tugging and pulling after using an electric.

It worked great when I was younger but after a year or two it was painful.

but you're suppose to use a trimmer first to make it shorter, then the regular electric razor.
