Personally, I never got the whole alcohol thing. I get that it is a social activity (hopefully!), but most of it tastes so gross that I just can't bring myself to do it. I have enough vices in this world, I am not going to force myself into liking another one! I do feel remarkably uncomfortable when I go to work functions and everyone is ordering wine and whatnot and I'm like "I'll just have ginger ale". Not because I care about what others think, just because I always feel so unrefined, or maybe like I'm still a kid at the grownups table.

Hey tp I truly do understand how hard the drinking culture of China is. Returning toasts 1 for 1, people saying you cause someone to lose face if you don't drink, etc. Ugh. It's hard dude. And there's no such thing has having "just one beer" there. It's either nothing or getting trashed.

My suggestion:  go see a doctor. Get him to tell you it's better for you not to drink. Then tell your friends that you had to stop drinking - doctor's orders. Say it's 对我的身体不好.  Then don't ever drink another drop, public or private, again. It's pretty much the only way to get off the drunk hamster wheel.

I've thought of installing Skype just to chat with some folks here. I'm just not interesting though. Be that person that 10 minutes in have no idea what I said because you were thinking of an excuse to hang up  )

Preciatez the thought -snowpants-,   but even if I got a doctors note,   it would seem like drinking is a mild sport in China, and you're required to play even injured..

Also it's amazing how terrible setups:
- cousin reunion where you know no one,
- wedding you're not sure why you're here,
- terrible parties

can become decent once you find drinking buddies.

Also if you're kind of socially akward, shy (like I am). Alcohol can fix it.

Studies even showed that a glass of red wine at lunch is good in the long run.

I’m just glad that my job does not require me to entertain client or anything. You must be on sales or some lines that tp4 and if you hated it, i think it’s time to change job man. Can’t imagine drinking as long as your career life and more!

They told me who to hang out with and who to stay away from. Turned out later in life that the preppies did more drugs than the thugs.

And I'll never forget that little plexiglass case they passed around with a pot leaf, joint, etc in it. The **** were they thinking?

Only good thing about DARE is the black, white, and red license plates for black cars.

Make sure you live healthily on the day
I had the same lifestyle when I live in China, but I balanced it with exercise, lots of water and non-greasy food (which is hard to come by in China )
but again, you have to be happy in the first place

I was made manager of a my uncles karaoke bar while he went on vacation for about 2 weeks last month, I told him I was curious after seeing a documentary about bar hostesses, and he said what the hell.  Exactly as you've said. They're trained to drink, and are commissioned per bottle on top of base salary .   What you don't see is 1/3 of them throwing up blood in the restroom.   Also, many are addicted to alcohol, and either smoke a lot to stave off the shakes, or do something like speed.
