If I feel threatened, yes I will fight back.

I am not a small dude. I lift 5 days a week and have mando pt 3 times a week. So for the most part, unless she is a she hulk, I feel like i can de-escalte a situation without violence.

He missed, and I was able to deescalate the situation, but in many cases people aren't so lucky. I strongly believe women should be treated as equals. And if I physically go at someone they have every right to come back at me. But the problem is that the response for many people - primarily men - is to resort to violence even when they aren't being threatened with it themselves. And it is also these men that would use the very argument that you laid out to justify it.

I can talk a big game, but at the end of the day your average adult (and teenage for that matter) male is going to be able to kick my ass if they wanted to. I don't have the strength or speed to stop them. What it really all comes down to is treating each other with decency and respect. I don't think many males want to get attacked either, regardless of it was a female or another male doing the provocation. And just because I don't want a guy attacking me doesn't mean I should be barefoot and pregnant, cooking, cleaning and getting beers for the men in my presence. Not saying you said that, but you know what I mean (hopefully).

To answer TP's question...if she is attacking you, then you are within your rights to try and stop her. But you also must not lose control and go to far. That is the same for any physical altercation, regardless of gender.

The latter half of my post was truly meant to be a matter of principle - in practice I would have a hard time hurting anyone, much less someone significantly smaller/weaker than myself. 

I was definitely not imagining a scenario anything like what you've described (I wouldn't act in that way even if it were a guy), but was simply saying that if I were attacked by a woman I would defend myself as I would regardless of gender of the attacker.  I am not one to pick fights and be on the more aggressive side of things, so your scenario didn't even occur to me, sorry.

This is a good point.  How can we all be treated equally if these double-standards still exist?  We all know that throughout history and even now, girls have been discriminated against by many men, but that doesn't mean that we should flip the standards.  We should overcome them to get equality.  One should refrain from violence regardless of if they're a boy or a girl - not because of gender, but because there's these things called words that can solve problems without the quick-satisfaction of aggression.  Of course there are scenarios where you need to physically defend yourself, where it may be acceptable to use self-defence, but that doesn't mean that one gender somehow deserves to be able to defend themself more than the another.

Rant over.  Continue hitting or not hitting men, women, geese, fresh fruit, etc.
